        Experiencing the Art/Craft/Handmade/Studio Furniture Aesthetics in Postmodernism Theoretically (III) -Creating a piece of wood furniture by transforming the Postmodern furniture aesthetics through the interpretation of metaphor-

        Through this study, I explored a creation of the postmodern furniture aesthetics through the transformation by student's interpretation in experiencing the art/craft/handmade/studio furniture aesthetics in postmodernism theoretically for 'wood culture experience class' or 'wood love experience class' by the Korea Forest Service because the class tends to focus on making simple wood works involved just in the practical part. Qualitative conceptual analysis as the principal methodology was used to achieve the theoretical context in the experience programs. Following the lesson one on defining the postmodern aesthetics in New Design furniture as metaphor and the lesson two on interpreting an aesthetics of art and everyday life with the wood furniture which expresses the metaphorical and symbolical aesthetics appeared as New Design furniture in postmodernism in the previous papers, I developed lesson three on creating an object using eco-friendly materials like wood in transforming an aesthetics of postmodern furniture as the final stage of the study. Therefore, the students will be able to create a piece of eco-friendly wood furniture for our environment as metaphor transformed by his/her perspective regarding a piece of selected New Design furniture.

        A Study on Furniture Design for Disassembly

        Modernity which is superficial phenomenon set off the mass scale for mass consumption and provide uniformly artificial environment. But natural destruction, environment pollution, resources exhaustion and so on has been caused by this and now ecology is threatened by destruction and damage beyond the limitation and human beings survival is even threatened. Accordingly furniture development for environment preservation considered environment problem is the urgent real situation. Recent paradigm is the concept of Eco-design which is the green design possible to live together in symbiosis, and new types of alternative furniture are needed in Korea as well. 'Furniture for disassembly' is presented as new method for alternative furniture. Furniture for disassembly can be presented by mainly two directions. The first main characteristic is what is assembled by the use of woodworking joints technique as an assembly structure system without any hardware. The second is what is presented as the structure possible to be assembled by simple manual tools with hardware without any glue. The advantages of furniture for disassembly are environment preservation, space application, transportation efficiency and shapeliness. In manufacture method which is different from present furniture, the application of traditional truss technique which uses various types of custom-made and connection technique in case of assemble structure system without hardware is the typical differences. This assembly method expects not only interest induction about assembly and disassembly of diagram per sub materials but also the development of emotion, the improvement of collaboration, space perception ability and shape sense, the improvement of solid body structure insight and so on, when it use in the furniture for children with the application to many kinds of structure with BANGDOOSANJ (Wedged), JUMUGJANGBU (Dovetail) or NABIEUNJANG (Dovetail Keys) and so on.

        The Literature Review for Postmodern Furniture Aesthetics of communication called New Design Furniture

        This study explored the literature review for intending to make contemporary furniture expressed as postmodern aesthetics accessible to the broadest possible public, particularly through an examination and realization of art and everyday life, using qualitative analysis about the related literature as the principal methodology. The postmodern furniture aesthetics of communication expressed through double-coding, which was seen by Charles Jencks as the defining element of Post-Modernism, is characterized by the use of ideas from the traditions of craft. Hence, I dealt with pre-Modern furniture and Modern-furniture aesthetics as the background of postmodern furniture called New design furniture. As a result, contemporary furniture called New design furniture represented the use of ornament, craftsmanship, or beauty from the traditions of craft, which was a main source for communication value in postmodern furniture aesthetics.

        The Study on Estimation of Assembly Efficiency via Diversifying Joinery Techniques for Wooden Furniture - Focused on the Studio Classes of Furniture Design Department of Two Universities in Korea -

        The joinery technique, as one of manufacturing techniques for the wooden furniture, influences the production process, the economic efficiency, and the diversification of design. Especially, the usage of machine tools can determine how much the students can enhance their design expression capabilities during the practice class in furniture design courses of domestic universities, in accordance with whether to utilize the machine tools or not, and how much and frequent to use the machine tools. The study proved that the joinery techniques, based on the high-tech machine, has more efficiencies in the various aspects, including the easiness to manufacture the products, and the diversity of design than the joinery technique, based on the handcraft-only. As the ground of this, this study estimated the time to produce the wooden furniture by machine tools and by handcraft-only, each. Also, this study show the comparison of the features of three different joinery techniques. On the basis of this comparison, this study made the conclusion that the machine-based joinery technique, which is used in the practice class, is the best method to bring the best results in manufacturing the wooden furniture.

