영아기 자녀를 둔 초보 어머니들의 양육 관심사

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Purpose of this research is to investigate the interest of the mothers with children of babyhood by using the process of surveying. The procedure was executed with 7 mothers of children, divided into two groups, followed by group and individual interviews. The research covers from period of child birth until today, and it aims at further studying the interest of the mothers in health, playing, education, educational support of the babies, including the expectations they develop in the child caring enterprise.

The research undertook the specific method of following:

First, mothers in the first infancy period, seem to be concentrated in creatively providing their child with safe food, and develop the right sleeping habit, as well as some emergency procedures for various potential health problems.
This infancy period is when the children develop their physique and brain activity, therefore mother’s awareness and interest is solely about health above all.
Thus mothers care mostly about eating and sleeping which has direct impact on growth. Mothers include in their agenda, breast feeding, baby food, and nutritional supplements. It is common for the mothers to collect many health data for a better outcome, for the greatest difficulty in child growth lies on the health, seeing any sort of illness on the child is the most unbearable for the mothers, it is especially upsetting to see them bear the pain without the ability to express it. Mothers at this stage are not greatly competent in taking the necessary action, which makes them run to the emergency room even in a slight fever. Further, they concern whether the child can take in the prescribed medication without harm.


Secondly, this stage is when mothers are unaware which education or playing is right for their child. Meetings with other mothers give a chance for information exchange and ones who attend go with expectation to gain anything they might have missed.


For a mother to spend majority of the day with their child, they are in need of a way to play with one another, as well as knowledge on how this should be done properly.
So mothers share their methods online and visit each other and shop for appropriate toys. However this still isn’t enough for mothers to do something with their child the entire day, so they choose to be with mothers for exchange of information and get programs plus books for adequate home schooling. In such programs they are given a chance to be in a community that they can learn and share difficulties of child care.

Mothers with child of infancy period worry that their children will not have sufficient motivation for growth which might result in falling behind others. Especially mothers worry their child might not show linguistic competency at around 18 months which an average time for a healthy child to start showing speaking ability.
As a result, mothers try hard to use numerous books with a wide spectrum of colors as much as possible and these books, being equipped for educational purposes, consists of devices that awaken the five senses.
Moreover great home schooling teachers visit 20minutes a week to supplement the child with additional classes to make up for what which mothers cannot do for the child.
However these teachers and programs are not easy to afford, but people admit that they do not have many other choices.


Thirdly, more than anything, the expected supports from the working husbands are not being well fulfilled, and today’s nuclear family structure does not allow easy access of helping hands as needed. After giving birth, mothers struggle with the multiplied amount of house work and later suffer depression. Husband who do their job as a father after work give their wives a chance to gain help in their child rearing process but mothers with least support are under deeper stress than ever. Today, it is an inevitable fact that mothers have a great amount of things to do without the psychological and physical help from their spouses who are busy doing outside work.

Fourthly mothers going through this stage reflect back on how they were educated in the past with their own parents. With this as the basis, mothers design their ways of child care and discard what was negative and perform what was positive.
In a short space of time, during experiences the rearing of children, mothers investigate about expect of rear of children and what do they will expect for children in future.
On this wise, mothers' rearing experience of childhood and study of rearing from around become a background of mothers rearing perspective.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 영아기 자녀를 둔 어머니들의 양육 관심사에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구를 위하여 연구자는 7명의 어머니를 두 집단으로 나누어 주로 집단 면담과 개인적 심층 면담을하였다. 본 연구의 구성은 자녀의 출산에서부터 지금까지 양육과정을 거치면서 양육의 관심사 즉 건강,놀이&교육,양육지원,양육의 기대에 대한 어머니들의 생각을 정리하여 그 의미를 살펴보고자 한다.

본 연구의 결과를 세부적으로 정리하면 다음과 같다.

첫째, 영아기 자녀를 가진 초보 어머니들은 자녀를 건강하게 키우기 위해서 안전한 다양한 먹거리를 제공하고, 바른 수면 습관을 위한 노력과 아픈 아가를 위한 대처방법에 많은 관심을 가지고 있다.
영아기는 신체발달과 뇌 발달이 왕성하게 이루어지는 시기이기 때문에 이 시기의 어머니들의 건강에 대한 관심은 그 어떤 것보다도 많다고 하겠다.
따라서 어머니들은 아이의 성장과 직결되는 먹거리와 수면에 가장 신경을 많이 쓰게 된다. 그 먹거리에는 모유수유, 이유식, 영양제등이 포함된다. 어머니들은 여러정보들을 통해서 자신의 자녀가 건강하게 클 수 있도록 노력한다. 그리고 무엇보다 양육의 어려움은 아이들이 아픈데서 온다. 말도 못하는 영아기 자녀가 아픈 것만큼 어머니들 마음이 안타까운 것은 아마 없을 것이다. 영아기 자녀를 둔 어머니들은 아직 대처능력이 미숙하여 단순히 열이 나는 것이라도 무조건 응급실로 달려가게 된다. 또한 병원에서 처방해 주는 약이 아이에게 괜찮은지에 대한 염려도 된다.

