위험을 감행하는 여성 : 데이팅 앱 '틴더' 사용자의 성적 경험을 중심으로
This thesis is an ethnography on the experiences and sexual performativity of women in their 20s and 30s who use the social dating application “Tinder” for casual sex in the long term. In Korean society, sexual relationships with strangers unintended for romantic dating are not entirely new; however, it is noteworthy that dating apps are lowering the entry barriers to casual relationships based on non-face-to-face anonymity and high accessibility. The sexuality of these women, who, despite being aware of gendered sexual risk, meet a lot of strange men in pursuit of one’s pleasure is difficult to position in the existing mainstream sexual discourse. Their behavior of going ahead with casual sex using Tinder cannot be fully understood without analyzing their pleasures and social conditions. Based on in-depth user interviews and digital participatory observation conducted for three months, from March 2021, this thesis focuses on the impact of casual sex encounters and experiences on women's lives and the socio-cultural value of pleasure in terms of “adventure.” In Korean society, women have had insufficient opportunities to explore their sexual desires. The norms of traditional romantic relationships and strong sexual stigma against women have been oppressing various sexual practices, and the male-dominated sexual system have made structural gendered risks the responsibility for individual women to avoid. In this regard, Tinder appears as a medium through which women could strategically bypass these mores. Accordingly, women maintain their anonymity while selecting the information to provide and eliminate those who seem dangerous among the numerous non-face-to-face options. Using these features, they try to reduce anxiety about negative possibilities and plan to create situations for sexual encounters. Through attempts to explore their sexual desires and go through challenging new situations, women reconstruct self-knowledge of sexuality. By exploring their desires and pleasures, and encouraging the will to knowledge on sexuality, they see through inequality in sexual practices, and the problem of sexual oppression centered on “ownership” in relationships. At the same time, while actively taking risks, women give shape to abstract risks and interpret the effects of risks on their sexual performativity and daily lives through experiences and senses. They distinguish between manageable risks and uncontrollable dangers. Distinguishing between risks improves the internal power to resist unjust demands by men, confirming that they are not completely incompetent and creating strategic ways to have safer sex. However, risks do not always come from others and structures. The risk of strangeness is due to the unknowability of desires. There are no subjects who know one's desires, pleasures, senses, and feelings a priori. Rather than leaving the unknown state of their bodies as