        Assessment of Cortical Visual Impairment in Infants with Periventricular Leukomalacia: a Pilot Event-Related fMRI Study

        Objective: We wanted to investigate the usefulness of event-related (ER) functional MRI (fMRI) for the assessment of cortical visual impairment in infants with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). Materials and Methods: FMRI data were collected from 24 infants who suffered from PVL and from 12 age-matched normal controls. Slow ER fMRI was performed using a 3.0T MR scanner while visual stimuli were being presented. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Parametric Mapping software (SPM2), the SPM toolbox MarsBar was used to analyze the region of interest data, and the time to peak (TTP) of hemodynamic response functions (HRFs) was estimated for the surviving voxels. The number of activated voxels and the TTP values of HRFs were compared. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to compare visual impairment evaluated by using Teller Acuity Cards (TAC) with the number of activated voxels in the occipital lobes in all patients. Results: In all 12 control infants, the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal was negative and the maximum response was located in the anterior and superior part of the calcarine fissure, and this might correspond to the anterior region of the primary visual cortex (PVC). In contrast, for the 24 cases of PVL, there were no activated pixels in the PVC in four subjects, small and weak activations in six subjects, deviated activations in seven subjects and both small and deviated activations in three subjects. The number of active voxels in the occipital lobe was significantly correlated with the TAC-evaluated visual impairment (p < 0.001). The mean TTP of the HRFs was significantly delayed in the cases of PVL as compared with that of the normal controls. Conclusion: Determining the characteristics of both the BOLD response and the ER fMRI activation may play an important role in the cortical visual assessment of infants with PVL.       • Unsteady galloping of sharp-edged bluff bodies: experimental observations on the effect of the wind angle of attack

        Light-weight or low-damped structures may encounter the unsteady galloping instability that occurs at low reduced wind speeds, where the classical quasi-steady assumption is invalid. Although this unsteady phenomenon has been widely studied for rectangular cross sections with one side perpendicular to the incidence flow, the effect of the mean wind angle of attack has not been paid enough attention yet. With four sectional models of different side ratios and geometric shapes, the presented research focuses on the effect of the wind angle of attack on unsteady galloping instability. In static tests, comparatively strong vortex shedding force was noticed in the middle of the range of flow incidence where the lift coefficient shows a negative slope. In aeroelastic tests with a low Scruton number, the typical unsteady galloping, which is due to an interaction with vortex-induced vibration and results in unrestricted oscillation initiating at the Kármán vortex resonance wind speed, was observed for the wind angles of attack that characterize relatively strong vortex shedding force. In contrast, for the wind angles of attack with relatively weak shedding force, an “atypical” unsteady galloping was found to occur at a reduced wind speed clearly higher than the Kármán-vortex resonance one. These observations are valid for all four wind tunnel models. One of the wind tunnel models (with a bridge deck cross section) was also tested in a turbulent flow with an intensity about 9%, showing only the atypical unsteady galloping. However, the wind angle of attack with the comparatively strong vortex shedding force remains the most unfavorable one with respect to the instability threshold in low Scruton number conditions.

        Convert one outfit to more looks: factors influencing young female college consumers’ intention to purchase transformable apparel

        Transformable apparel offers two or more functional and/or alternative aesthetic styles through various manipulative methods, which is considered a sustainable alternative in the fashion industry to reduce excess clothing consumption. The study intends to identify the influences of environmental apparel knowledge, environmental beliefs, and personal values on consumers’ intention to purchase transformable apparel products. The theory of reasoned action (TRA) was applied as the foundation for the conceptual framework, which considered attitude and social factors to be crucial factors influencing the intention. Data were collected from 306 female college students in the United States through an online survey. Proposed hypotheses were tested by structural equation modeling (SEM). The results confirmed the positive influences of the tendency for creative choice, environmental beliefs, environmental apparel knowledge, and attitude on female college students’ intention to purchase transformable apparel products. Furthermore, practical and theoretical implications based on the results were discussed as well.

        Controllable synthesis of bowl-shaped porous carbon materials through didodecyldimethylammonium bromide for high performance supercapacitors

        A series of bowl-shaped porous carbon materials was successfully synthesized by the use of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide as the soft template agent. By controlling the dosage of the soft template agent and the water/ethanol ratio of the solvent, the size and structure of the carbon materials can be precisely controlled. The prepared carbon materials with stacked bowl structure have good specific surface area (1,380.20 m2 g−1), large pore volume (1.27 cm3 g−1) and high heteroatom N doping amount (6.68 at.%). Moreover, electrochemical tests in 6 M KOH demonstrated impressive electrochemical performance, where the specific capacity of the typical materials was measured to be 191.0 F g−1 (at the current density of 1 A g−1), and the capacity retention rate of typical materials was 80% (at the current density of 10 A g−1).

