The aim of this study was to evaluate the relaxant and anti-inflammatory effects of two thalidomide analogs as phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) inhibitors in pregnant rat uterus. Uteri from Wistar female rats were isolated at 19 day of pregnancy. Uterine samples were used in functional studies to evaluate the inhibitory effects of the thalidomide analogs, methyl 3-(4-nitrophthalimido)-3-(3,4- dimethoxyphenyl)-propanoate (4NO2PDPMe) and methyl 3-(4-aminophthalimido)- 3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-propanoate (4APDPMe), on prostaglandin-F2α (PGF2α)- induced phasic, K+-induced tonic, and Ca2+-induced contractions. Accumulation of cAMP was quantified in uterine homogenates by ELISA. Anti-inflammatory effect was assessed by using ELISA for determination of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) and interleukin (IL)-1β, and anti-inflammatory IL-10, from uterine explants stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Nifedipine, forskolin and rolipram were used as positive controls where required. Both thalidomide analogs induced a significant inhibition of the uterine contractions induced by the pharmaco- and electro-mechanic stimuli. Nifedipine and forskolin were more potent than the analogs to inhibit the uterine contractility, but these were more potent than rolipram, and 4APDPMe was equieffective to nifedipine. Thalidomide analogs increased uterine cAMP-levels in a concentration-dependent manner. The LPS-induced TNFα and IL-1β uterine secretion was diminished in a concentrationdependent fashion by both analogs, whereas IL-10 secretion was increased significantly. The thalidomide analogs induced utero-relaxant and anti-inflammatory effects, which were associated with the increased cAMP levels as PDE-4 inhibitors in the pregnant rat uterus. Such properties place these thalidomide analogs as potentially safe and effective tocolytic agents in a field that urgently needs improved pharmacological treatments, as in cases of preterm labor.
Splenic myeloid metaplasia in warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA): a retrospective study

BackgroundSplenic myeloid metaplasia (SMM) is a kind of extramedullary hematopoiesis, whereasits clinical significance in wAIHA remains unclear. The aim of this study is evaluating thefrequency and clinical characteristics of SMM, compared with splenic-congestion (SC). MethodsWe included patients with wAIHA treated in a Mexican tertiary hospital between January1992 and December 2015. All patients received steroids as first-line treatment and splenectomyas second-line treatment. ResultsAmong the thirty-six splenectomized patients, 15 (41.6%) and 21 (58.4%) were diagnosedas SMM and SC, respectively. No differences were found in clinical characteristicsbetween two groups. SMM patients showed lower platelet count (147×109/L vs. 240×109/L, P=0.02) and higher presence of anti-dsDNA antibodies (40% vs. 4.7%,P=0.01) than SC patients. Although the complete response (CR) rate with first-line treatmentwas lower in SMM patients (13.3% vs. 47.6%; P=0.04), post-splenectomy mediandisease-free-survival (DFS) was longer (16.2 mo vs. 5.1 mo; P=0.19). Univariate/multivariateanalysis showed that achieving CR during first-line treatment (OR 0.3, 95% CI:0.03‒0.94, P=0.03) and higher platelet count (OR 0.99, 95% CI: 0.98‒0.99, P=0.03)were protective factors for SMM; and anti-dsDNA titer higher than 9.6 IU/dL was a riskfactor for SMM (OR 2.76, 95% CI: 1.48‒5.14, P<0.001). ConclusionThe wAIHA patients with SMM have different biological profiles with those without SMM. This study is the first trial evaluating the significance of histopathological spleen findingsand their association with rheumatologic profile.
Zn-22Al-2Cu Alloy Phase Transformations at Different Homogenizing Temperatures

The effect of the homogenizing temperature on phase transformations and hardening behavior was studied in a Zn-22Al-2Cu (wt%) alloy homogenized for 7 days at 315, 350, and 390°C. The homogenized alloy was subsequently quenched and aged naturally at room temperature or artificially at 200°C for different time periods. The β phase was unstable at room temperature and it decomposed through the β→α+ηreaction during natural aging. An increase in the homogenizing temperature caused a decrease in the kinet-ics of the decomposition of the β phase in the alloy. Natural aging also caused an increase in the hardness due to the formation of nanometric grains with α and η phases and the presence of an intermetallic εphase. This result agrees with the time exponents (n) between 1.5 and 2.6, which were obtained using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov equation for the decomposition of the β phase. The transformed frac-tion curves exhibited the fastest and slowest growth kinetics of the â phase decomposition at homogeniz-ing temperatures of 350 and 390°C, respectively. The artificial aging induced the formation of equilibrium phases and began a decrease in hardness due to the coarsening process of the equilibrium α, η, and τ'phases.

