      • A Study on the Use of Multi-media in Tourism English

Lee, Seung Jae 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 2005 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.10

Tourism being a leisure activity, tourists are more attracted by images, which subsequently influence on their determination. The solid printed materials as a source of information in the 20C are giving way to the multi-media which play a major role to form a destination image. The recent development of technology brings wide selection of tourist destinations to the tourists and multi-media to classrooms, which enable students to stimulate imagination and encourage communication as visual aids. To illustrate the impact of multi-media on tourism English classrooms, a survey was conducted and the result shows that tourism classes use multi-media more than other English classes. 20 students majoring in tourism are in-depth interviewed for the analysis of the survey result. Consequently, the three factors, that is, subject tendency, student tendency, and teacher tendency combining with the infrastructure makes the tourism classroom more use of multi-media.

      • The Place of Intonation in Discourse and SLA

Kim, Myung-Hee 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 2000 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.5

This paper reviews prior research on the primary roles played by intonation in discourse and discusses its importance in second language acquisition and teaching. Based on the discussion, I suggest three main discourse functions of intonation, as ⅰ) a marker of discourse units, ⅱ) a marker of information structure, and lastly ⅲ) a marker of interactional structure. I also emphasize the importance of intonation in second language acquisition and suggest some teaching principles for successful communication.

      • An Autosegmental Analysis of Korean Vowel Harmony

Myung-Hee Kim 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 1997 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.2

This paper attempts to account for vowel harmony in Korean sound symbolic words In accounting for the process, I will argue for the superiority of an autosegmental analysis over a linear analysis I will also present two possible approaches about neutral vowels It has been more or less popular to have neutral vowel fully specified on the segmental level, but the Korean evidence, even though it is slim, indicates that the other analysis, full participation by the neutral vowels followed by a rule severing its association with the harmonizing feature, might be more appropriate (Kangwon National University)

      • 자질유인 이론과 핵이동 제약

김혜경 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 1997 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.2

This paper examines head movement constraint, HMC and the Attract-F theory According to Chomsky(1986), HMC is that movement of a zero-level category is restricted to the position of a head that governs the maximal projection In Chomsky(1995), however, HMC is largely inoperative and rather it is understood to apply to feature-movement So this paper aims to research if the Attract-F theory can explain head movement satisfactorily without stipulating a special principle, HMC For this purpose, this study assumes the minimalist framework of Chomsky(1995) with some modification (Ewha Womans University)

      • Control in English and Korean

Dami Lee 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 1997 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.2

This paper examines control in Korean and English in terms of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics Data indicate that pragmatics plays more important role than syntactic and semantic principles in Korean, while syntactic principle plays much of a role than does pragmatics in English In Korean, the speech act structure of a main verb affects to determine subject/object control and the missing subject of an embedded clause should have a high degree of agentivity, both of which are predicted by pragmatic approach (Hanyang University)

      • A Classification of ECM Verbs in English

Young Yeah Hong 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 1997 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.2

Exceptional Case Marking (henceforth ECM) is a marked phenomenon in English because it does not have a counterpart in many other languages, whereas structural Case assignment does However, ECM verbs are major verbs in English, so we cannot fully account for English Case assignment without saying them The shared property of these verbs is that they assign the accusative Case to the subject of their embedded infinitival clause But the way to assign the Case is slightly different from each other In this paper, I will first review the ECM verbs and their different behaviors And then I will classify them into three types and consider how to handle the difference with proper structures for each type of verbs Finally, I will suggest a more plausible way to explain all the phenomena with a mixed approach between CP analysis and IP analysis (Ewha Womans University)

      • Teaching Listening Comprehension Skills

Eun-Mi Yang 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 1998 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.3

We can say that teaching listening skill is to help the learners covert their input into intake in a way One of the most important factors for the learners to carry out this job successfully in class is related to the authenticity of the listening material When the material has the characteristics of "'real-life", we can draw the learners' active involvement in the listening activity In this paper, I illustrated three sample listening activities which has the authenticity on the part of the learners I tried to develop the students' pragmatic competence as well as linguistic competence through these listening activities (Chungnam University)

      • Coming and Going in English and Korean

Nam, Ji Young 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 2003 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.8

This paper examines the uses of come and go realized in English and of gata and ota in Korean. The main focus is on understanding conventional linguistic knowledge of come and go and also of gata and ota. Therefore, trying to find schematic characteristics of both verbs, we discuss the language specific conventional images. The main difference between come and go lies in the speaker's or addressee's location. The location becomes the destination of motion, and the destination can be regarded as a deictic center. In physical movement, the images of the deictic center include a particular topic place of the viewer or of a participant in the communication act. They further extend to non physical movement in English. However, the deictic center of gata and ota in Korean is limited to the speaker's location.

      • 영어 글쓰기교실의 효율성 : 서울대학교 영어 글쓰기교실 사례연구

황윤희 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 2007 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.12

While establishing a writing center could be one of the solutions to improve students' English writing skills, institutional administrators are concerned about the effectiveness and the sustainability of an EFL writing center, Particularly when it is mostly staffed with EFL tutors. This paper aims to share our two-year experience in designing and running a brand new writing center at Seoul National University: by discussing the initial issues and concerns, introducing the current operating system, and by reporting on the findings from the visitors' exit surveys. It is hoped that this paper will not only convince administrators to see the real value of having a writing center at their institutions, but also to stimulate some ideas about how to create more effective and meaningful EFL writing centers.

      • 영어 문법교육에 관한 고찰

송희심 이화여자대학교 영미학연구소 2005 영어학 연구 Vol.- No.10

In the field of second language acquisition, the role of grammar and grammar education in learning a second language has changed through time. In a similar vein, English grammar education in Korea has shifted its focus and methodology over the years, that is, from a strict focus on forms up-until the early 90's, through the recent focus on communication rather than forms, to the more recent focus-on-form approach. The present study explores how Korea's English grammar education has evolved over the years and delves into the direct and indirect affecting forces underlying the changes. Specifically, the study discusses the changes in grammar education reflected in our national curriculum of English education and in the English classrooms. Implications for teaching grammar are suggested.
