Yifangleiju is a collection of medical books that consists of 266 volumes. It is a very important set of data in studying ancient Asian medicine because it systematically organized the many medicine-related data of Eastern Asia. But it was never published again after its 30th volume was published in 1477, and only a single copy remains in Japan today. Because this book is valuable it has been republished in China based on the copy in Japan. This study is a study of the many problems that occurred in the process of republishing Yifangleiju in China.
흑효모유래 $\beta$-glucan의 패혈증 치료효과 및 항돌연변이 활성 평가

Anti-mutagenic and anti-septic effects of $\beta$-1,3/1,6-glucan from Aureobasidium pullulans SM-2001 were evaluated on the on the cyclophosphamide (CPA)-cecal ligation puncture (CLP) and CPA-treated mice. To induce immunosuppression and mutagenicity, 150 and 110 mg/kg of CPA were single intraperitoneally injected at 3 or 1 day before CLP or initial $\beta$-glucan administration. In CLP animals, the cecum was mobilized and ligated below the ileocecal valve, punctured through both surfaces twice with a 22-gauge needle. 125 mg/kg of $\beta$-glucan were dissolved in saline and subcutaneously or orally administered in a volume of 10 ml/kg (of body weight), 4 times, 12 hrs intervals from 6 hrs after CLP or 1 day after second dose of CPA. After treatment of $\beta$-glucan, the mortalities were observed in CPA-CLP model, and the appearance of a micronucleus is used as an index for genotoxic potential in CPA model. As results of CPA-CLP sepsis, all animals (9/9, 100%) in CPA-CLP control were dead within 2 days after CLP. In addition, increase of the number of bone marrow MNPCEs indicated mutagenicity were also observed by treatment of CPA. However, $\beta$-glucan treatment effectively inhibited the mortalities in CPA-CLP, and it also reduced the CPA treatment-related mutagenicity, respectively. These results indicated that $\beta$-glucan has effective anti-septic and anti-mutagenic effects and can be used as an agents for treating sepsis and mutagenicity related to high-dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, further studies should be conducted to observe more detail action mechanisms of it's anti-septic and anti-mutagenic effects.

An imbalance in bone remodeling that is caused by increased bone resorption over bone formation leads to most adult skeletal diseases including osteoporosis. Since the development of anti-resorptive agents from natural substances has recently gained more interest in the treatment of osteoporosis, we evaluated the effects of 222 natural compounds on receptor activator of $NF-{\kappa}B$ ligand (RANKL)-induced of tartrate-resistance acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity in RAW264.7 murine macrophage cell, and found that berberine chloride is one of compounds inhibiting RANKL-induced TRAP activity. Berberine chloride significantly inhibited the RANKL-induced TRAP activity and the formation of multinucleated osteoclasts in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, berberine chloride prevented the RANKL-induced mRNA expression of TRAP, matrix metalloproteinase 9 and c-Src, which have been known to be highly expressed in the process of osteoclastogenesis. Interestingly, berberine chloride prevented the RANKL-induced activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) which is one of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases. In conclusion, berberine chloride could inhibit the osteoclastogenesis via preventing the activation of ERK/MAP kinase signaling pathway.

Emodin is one of the main active components of a traditional Korean medicine isolated from the root and rhizomes of Rheum palmatum L. In this study, of 222 natural compounds to evaluate the anabolic activities, emodin activated bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 promoter in the differentiation process of mouse osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. Emodin was shown to significantly stimulate the activity and expression of alkaline phosphatase, an earlyphase marker of osteoblastic differentiation, on the differentiation day 7, and induce the osteopontin mRNA expression from the differentiation day 14. In addition, low concentration (up to 5 M) of emodin dramatically promoted the induction of mineralization in MC3T3-E1 subclone 4 cells. The stimulatory effect of emodin on the osteoblast differentiation/mineralization could be associated with its potential to stimulate the BMP-2 gene expression. Although further studies are needed to determine the precise mechanism, this study suggests that the use of herbal medicine containing natural compounds with anabolic activity such as emodin could have a beneficial effect on bone health.
