강진의 학풍과 향리, 그리고 다산

국문 초록 (Abstract)

다산 정약용은 강진 유배 시절 두 그룹의 제자를 두었다. 하나는 유배 초기의 그룹으로, 읍내에 거주할 때의 제자이다. 그들은 대부분 강진 향리 자제들이다. 당시 향리 자제들은 관내 양반과 교유할 수 없었기에 유배인에게 가서 수학했다. 이런 상황에서 강진 향리 자제들은 유배인 정약용에게 가서 학업을 열심히 연마했고 갖가지 정보를 제공하는 등 스승을 정성으로 모셨다. 또 하나는 유배 후기의 그룹으로, 다산 초당에 거주할 때의 제자이다. 그들은 대부분 강진 양반 자제들이다. 당시 강진 양반들은 전통적인 성리학 외에 천문학, 수학, 수차 등 새로운 학문도 연구하고 있었다. 이런 상황에서 강진에 유배 온 정약용은 제자들과의 협업을 통해 실학을 연구해 나갔다. 이처럼 당시 강진의 학풍은 정약용이 실학을 집대성하는 데에 학문적 자양분으로 적지 않게 작용했을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Dasan Jeong Yak-yong had two groups of pupils during his exile in Gangjin. One was from the early days of his exile and consisted of his pupils that he taught while living in the town. Most of them were children of Hyangris in Gangjin. Since they were not allowed to have exchanges with noblemen in the community those days, they had to learn from noblemen in exile. In this situation, they studied hard under Jong in exile and served him with care by providing him with all kinds of information. The other group consisted of his pupils when he lived in his Chodang in the latter part of his exile. Most of them were children of noblemen in Gangjin. Those days, noblemen of Gangjin did research on new areas of study including astronomy, math and waterwheels in addition to traditional Neo-Confucianism. In this situation, Jeong did research on practical studies in collaboration with his pupils in his exile in Gangjin. The academic tradition of Gangjin those days must have made huge contributions as a cademic nutriments to his integration of practical studies.