ZIF 재료는 독특한 기체 분리 특성을 포함한 물리적, 화학적 특성 때문에 큰 관심을 받아왔다. 본 연구에서는 α-alumina 지지체 위에 결함 없고 연속적인 ZIF-7 막을 형성하는 새롭고 효율적인 방법이 연구되었다. 지지체 위에 시딩 (seeding)을 하지 않고 직접 ZIF-7 박막을 합성하는데 정전분무법이 처음으로 적용되었다. 이 방법은 전구체 용액을 직접 정 전분무함으로 α-alumina 지지체에 ZIF-7 박막을 형성할 수 있었다. ZIF-7 박막은 XRD, FE-SEM, 단일 기체 투과 장치 등을 이용해 분석하였다. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been the focus of interest for their physical and chemical properties, especially, for their extraordinary gas separation properties. In this study, a novel and efficient method for the fabrication of continuous ZIF-7 film on α-alumina substrate has been investigated. The electrospray deposition method was tried for the first time to prepare ZIF films directly without the necessity of prior substrate seeding. It has the advantage of depositing thin ZIF-7 films directly on the α-alumina substrate by electrospraying the precursor solution. The ZIF-7 films have been characterized through XRD, FE-SEM, and single gas permeation tests.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-based membranes are emerging materials that are highlyattractive for gas separation and purification. Highly reproducible defect-free ZIF membranes with well-defined pore structures can be formed in a number of ways. The performance of ZIF membranes dependslargely on the preparation technique, application type, and operating conditions. Here, we review themethods of ZIF membrane preparation and discuss their performance in separating condensable andincondensable gases. In addition, recent developments in membrane synthesis and ways to improve thegas separation performance of ZIF membranes are discussed to promote industrial application andcommercialization of ZIF membranes.
Highly selective micro-porous ZIF-8 membranes prepared by rapid electrospray deposition

Highly selective ZIF-8 membranes were successfully prepared by electrospray deposition for H2/CO2separation. This novel method produced ZIF-8membranes in a facile and time-efficientmanner using anelectrostatic force-assisted coating approach. In addition, the membrane thickness could be controlledeasily by simply varying the deposition time. Results from the experiment indicate that the membraneperformed preeminently in comparison with previously reported glassy and polymeric membranes forH2/CO2 separation. The H2 permeance of the ZIF-8 membrane prepared at 70 8C for 55.71 min was4.23 10 7 mol m 2 s 1 Pa 1 with H2/CO2 selectivity of 20.3.
Robust GPI Control of a New Parallel Rehabilitation Robot of Lower Extremities

In this paper, we propose a new robot for lower limbs rehabilitation by using a parallel structure. The goal of this robot is not only to produce smooth and precise motions for ankle, knee, and hip, but also to support trajectory tracking. Its parallel configuration was based on the four-bar mechanism in order to have a more stable and robust structure. For the kinematic analysis, the length of one bar was considered variable. For the dynamic analysis, the Euler-Lagrange method was used to define the equations of motion. For the robot control, the robust generalized proportional integral (GPI) controller was proposed to guarantee safe rehabilitation movements. This parallel robot not only showed good results, but also showed various movement possibilities for lower limbs rehabilitation.
Classical Plasmonics: Wave Propagation Control at Subwavelength Scale

In this paper, surface plasmons polariton propagation and manipulation is reviewed in the context of experiments and modeling of optical images. We focus our attention in the interaction of surface plasmon polaritons with arrays of micro-scatereres and nanofabricated structures. Numerical simulations and experimental results of different plasmonic devices are presented. Plasmonic beam manipulation opens up numerous possibilities for application in biosensing, nanophotonics, and in general in the area of surface optics properties.
