The Purpose of this study is to investigate syntactic restriction in final endings of colloquial language, while taking syntactic characteristics and morphological characteristics into account. In Korean language, the modality has been defined withing the era of meaning. However, this paper deems the mood as sentential type relevant to certain illocutionary force, while taking the modality as narrator’s attitude on proposition, which is independent category from the mood. According to this definition, ‘-eul-geol’ comes in the semantic category: [speculation] and [regret]. However, it has differnet syntactic restrictions by the semantic category, which is outstanding characteristic. Such phenomenon could be explained as scope of modality.
As reported by Palmer(2001), [speculation] refers to epistemic modality, while [regret] stands for event modality. epistemic modality means narrator’s attitude on proposition and is to recognized whether it could possibly happen, especially with regard to factuality of the propostion or if it must be true or reasonable proposition in the sentence. On the other hand, the event modality is element for making event within the propostion.
The phenomenon-a single word form have diverse meanings-is cross linguistic phenomenon. Diversity could be derived from grammaticalization, and another characteristics of ‘-eul-geol’ is that all of them are formed through ‘grammaticalization’.
