In this study Ni/nano-TiC functional composite coatings were produced by electro-codeposition of TiC nanoparticles (50 nm mean diameter) with nickel on 304L stainless steel support. Coatings were obtained from a Watts classical solution in which TiC nanoparticles were added. The surface morphology, chemical composition, structure, roughness and thickness, were evaluated in relation to the effect of TiC nanoparticles incorporation into Ni matrix. It was found that incorporation of TiC nanoparticles into the nickel matrix produces morphological changes in the deposit and increases the roughness. The fretting wear behavior in wet conditions of the obtained coatings was evaluated on a ball-on-plate configuration. To evaluate the wet fretting wear (tribocorrosion) behavior the open circuit potential was measured before, during and after the fretting tests at room temperature in the solution that simulates the primary water circuit of Pressurized Water Reactors. The results show that Ni/nano-TiC composite coatings exhibited a low friction coefficient, high nanohardness and fretting wear resistance in wet conditions compared with pure Ni coatings.

Bovine trypanosomiasis is a significant health concern for livestock intensification in Côte d’Ivoire. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of pathogenic trypanosomes and identify the most infected cattle breed in northern Côte d'Ivoire. We examined 700 cattle and found that polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was more sensitive (12.3%) than microscopic observation (5.6%). Among the trypanosome species detected in naturally infected cattle, Trypanosoma vivax was 7.3%, Trypanosoma simiae tsavo was 6.7%, and Trypanosoma congolense was 0.4%. The overall prevalence of trypanosome infection in all cattle breeds was 12.3%, while the prevalence in individual breeds was 14.8%, 7.3%, 10.6%, and 12.3% for N’Dama, Baoule, Zebu, and Mere breed, respectively. The infected animals had low packed cell volume, influencing the prevalence. Our findings indicate that bovine trypanosomes are prevalent in Côte d’Ivoire, and their prevalence varies by region and breed. These pathogens include T. vivax, T. simiae tsavo, and T. congolense.

As the plants grow in a fixed place, they can be a good indicator which reflects the level of environmental pollution. It is necessary for them to develop a strategy to cope with stress under unfavorable environmental conditions. In this study, spindle trees (Euonymus japonica) were collected from a clean area (Kijang) as well as a heavily polluted area (Onsan) to check applicability of irradiation combined with plant bioassay to environmental monitoring. The leaves were irradiated with 0, 50 and 100 Gy of gamma rays, and then evaluated for antioxidative capacity with 1,1 diphenyl 2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and superoxide dismutase (SOD) analysis. The result shows that there was no significant changes in SOD and EDA (Electron Donationg Ability) in the samples collected from a polluted area. In the meanwhile, SOD increased in the samples from a clean area until 6 to 10 hours after irradiation, then it decreased gradually until 24 hours after irradiation. In conclusion, the plants in the polluted area have developed higher resistance to oxidative stress induced by ionizing radiation than those in the relatively clean area. Irradiation combined with plant bioassay on enzymatic activities and free radical scavenging capacity has proven to be a possible tool for biomonitoring the environmental pollution.

The origin of white photoluminescence in polysilanes has long been disputed, and this emission is closely connected with information recording in nanotechnologies. We elucidated UV degradation of an archetypal model polymer poly[methyl(phenyl)silane] by using a new method for electronic structure mapping of organic semiconductors, energy-resolved electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ER-EIS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. UV exposure at 345 nm resulted in two defect bands above the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in the energy region from −5.5 eV to −3.5 eV with respect to the zero vacuum energy level. The respective density of states was 1016 − 1017 cm−3eV−1, and the total integrated concentration was 0 − 1017 cm−3. The photoluminescence in the long-wavelength region gave wide bands with photon energies from 2.2 eV to 3.2 eV (corresponding to wavelengths from 600 nm to 390 nm). The observed bands were interpreted by assuming the formation of energetically distributed Si branching radiative states, whose distribution in the HOMO − lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap was observed by using ER-EIS. The quantum efficiency of defect state formation increased from (x)345 nm = 0.0045 to (x)290 nm = 0.053. The obtained results may contribute to the production of effective polysilane nanomasks and to information recording.
Antibacterial and remineralization effects of orthodontic bonding agents containing bioactive glass

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical and biological properties of orthodontic bonding agents containing silver- or zinc-doped bioactive glass (BAG) and determine the antibacterial and remineralization effects of these agents. Methods: BAG was synthesized using the alkali-mediated solgel method. Orthodontic bonding agents containing BAG were prepared by mixing BAG with flowable resin. Transbond<SUP>TM</SUP> XT (TXT) and Charmfil<SUP>TM</SUP> Flow (CF) were used as controls. Ion release, cytotoxicity, antibacterial properties, the shear bond strength, and the adhesive remnant index were evaluated. To assess the remineralization properties of BAG, micro-computed tomography was performed after pH cycling. Results: The BAG-containing bonding agents showed no noticeable cytotoxicity and suppressed bacterial growth. When these bonding agents were used, demineralization after pH cycling began approximately 200 to 300 μm away from the bracket. On the other hand, when CF and TXT were used, all surfaces that were not covered by the adhesive were demineralized after pH cycling. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that orthodontic bonding agents containing silver- or zinc-doped BAG have stronger antibacterial and remineralization effects compared with conventional orthodontic adhesives; thus, they are suitable for use in orthodontic practice.
