      South Korea has grown in various aspects, including increased transportation volume and regional development;significant changes brought by high-speed railways to the lives of the Korean population have been widely recognized. Japan and China, countries adjacent to South Korea, are also operating high-speed railways, which have brought significant changes to people’s lives as well. In this paper, the status of Korea’s high-speed railway will be examined by comparing it to those of Northeast Asian countries, which are well known for population density and concentrated economic zones. The high-speed railways of the Northeast Asian countries were constructed to expand new routes, improve the speed of existing lines, and connect marginalized areas of countries by increasing capacity of existing lines. The Gyeongbu high-speed railway in Korea was constructed to increase the capacity of existing lines, and the Honam high-speed railway was built for regional development and balanced national development. Similarly, in the cases of Japan and China, construction of new lines was aimed at enhancing economic growth and balancing development of the country by connecting marginalized regions. In this paper, the status of Korean high-speed railways will be examined by comparing various factors of South Korea, Japan (which opened the world’s first high-speed railway), and China, which has the longest high-speed railway in the world.