they are, these women try to actively get to know partners through various trials. The sense of being able to manage risk and anxiety and the willingness to self-knowledge are driving forces for their sexual encounters with multiple men in various situations with openness. This thesis attempted to highlight the agency of women who want to realize their desires in the face of gendered risks. Through this, I would like to contribute to the discussion of sexuality on women's sexual autonomy. It is difficult to elucidate the energy of life that women's sexual pleasures, senses, and challenges give in the discourse of sex as “violence.” They, who take adventures and create self-discipline, reveal problems inherent in the confrontational composition of risk and safety concepts and resist hierarchical gender scripts of active men as risk-taking sexual subjects and of passive women who avoid risks and respond to men's attempts. This thesis argues, on an empirical level, that by acknowledging sexual desire and pursuing pleasure, women can specifically expand their sense of autonomy and create a self-understanding of sexuality. 본 연구는 소셜 데이팅 앱 ‘틴더’를 활용해 장기적으로 캐주얼 섹스를 하는 20, 30대 여성들의 경험과 성적 수행성에 관한 문화기술지이다. 한국 사회에서 낯선 이와의 연애를 목적하지 않는 성관계가 전적으로 새로운 일은 아니지만, 데이팅 앱이 비대면에 기반한 익명성과 높은 접근 가능성을 바탕으로 캐주얼 섹스의 진입장벽을 낮추고 있음은 주목할만 하다. 젠더화된 성적 위험을 알고 있음에도 쾌락을 좇아 낯선 남성을 만나는 이들의 섹슈얼리티는 기존의 주류적 성 담론에 매끈하게 안착하기 어렵다. 틴더를 사용해 캐주얼 섹스를 감행하는 여성들의 실천은 이들의 쾌락과 사회적 조건에 대한 분석 없이는 충분히 이해될 수 없다. 2021년 3월부터 3개월간 진행한 사용자 심층 면접과 디지털 참여관찰을 토대로 본 연구는 데이팅 앱으로 이루어지는 캐주얼 섹스의 시도와 경험이 여성의 삶에 미치는 영향과 성적 쾌락의 사회적 가치를 탐험과 모험의 측면에서 주목하고자 한다. 한국 사회에서 여성들은 자신의 성적 욕망을 탐색해볼 기회를 충분히 얻지 못해왔다. 공고한 낭만적 연애의 규범과 성적 타락에 대한 낙인은 다양한 성적 실천을 억압하고, 남성 중심적 성적 질서는 젠더 위계에 따라 구조화된 위험을 여성 개인의 책임으로 만들었다. 여기에서 틴더는 이 질서들을 우회할 수 있는 매개체로 등장한다. 여성들은 상대에게 제공할 정보를 선별하면서 자신의 익명성을 어느 정도 유지하고, 수많은 선택지 중에서 위험해 보이는 사람을 비대면으로 소거한다. 이를 통해 여성들은 위험에 대한 불안을 줄이고 성적 실천의 상황을 계획적으로 조성하고자 한다. 자신의 성적 욕망을 적극적으로 탐색하고자 하는 시도와 새로운 상황에 대한 도전을 통해 여성들은 섹슈얼리티에 대한 자기 지식을 재구성한다. 자신의 욕망과 쾌락을 파악하고 성에 대한 지식을 앎의 의지를 고양해가면서, 이들은 소유적 관계를 중심으로 한 성적 실천의 불평등과 젠더화된 성적 억압의 문제를 간파한다. 동시에, 위험을 적극적으로 감행하면서 이 여성들은 추상적인 위험을 구체화하고 위험들이 자신의 성적 실천과 삶에 미치는 영향을 경험과 감각을 통해 해석해낸다. 이들은 관리할 수 있는 위험과 관리할 수 없는 위험을 분별해낸다. 위험 구분하기는 자신이 완전히 무능력한 존재가 아님을 확인하고, 더 안전한 성관계를 할 수 있는 전략적 방법을 만들면서 남성의 부당한 요구에 저항할 수 있는 내적 힘을 향상한다. 그러나 위험이 항상 타자와 구조로부터만 오는 것은 아니다. 미지로 인한 위험은 욕망의 불가지성에 기인한다. 이때 여성들은 자기 몸에 대한 미지의 상태를 그대로 내버려두기보다는 다양한 실천을 통해 적극적으로 알아가고자 한다. 자신의 욕망, 쾌락, 감각, 느낌을 선험적으로 알고 있는 주체는 없기 때문이다. 그러므로 위험과 불안을 관리할 수 있다는 감각과 자신에 대해 알고자 하는 의지는 이 여성들이 개방성을 가지고 다양한 상황에서 여러 사람과 성적 만남을 하는 원동력이다. 본 논문은 젠더화된 위험 속에서 자기 욕망을 구현해내고자 하는 여성들의 행위자성을 부각하고 이를 통해 여성의 성적 자율성에 대한 섹슈얼리티 논의에 기여하고자 한다. 여성의 성적 쾌락과 도전이 주는 삶의 에너지는 폭력으로서만 성을 주목할 때 드러나기 어렵다. 모험을 감행하며 자기 규율을 만들어보는 이 여성들은 위험과 안전 개념의 대립적 구도에 내재된 문제를 드러내고, 위험을 감수하는 능동적 성적 주체로서 남성과 위험을 회피하고 남성의 시도에 반응하는 수동적 여성이라는 위계적 젠더 각본에 저항한다. 본 연구는 실증적 차원에서 성적 욕망을 인정하고 쾌락을 추구함으로써 여성들이 자율의 감각을 구체적으로 확장하고 성에 대한 자기이해를 만들어나갈 수 있다는 것을 주장한다.
