        In this study, I tried to find out the main reason why it is difficult for Korean students to master this foreign language can acquire the new patterns and units efficiently if they systematically master the learning problems arising due to differences between their native language and the language to be learned. In the part dealing with grammatical aspects, I compared English grammatical structure and Korean grammatical structure by making a research item. Unlike English, Korean is a SOV language, where the most important item is the verb. And the order of items in the Korean sentence is quit flexible. Unconsciously, the Korean learners of English are easy to be interfered by the factor of native language especially in the usage of zero-pronoun, word-order, sentence pattern, structural patterns and so on. By biving special attention to the importance of communicative competence, I put special emphasis on the importance of Communicative Approach for Koreans in learning English. I maintained that a well-founded liguistic system is essential in learning English effectively. Therefore, the learners should have a full knowledge of the grammatical structure and the actual usage of the target language.

      • 영어-독일어 인표현체계의 구조연구 : 성편견 현상을 중심으로 Mainly on Sexual Prejudice Phenomena

        The purpose of this study is to analyze comparatively the linguistic person-expression systems of English and German. The analysis is based on the criticism against the sexually prejudiced culture. Language is one of the social activities, and it becomes a means of the social awareness process. And an individual a group can be identified, or rejected, or discriminated, or fabricated, or treated as an equal rightful individual and group through language. These phenomena are comparatively analyzed by using person-expression systems can be studied according to such viewpoints as morphological, demonstrative and semantic ones. This thesis deals with linguistic tools used in designating a male and female in English and German. An apporach the problems of sexual subdivision and abstraction is required. There are grammatical, lexical and word coinage methods in sex subdivision. As a grammatical method of distinguishing sexes, articles are used in German when participles are nominalized. Grammatical distinctions are made in the singulars, but neutralized in the plurals. Here, such extralinguistic factors as class structures and labor division show male or female suitability.This is a problem. A typical example of the lexical method is a group of words belonging to the kindship field. In addition, there is a method in which a personal pronoun is attached, but nowadays this method gets almost out of use. It is found that a patriarchal way of thinking is working in using these words. The word coinage method is applied only to derivative words. Compound words are excluded because they don't function as a contituent on their own.

        그동안 여러 가지 영어교수법의 이론이 연구되어 왔고 시행되어 왔지만 그 실효성이 많지 않았다는 것이 사실이다. 그것은 이론적인 토대는 비교적 형성되어 있지만 실효성 있는 활용이 부족했다는 사실이 증명된 것이다. 아울러 언어의 문화적 측면도 절대 무시해서는 안된다. 여러 가지 활용될 수 있는 조건을 충족시키려면 지금의 우리나라 여건으로는 매우 힘든 측면들이 많이 있다. 하지만 읽고, 쓰고, 말하고, 듣기등의 네 가지 측면들을 이제는 분리하지 말고 통합해서 가르치고, 학습하는 것은 앞으로 우리가 세계화의 과정에 반드시 갖추어야 할 가장 시급한 교수법이다.

      • 비디오를 활용한 영어교수법

        Nowadays using videos and other forms of authentic materials in the ESL classroom is popular with both teachers and students in Korea. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a language teaching method using videos in the Korean ELS classroom. In this paper English teaching through video is discussed with an emphasis on student-oriented activities. This paper suggests a new type of student-centered language teaching method with a four-phase procedure to improve communicative competence of Korean university students. As this paper is based on the concept of communicative language teaching, providing the students with a natural acquisition context in the classroom is important in this paper. This paper demonstrates that the communication-based English teaching with student-oriented activities through video can contribute to the improvement of communicative competence. It is widely believed that improving communicative competence will ultimately lead to the fluent use of English in real-life situation. If we can create natural language settings in the Korean ESL classroom, learning may be more effective. It is for this reason that student-oriented activities and their feedback have a good deal of pedagogical implication in this paper.

      • CAI를 활용한 한국대학생의 영어교육

        computers make it easy for students to get and use information. The rapid development of computer hardware and software has provided a multitude of new resouices for computer assisted instruction(CAI). Information retrieval and English droadcasting activities via the Internet are helpful to the development of communicative competence as a whole. The students are naturally exposed to global issues and culture in CAI. Computer adaptive testing (CAT) is another promising area of CAI. Potential benefits of CAT are in the areas of reliability, efficiency and standardization that are difficult to achieve with traditional pencil and paper tests. According to the questionnaire, most students think that CAI plays an effective role in language learning. It also shows that CAI can contribute to the development of communicative competence and can offer student-centered activities in language learning. As for the prospects of CAI, most students think that CAI can be a new mechanism for English teaching in the information age. Alongside traditional language learning in the classroom, language learning in cyber universities will likely be popularized in the near future. The computer, however, should be regarded as an aid not a panacea for language teaching. For this reason it may be said that the success of CAI mainly depends on the abilities and efforts of both the teachers and the students.

