It has been well documented that global suppression of the immune responses occurs after thermal injury and these changes resulted in decreased resistance to infection, which is a leading cause of high mortality of burn patients. Regarding to numerical changes of lymphocytes related to this immune defects, a lot of controversial results have been reported. In this study, the distribution of leukocytes was investigated in thermally injured mice. Mice (Balb/c) were anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of 2,2,2-tribromoethanol and thermally injured by immersion of hair-removed dorsal skin (15% total body surface) in a boiling water bath (ca. 96℃). Mortality of mice injured for 7, 9 and 11 seconds was <5%, 25 and 100%, respectively. Almost all of mice injured for 7 seconds recovered from wounds after 40 days postinjury, which were used for all experiments. Significant decrease of peripheral blood leukocyte (PBL), lymph node cell (I,NC) and spleen cell (SPC), thymocyte(Thy) numbers was observed at day 2 and followed by gradual increase to (PBL) or over normal level (LNC and SPC) until day 24 of injury, whereas thymocytes sustained lowered numbers. Such increase of cell number coincided with higher proportion of PMN, particularly in spleen (5% vs 30%). Reduction of lymphocyte proportion was due to relative increase of PMN number, not the decrease of absolute number of lymphocytes. This increasing number of PMN may explain the diminished immune response, assessed with whole spleen cells in a murine model. These results also suggest that trafficking of PMN may be important for the recovery from thermal trauma. In addition, the Th/Ts ratio of injured mice was comparable to that of control group, which is not likely to be a critical factor leading to alteration of immunity in thermal injury.
Electrochemical Study of Some Bis(metal-trisbipyridyl) Complexes Bridged with Xylene Groups

It is known that metal-bipyridyl complexes shows photochemically and electrochemically interesting properties. In order to investigate the intramolecular metal-metal interaction between metal-ligand complexes which was connected with a spacer group. Some bis(metal-trisbipyridyl) complexes bridged with xylene groups were prepared. The electrochemistry of these complexes was studied. Osmium complexes showed a peak near + 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl due to adsorption on glassy carbon electrode in CH_2Cl_2, whereas ruthenium complexes showed a peak at 1.3 V. The adsorption on electrode was observed by frequency response of EQCM. Also, Cyclic Voltammetry of Nafion coating incorporated with [(Os(bpy)_2)_2(oxdby)]^4+ showed reduction-reoxidation waves in H_2SO_4 solution.

We have calculated theoretical Hugoniot of simple metals in hot metallic liquid. This is done by combining the Gibbs-Bogoliubov inequality for the ionic free energy and the second order pseudoptential theory of simple metals for the core-valence interaction. For aluminum, theoretical results are in good agreement with shock compression data up to 10 Mbar.

Nelumbo nucifera has been used for many purposes from the prehistoric times Today, N nucifera is considered by many botanists as having great potential as a genetic resource This research used molecular markers to identify geographical genomic differentiation of .V nucifera based on the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) method Data matrix was made from 13 primers x 62 genetic characters The profile of amplification products was almost shown to have polymorphic band patterns Numbers of genetic characters represented as autopomorphy and synapomorphy were 3 and 6 each These numbers occupy 14.5% among the total genetic characters These results showed that the genome of N nucifera had high genetic diversity The genome of N nucifera was divided into two subgenomic groups Subgenomic group I was differentiated from an early stage and had great genomic diversity Subgenomic group Ⅱ was differentiated into 3-4 small groups Geographical genomic differentiation of N nucifera is differentiated in three directions from southeastem region(cluster I region) to northwestern region of the Korean peninsula(cluster Ⅱ region)

The cytogenetic studies on inversion polymorphisms and gonadal dysgenesis(GD) were carried in September and October in 1995 from Chonju natural population of Drosophila melanogaster. On inversion polymorphisms, a total of 465 females, eight different inversions were found, all of them were identified to be paracentric inversion. An average frequency of wild flies carrying one or more inversions and mean number of inversions per individual were 42.3% and 0.512 respectively. To analysis of the gonadal dysgenesis with P-M system, a total of 201 lines were used. The P factor activity appeared to be nearly inactive. In tests for cytotype and P activity, about 30% of tested lines were characterized as M cytotype and the remaining lines(70%) as Q strains. Chonju wild populations of Drosophila melanogaster are composed of both Q and M strains.

The degradation of phenanthrene by bioremediation and bioremediation/compost combined systems was studied. and soil/compost. Environmental contamination by synthetic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) has become a major pollution problem. Many of these molecules are potentially toxic and carcinogenic. Some PAH compounds occur naturally at a low concentration in soils. Compositing is quicker, more controlled, and requies less space then landfarming. Although compositing is slower and less complete than incineration, it is significantly more cost-effective. The effect of surfactant on the biodegradation of remaining organic pollutants in the washed soil were tested for each surfactant. Biodegradation of PAH was increased as decreasing the mole fraction of hydrophilic oxyethylene group of surfactants. Yeast producing sophorolipid was determined to be a good biosurfactant for the compositing to reduce the hydrophobic organic compound from the contaminated soil.

The effects of physical conditions such as inoculum size, medium composition and dissolved oxygen concentration were studied for Aspergillus niger. Cell wall composition was measured by FTIR. Biosorption of heavy metals analysis was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer(AAS). As inoculum size increased, fungal morphology was changed from pellet form to free mycelium and the fractal value of mycelium was decreased in submerged culture. Changing from pellet form to free mycelium, hydrophobicity of cell wall was influenced by the content of phosphates in cell wall(P I /CH, PII/CH). Adsorption of heavy metal was also influenced by the content of amdies in cell wall (Am I /CH, Am ll/CH). Amount of citric acid production was influenced by the biomass. Morphological type was worthier free mycelium form than pellet form, considering heavy metals adsorption and citric acid production.