        Preparation of the Garlic Oil Microcapsule/CS/PVA Nanofiber Membrane and the Antibacterial Properties

        A preparation method of compound foam dressing with antibacterial effect is introduced in this paper. Garlic oil, anatural antibacterial agent was coated with β-CD to form the garlic oil/β-CD microcapsule (MC). Then the microcapsule wasadded to the spinning solution with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) and was spun onto foam dressing to preparegarlic oil/CS/PVA nanofiber/foam compound dressings. The addition of garlic oil/β-CD microcapsule endowed thecompound foam dressing with good antibacterial properties. The results shown that with the increase of MC, the antibacterialactivity of compound dressing was further increased. MC 1.6 displayed the best antibacterial ability against E. coli and S. aureus (67.28 and 69.15 %), respectively. The liquid absorption properties increased from 16.86 % to 17.91 % and themoisture content increased from 3.26 % to 5.29 %, compared to that of foam dressings. The mechanical properties of garlicoil/CS/PVA nanofiber/foam compound dressings increased by 4.6 N mm-2 compared with the foam compound dressings, andthe elongation at break increased by about 11.3 %.

        Characterization of the Arabidopsis At5-MMP Matrix Metalloproteinase

        The plant extracellular matrix (ECM) represents the continuum between the plasma membrane and the apoplast, and undergoes significant modifications during plant growth, development and stress responses. While matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are significant proteolytic modulators of the vertebrate ECM, they remain poorly understood in plant biology. Of the five Arabidopsis thaliana MMPs, At5-MMP is the most constitutively expressed and was chosen for further characterization. Autoactivation of recombinant At5-MMP generated a functional metalloproteinase which exhibited maximum proteolytic activity at pH 7.5, and a broad level of activity into the basic range. Furthermore, an E to A mutation within the HEIGH portion of the At5-MMP catalytic domain abolished proteolytic activity. Using GFP-tagged At5-MMP variants expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana, the predicted signal peptide was required for targeting to the cell periphery, and deletion of this peptide resulted in intracellular, localized At5-MMP accumulation. Using a generic MMP cleavage PXG(L/I) peptide sequence, the predicted Arabidopsis extracellular proteome was screened for potential candidate MMP substrates. The extracellular domain of one candidate, WAK1, was expressed as a recombinant protein and shown to be cleaved internally at specific sites by At5-MMP in vitro. These same cleavage sites were identified using mammalian MMP cleavage prediction software.

        Lightweight Intrusion Detection of Rootkit with VMI-Based Driver Separation Mechanism

        Intrusion detection techniques based on virtual machine introspection (VMI) provide high temper-resistance in comparison with traditional in-host anti-virus tools. However, the presence of semantic gap also leads to the performance and compatibility problems. In order to map raw bits of hardware to meaningful information of virtual machine, detailed knowledge of different guest OS is required. In this work, we present VDSM, a lightweight and general approach based on driver separation mechanism: divide semantic view reconstruction into online driver of view generation and offline driver of semantics extraction. We have developed a prototype of VDSM and used it to do intrusion detection on 13 operation systems. The evaluation results show VDSM is effective and practical with a small performance overhead.

        Effect of PCL-b-PEG Oligomer Containing Ionic Elements on Phase Interfacial Properties and Aggregated Structure of PLA/PCL Blends

        The polycaprolactone (PCL)-b-polyethylene glycol (PEG) oligomer (Oli) and its derivative containing ionic elements (ILs) were used as interfacial compatibilizers and regulators, and the polylactic acid (PLA)/PCL/Oli and PLA/PCL/ILs blends were prepared by solution blending. The effects of Oli and ILs on the phase interfacial properties, aggregated structure, crystallization and mechanical properties of PLA/PCL blends were systematically studied. The results show that the ILs with strong interfacial emulsification ability can improve the dispersion of PCL in PLA matrix, and enhance the two-phase interfacial adhesion. When the content of ILs is 5 %, ion clusters can form and alleviate the restricted crystallization of PCL, and promote the segment movement of PLA through the non-covalent bonding of ionic elements. So the crystallization ability of PLA and PCL improve simultaneously. ILs have a strong regulatory effect on the phase interfacial morphology and aggregated structure of PLA/PCL blends, and the PLA/PCL blends containing high content of 5 % ILs can significantly improve the mechanical properties of PLA/PCL blends.