둘째, 영아기 자녀를 가진 초보 어머니들은 아이의 발달에 대한 이해가 부족하여서 놀잇감 선정과 놀이 방법, 적절한 교육 수행에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 따라서 어머니들 모임에서 많은 정보를 얻기를 기대하며 많은 대화를 나누었다.
아이와 하루 종일 단둘이 있는 시간이 대부분인 어머니들에게 있어서 그 시간을 아이도 즐겁고 자신도 즐겁게 보내기 위해서는 우선 놀이 법을 알아야 하고 그에 맞는 적절한 놀잇감도 있다면 더 없이 좋을 것이다. 그래서 어머니들은 서로 놀이에 대한 정보를 공유하고 서로의 집을 방문하고 인터넷 싸이트를 찾아보며 적절한 놀잇감을 산다. 그렇지만 단순히 놀이 법을 알고 놀잇감을 사는 것만으로는 아이와 하루종일 단 둘이 시간을 보내기는 일은 쉽지 않다. 그래서 어머니들이 선택하게 되는 것은 또래 아이를 가진 어머니들과 소통할 수 있는 문화센터와 책을 통한 홈 스쿨링이다. 어머니들은 문화센터를 통해서 아이들과 놀이하는 놀이 법을 알게 되고, 어머니들끼리 모임도 생겨서 서로 육아에 대한 정보를 나누고 어려움을 공유하며 위로한다.
영아기 자녀를 가진 어머니들은 자신의 아이만 적합한 자극의 부족으로 다른 아이에 비해서 뒷 쳐질까봐 걱정이다. 특히 18개월부터 눈에 띄게 언어발달이 이루어지는데 이 때 자신의 아이만 말을 못하고 표현을 못하게 될까봐 걱정한다. 그래서 책을 통해서 자극을 시켜줄려고 가능한 많은 책을 보유하고 싶어 한다. 요즘에 그 책이라는 것은 단순한 책이 아니라 여러 가지 오감자극을 할 수 있는 다양한 교재교구도 포함하기 때문에 어머니들은 단순한 장난감보다는 전집을 통해서 교재교구도 구입해서 다양하게 활용하고자한다. 더욱이 책을 통한 가정방문 선생님도 일주일에 한번 20분씩 수업을 해주니 어머니들에게는 자신이 못해주는 것을 대신해 주는 선생님이 더할나위 없이 반가울 따름이다. 그런데 아무래도 전집을 사거나 홈스쿨링 선생님을 신청하는 것은 경제적 부담이 크다. 그럼에도 어머니들은 영아기 놀이와 교육부터 사교육을 할 수 밖에 없는 현실이라는 것에 모두 동의한다.

셋째, 영아기 자녀를 가진 초보 어머니들은 다른 지원보다도 남편들에게서 양육에 대한 지원을 많이 받고 싶어하지만, 남편들이 기대만큼 지원을 해 주는 경우는 드물었다.
요즘에는 핵가족화 되면서 다른 가족에게도 도움을 받는 것이 쉽지가 않다. 따라서 어머니들은 출산 후 대부분 배로 늘어난 가사일과 양육으로 산후 우울증을 겪는다고 한다. 다행히 남편이 저녁에라도 아버지의 역할을 잘 감당한다는 어머니는 양육에 대한 힘을 많이 얻게 된다고 하였다. 반면에 그렇지 못한 남편을 보는 어머니들은 양육의 스트레스만 한층 쌓인다고 했다.
이와 같이 어머니들은 양육의 고충은 많지만 바쁜 사회생활로 남편에게 조차 그것에 적합한 심리적 육체적 지원을 받고 있지 못하는 실정인 것이다.

넷째, 영아기 자녀를 가진 어머니들의 양육관의 형성 배경에는 어린 시절 어머니들의 부모님에 의한 양육경험이 큰 영향을 미치고 있었다. 이를 통해 내가 생각하는 좋은 부모의 모습을 구상해보고 현재 실천하고자 노력하는 적용 점을 알아보았다. 그리고 나쁜 양육의 예를 통해 자신의 양육을 반성해 보기도 했다.
짧은 시간이지만 양육을 경험하면서 아이에 대한 양육기대를 어떻게 했는지 알아보고 앞으로는 어떤 기대를 할 것인지 알아보았다.
이와 같이 영아기 자녀를 가진 어머니들의 어린 시절 양육경험과, 주변의 양육 엿보기는 어머니들의 양육관의 형성 배경이 된다.
