The picaresque novel started in Spain in 1554 with Lazarillo de Tormes and the genre was established with Mateo Aleman`s Guzman de Alfarache in 1599. This style of novel originated in 16th century Spain and flourished throughout 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, and it continues to influence modern literature. The representative works of 20th century picaresque novels are La lucha por la vida of Pio Baroja, El Chiplichandle of Juan Antonio Zunzunegui and Retablo de picardias of Manuel Barrios. The protagonist of the picaresque novel is called picaro, an alienated outsider and who, in first-person, states that the motivation for his writing is to communicate his experiences of overcoming deception, hypocrisy, and falsehood of the society. So most picaresque novels incorporate several defining characteristics such as satire, comedy, sarcasm, acerbic social criticism, and can be consequently defined as social novels. As in early picaresque novels, 20th century spanish picaresque novels narrate the life of a picaro in order to explain a particular situation. But in many cases the situation resulted from political ideas, and the novels strived to put forward a political critique of 20th century Spain. In this study we can find the value of these works as political novels.