        A Study on the Direction of Smart Furniture by Changes in Ubiquitous Technology-Based Residential Environment

        This study is intended to forecast changes in Ubiquitous technology-based residential environment since the digital revolution so as to suggest the direction of furniture design in the near future. Among Ubiquitous technologies, the intelligent digital technology applied to a residential environment is defined as "Smart Digital Technology." Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy named the residential environment where such technology is applied "Smart Home." Smart Home is strategically creating intelligent residential environment where interactivity is made between human, furniture and residential environment, based on home automation, home network and intelligent sensor technology. Smart furniture is based on strategic characteristics of smart home. Its convergence with IT equipments is being made. Largely, smart furniture has three characteristics as below: First, smart furniture provides users with information on home management, health management, education and fashion. not just functioning as storage space. Second, smart furniture that is a new lifestyle pattern will suggest a new aesthetic standard based on unsettled shapes and innovative structure. Finally, it gives convenience to users intelligently. Namely, smart furniture, "intelligent informative furniture", will be suggested as a new paradigm.

        A Study on the Technique and Process of Bending Wood

        가구를 디자인하는데 있어서 재료는 매우 중요한 요소이다. 목재는 가구 재료 가운데 가장 많은 부분을 차지하고 있다. 목재는 자연 재료로 부드럽고 환경 친화적인 반면에 수축과 팽창 같은 변화가 심해 목재가 지닌 특성을 고려하지 않으면 올바른 디자인을 할 수가 없다. 목재를 다루는 기술 가운데 휨 가공법은 가구의 다양한 형태를 만들어내는데 매우 유용한 기술 가운데 하나이며, 오래 전부터 가구제작에 사용되어 오면서 증기, 암모니아, 고주파 등 가공방법에 관한 기술적 발전을 가져왔다. 목재는 점탄성 물질로 약간의 가소성을 가지고 있어 힘을 가하면 아름다운 곡선을 만들 수 있는 재료적 특성을 가지고 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 지금까지 가구제작에 사용되어 온 휨 가공법의 종류와 그 특성들을 조사하여 대량생산 또는 소량생산에 적합한 방법들을 체계적으로 분류하여 가구의 형태와 생산방식에 따라 어떠한 가공법을 사용하여야 되는지를 연구하고자 한다. 이번 연구를 통해서 휨 가공방법의 장점은 가구디자인에서 디자이너의 다양한 아이디어를 표현할 수 있는 기술적 방법의 한 가지라 할 수 있다. 분석결과 증자처리 휨 가공은 다품종 소량생산에 적합하고, 암모니아 휨 가공은 스프링 백 현상이 없으며 다양한 자유곡선의 형태 가공에 적합한 방법이라 할 수 있다. 대량생산에서는 고주파 가공이 많이 사용되며, 거단 휨 가공은 작업방법이 용이했고, 적층 휨 가공은 가장 일반적인 가공법으로 소량 또는 대량생산에 모두 적합한 가공법이라 할 수 있다. 또한 이 연구를 통해 많은 가구 디자이너와 제작자들이 목재의 휨 가공에 도움을 주는데 목적이 있다. Materials are such an important factor in designing furniture. Wood is the biggest part of furniture materials. While wood is soft, eco-friendly and natural material, it is variable because it is characterized by severe expansion and contraction. Thus, if the changeable characteristic of wood is not considered in furniture design, the good design of furniture cannot be produced. As one of the skills dealing with woods, bending is such a useful way for making various forms of furniture. While it has been used in furniture-making for a long time, wood processing techniques like steaming bending, bending with ammonia and high frequency bending has been advanced. As wood is a viscoelastic material and has some plasticity, beautiful curves can be created when force is applied. Therefore this paper studies the types of bending methods for furniture and each characteristic of them. Furthermore, this study classifies wood process according to suitability for mass production or small-scale production and researches the proper wood process by the forms and the way of furniture production. Also this study aims to help furniture designers and cabinet makers with wood bending.

        The politic plan research for furniture industrial activation in the northern part of Gyeonggi-Province