      • 영어학습 오류에 관한 연구

        The English language has now become an international language. It is a required subject at school in many countries. In Korea as well. students are required to learn English beginning at the third grade of elemantary school from 1997. This study attempts to explore main factors that make it difficult for Korean students to master the English language. The major obstacles, which are considered to lead to interference for Korean learners of English, have been studied under 3 different categories: phonological aspects, grammatical aspects and socio-cultural aspects. In terms of the phonlogical aspects, the differences between the two phonemic systems are discussed; the major factor controlling this part is the "degree of difficulty of english sounds" As for grammatical aspects, Korean students are prone to be interfered by the native language in learning English, especially in the usage of world-order. Some fundamental socio-cultural aspects such as relational utterances, supported by some examples. Special attention is give to the importance of communicative competence. The theoretical background to overcome linguistic interferences in teaching English is shown. The language teaching methods so far have reflected recognition of changes in the discipline of linguistics, sociolinguistics and psychology. We can see some erroers committed by foreign language learners due to the interference phenomena by their mother tongue such as omission, addition, wrong word order and the wrong usage of words. The results of qualitative analysis based on observation of Korean university students who committed errors in classes of English as a foreign language are shown with a conviction that this study will make a contribution in overcoming difficulties for Korean students in learning English.

      • 영어 결속이론의 고찰 : 핵 구구조와 형태론적 자질문법의 접근 Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar vs. Mophological Feature Checking Grammar Approach

        The purpose of this paper is to review some related theoretical theories on binding properties such as Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar and mophological feature checking grammar. Anaphors have defective referential features to be checked off since anaphors have no independent references. If anaphors do not get their defective referential feature checked off, they will violate the Principle of Full Interpretation. These defective referential features of anaphors are checked off by AGRs which share all the feature with NPs in SPEC of AGRp. Anaphors are LF-affixes, beibg affixed to its predicates which take them as their arguments. When an anaphor is affixed to its predicates, for example, v, anaphor+v moves to AGRs to get phi-features and tense features of v checked off. At this position, the anaphor gets its defective referential features checked off by AGRs.

      • The Use of Korean and English by Bilinguals

        Schumann(1978) explains differential success in acquiring L2 in terms of ability, social and psychological distance, and age. Larsen-Freeman (1991), on the other hand, observing that an indivdual's normal facilities do not have equal success at L2 acquisition like L1 say age as the predominant factor with aptitude, social-psychological variables, personality, cognitive style and learning strategies following in importance. This study seeks to discover how acquisition factors work in American-born Koreans, learning Korean as L2. The method was ethnographlc observation of twelve individuals from three different families in different contexis, specifically in the home and at church. In addition, In conducted ethnographic interviews with members of some Korean-American familities, which concerned with the length of residence in the U.S., age, sex, place of birth, occupation and place and degree of education. Subjects were asked directly about their use of primary and secondary language but information about their proficiency in both Korean and English was gathered indirectly. This study shows that of these factors, social and psychological factors are shown to be the most important, especially in terms of motivation from parents. Since older Koreans living in the U.S. tend to have less control of English, they ask their children to learn Korean as L2. Furthermore, the domains in which older Koreans use English as opposed to Korean differ from those of their children's use. American-born children use English in every domain, but their parents use much less English, in certain places like the workplace.

      • Developmental Stages in the Acquisition Process of Acquiring Dative Structures in English by Korean Adult Learners

        The focus of this study is on the effect of learning principles that may account for developmental stages in adult second language acquisition, i.e., the Subset learning Principle(Wexler & Manzini 1987), Generalization (Pinker 1984), and Preemption/loss(Pinker 1984) predict several developmental sequences in SLA. Specifically, the paper examines that these learning principles predict a developmental sequence for dative structure in English by Korean adult learners. The research questions of my study which investigates the operation of these learning principles are the following : (1) Are the developmental processes observed in the acquisition of dative alternation in English affected by title application of learning principles? (2) Do the semantic roles of the associated Noun Phrases affect any developmental sequence in acquiring dative verbs? The paper demonstrates that three learning principles(Subset, Generalization, and Preemption/loss) are operating in the acquisition process of dative alternation in English by L2 learners. The application of these learning principles are ordered and the order of applying these principles showed the three developmental stages: Stage one [NP PP]: operation of learning principle, stage two [NP NP]: operation of the generalization principle, Stage three [NP PP]/[NP NP]: operation of 61e preemption/loss principle. In addition to the investigation of operation of learning principles, the developmental sequence of dative verbs was also examined. It was found that Korean learners preferred recipient verbs to benefactive verbs in acquiring the dative verbs.

      • The House of the Seven Gables에 나타난 죄와 구원

        Nathaniel Hawthorne thinks the sin stemmed from avarice and arrogance for his main theme in The House of the Seven Gables. He thought avarice and haughtiness as the worst evils committed by humans. Whether it comes from original sin or from unpardonable sin as the authors suggests, the cause of the sin can be traced back to avarice and pride of those who commit the sin. Hawthorne suggests the possibility of salvation in the generation of Judge Pyncheon and Holgrave by Phoebe's appearance as a symbol of love. Goddess of light and happiness, Phoebe, not like the Pyncheon, personify belief of love. The union of Holgrave and Phoebe makes it possible for both families to gain salvation from their sin. It is this process from sin into salvation for those who were born with a tendency toward evil. After their experience of love, the sinners, though owned with the sense of the guilt, at last prove the greatness of love by putting it into action. After all, Hawthorne presents human's affection springing from the heart, as a contrasting view of arrogance.