        본격적인 지방화시대를 맞이하여 현재 경기북부 가구산업은 지역의 몇몇 가구산업단지 를 중심으로 영세적으로 이루어지고 있으나, 보다 경쟁력 있는 산업으로 육성하기 위하여 이를 가구산업의 전체적인 관점에서 조명하여야 한다. 이러한 차원에서 경기도에서 경기북부지역에 폭넓게 기반을 두고 있는 가구산업을 방관하기보다는 먼저 구조적 측면이나 제도적인 측면에서 경기북부지역을 중심으로 한 가구산업 현황을 분석한 결과를 통하여 경기북부에 연계된 다양한 산업과의 클러스터 화를 추진하며 적극적인 지원, 체계적인 정책마련 등을 통하여 문제를 해결하며 국제적으로 경쟁력 있는 산업으로서 총체적으로 개발육성 방안이 필요하다고 판단된다. 따라서 본 연구는 경기북부 지역에 각 가구업체의 네트워크를 총괄할 수 있는 전담 기구로서 가구산업센타와 세계화에 맞추어 국제적으로 경쟁할 수 있는 첨단가구산업단지 신설 그리고 기술적 차원에서 협업을 이룰 수 있는 가구관련 공동브랜드사업을 제시하였다. 또한 이러한 제시들이 활성화되기 위하여 경기도는 물론이거니와 산업의 주체라 할 수 있는 가구업체와 지역 대학의 관련학과 전문가들의 네트워크가 절실하게 필요하다. In line with the government's policies for localization, furniture industry in the northern area in Gyeoggi-province at presence has been operated by several furniture industrial complexes in the region in small scale, but now it should be considered from overall view of furniture industry in order to develop more competitive industry. As a matter of this fact, Gyeonggi-province should be engaged in planning to make various industrial clusters of the furniture-related industry based on the northern area of province at structural as well as politic aspects, with the help of the analyzed status of the current furniture industry in region, in supporting them by the systemized policies and developing the overall program to foster furniture as an international-competitive industry. Therefore this study suggested 'furniture industry center' which will exclusively handle and maintain the network of each furniture company in the northern area of Gyeonggi-province and 'high-tech furniture industry complex' to keep pace with the globalization and to be competitive internationally and also 'common brand business' for the cooperation at technical phase. In order to realize and vitalize such suggestions, it is urgently necessary that the network consists of the furniture companies and the expert of the related department in local universities as the main body for furniture industry, of course Gyeonggi-province as well.

        Experiencing the Art/Craft/Handmade/Studio Furniture Aesthetics in Postmodernism Theoretically(II) -Interpreting the Postmodern Furniture Aesthetics in terms of Symbol and Metaphor-

        This study explored interpretation of the symbolical and metaphorical aesthetics in experiencing art/craft/handmade/studio furniture theoretically for 'wood culture experience class' or 'wood love experience class' by the Korea Forest Service because the class tends to focus on making simple wood works involved just in the practical part. Qualitative conceptual analysis as the principal methodology was used to achieve the theoretical context in the experience programs. After the lesson one on defining the postmodern aesthetics in New Design furniture as metaphor in the previous paper, I developed lesson two for an aesthetics of art and everyday life with wood furniture which expresses the metaphorical and symbolical aesthetics appeared as New Design furniture in postmodernism. As statement of objective in the second lesson, I explored that students in elementary schools personally transform and interpret the postmodern aesthetics of New Design furniture metaphorically with the meanings of symbol. As a result, the students will be able to write about the aesthetics of New Design furniture as metaphor in interpretation transformed by his/her perspective of a piece of selected New Design furniture.

        Color Evaluation of Commercial Domestic Hardwoods (I)

        Examined the color of ten species of Korean broadleaf trees were experimented based on $L^*a^*b^*$ values and color difference (${\Delta}E^*ab$) between sapwood and heartwood, in order to analyze and determine the color, a critical visual and decorative factor of the broadleaf trees that can be used for making woodcraft and furniture. According to the result, the entire sapwood and heartwood, except the heartwood of Populus tomentiglandulosa, showed positive value in whiteness, redness, and yellowness and therefore contained yellow and red. None of the species showed color difference between sapwood and heartwood that was trace (0~0.5), slight (0.6~1.5), or very much; whereas Populus maximowiczii showed noticeable color difference (1.5~3.0); Salix koreensis, Betula platyphylla var japonica, Carpinus laxiflora, and Castanea crenata, appreciable and Populus tomentiglandulosa, Juglans mandshurica, Betula schmidtii, Alnus japonica, and Quercus variabilis, much. The color characteristics of heartwood and sapwood of the ten Korean broadleaf tree species studied in this research can be used as basic data for woodcraft or furniture production, especially when replacing foreign woods with Korean ones, and also contribute to convergence researches for science, engineering, and design fields.

        Patented Modern Gothic Chair in the Brooklyn Museum of Art by Fredrick W. Krause

        Fredrick Krause's chair in the Brooklyn Museum of Art (accession no. 87. 19) is a key to the understanding of factory-made, patent furniture, and the Modern Gothic style in the United States. However, research has rarely done for this chair as well as for the designer. Since this piece is incorporating the utility patent, it is a valuable example to understand the nineteenth-century patented furniture. Because of the popularity of Modern Gothic style, the similar style of chairs were often manufactured. This study explores how other examples are related and what the significance of the Brooklyn Museum chair is. The book of Sharon Darling provided especially helpful information about other Krause chairs in Fond du Lac and chair manufactures in Chicago. The interview with John Ebert at Galloway House in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin was especially helpful. Several primary sources proved helpful in researching the chair. The photo archives. of Kimbel and Cabus at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum provides me a key to this research.
