Cone-beam computed tomography assessment of mandibular asymmetry in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients

        Ilknur Veli,Tancan Uysal,Faruk Izzet Ucar,Murat Eruz,Torun Ozer 대한치과교정학회 2011 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.41 No.6

Objective: To determine whether there is any difference between the cleft and non-cleft sides of the mandible in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients, or the right and left sides in control patients; and to determine if there is any difference between the mandibular asymmetry of UCLP patients and that of control patients. Methods: We examined cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 15 patients with UCLP and 15 age- and gender-matched control patients. We evaluated 8 linear, 3 surface, and 3 volumetric measurements and compared the cleft/non-cleft sides of UCLP patients and the right/left sides of controls. Results: There were no statistically significant gender differences in any linear, surface, or volumetric measurement. The single significant side-to-side difference in UCLP patients was a longer coronoid unit on the cleft side than on the non-cleft side (p = 0.046). Body volume was significantly lower in the UCLP group than in the control group (p = 0.008). Conclusions: In general, UCLP patients have symmetrical mandibles, although the coronoid unit length is significantly longer on the cleft side than on the non-cleft side. UCLP patients and controls differed only in body volume. (Korean J Orthod 2011;41(6): 431-439)

Case Reports : Marjolin`s Ulcer Presenting with In-Transit Metastases: A Case Report and Literature Review

( Ilknur Altunay ),( Asli Aksu Cerman ),( Damlanur Sakiz ),( Bilge Ates ) 대한피부과학회 2015 Annals of Dermatology Vol.27 No.4

Marjolin``s ulcer is an aggressive cutaneous malignancy common in previously traumatized or chronically inflamed skin. It has high regional metastasis and fatality rates. Our patient presented with subcutaneous nodules and ulcerations on the right limb. He had a history of osteomyelitis of the fifth toe. Histopathological examination of the nodule and ulceration demonstrated squamous cell carcinoma. The nodules and ulcerations were in-transit metastases of Marjolin``s ulcer. Here, we present a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising at a site of a chronic osteomyelitis with resultant in-transit metastases. (Ann Dermatol 27(4) 442∼ 445, 2015)

The Effectiveness of Progressive Muscle Relaxation on the Postpartum Quality of Life

        Ilknur Goksin,Sultan Ayaz-Alkaya 한국간호과학회 2018 Asian Nursing Research Vol.12 No.2

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) on the quality of life of women during postpartum period. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. The participants consisted of primiparous women who had experienced a vaginal birth in the obstetrics department of a hospital. Thirty women in the intervention group and 30 women in the control group were included. Data were collected using the Maternal Postpartum Quality of Life Questionnaire (MAPP-QoL) between June 2016 and April 2017. PMR was applied to the intervention group. PMR was performed as contracting a muscle group and then relaxing it, moving (or progressing) from one muscle group to another. Results: The mean pretest and posttest scores of the MAPP-QoL in the intervention group were 24.43 ( 4.58 and 26.07 ( 4.58, respectively (t 食 2.73, p < .05). The mean pretest and posttest scores of the MAPP-QoL in the control group were 23.29 ( 4.37 and 21.99 ( 5.58, respectively (t 食 2.23, p < .05). The difference between the mean scores of the women in the intervention and control groups before PMR was not statistically significant (t 食 0.99, p > .05), whereas the difference between the groups after PMR was found to be statistically significant (t 食 3.09, p < .05). Conclusion: Postpartum quality of life of women was increased after PMR. It is recommended that PMR be taught to women who are admitted to obstetrics and outpatient clinics and home visits be completed to expand the use of PMR.

      • Inhibitory Effects of Dunning Rat Prostate Tumor Fluid on Proliferation of the Metastatic MAT-LyLu Cell Line

Bugan, Ilknur,Altun, Seyhan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.2

Tumor fluid accumulation occurs in both human cancer and experimental tumor models. Solid tumors show a tendency to tumor fluid accumulation because of their anatomical and physiological features and this may be influenced by molecular factors. Fluid accumulation in the peri-tumor area also occurs in the Dunning model of rat prostate cancer as the tumor grows. In this study, the effects of tumor fluids that were obtained from Dunning prostate tumor-bearing Copenhagen rats on the strongly metastatic MAT-LyLu cell line were investigatedby examining the cell's migration and tumor fluid's toxicity and the kinetic parameters such as cell proliferation, mitotic index, and labelling index. In this research, tumor fluids were obtained from rats injected with $2{\times}10^5$ MAT-LyLu cells and treated with saline solution, and 200 nM tetrodotoxin (TTX), highly specific sodium channel blocker was used. Sterilized tumor fluids were added to medium of MAT-LyLu cells with the proportion of 20% in vitro. Consequently, it was demonstrated that Dunning rat prostate tumor fluid significantly inhibited proliferation (up to 50%), mitotic index, and labeling index of MAT-LyLu cells (up to 75%) (p<0.05) but stimulated the motility of the cells in vitro.

Detailed morphological analysis of axolotl sperm

Keskin, Ilknur,Gurgen, Duygu Gursoy,Avinca, Didem,Ozdemir, Ekrem Musa,Keskin, Suat Utku,Karabulut, Seda The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2021 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.61 No.3

The axolotl has extraordinary regeneration capacity compared to other vertebrates. This remarkable potential has been attributed to its life-long neoteny, characterized by the exhibition of embryonic characteristics at the adult stage. A recent study provided a detailed morphological analysis of the sperm morphology of the Ambystoma mexicanum using routine and detailed histological techniques. The primary purpose of the present study is to describe a simple and inexpensive method for evaluating the morphology of axolotl sperm. In this study, spermatophore structures were collected and spread on slides and air-dried. The slides were stained with periodic acid Schiff, toluidine blue, Masson's trichrome, Giemsa, Spermac, and Diff-Quik dye for a morphological examination. The slides were coated with gold/palladium for a scanning electron microscopy examination. The sperm of the axolotl consisted of an elongated head, a neck, and a flagellum covered with an undulating membrane. The lengths of the midpiece, tail, and head were 8.575 ㎛, 356.544 ㎛, and 103.661 ㎛, respectively. In the flagellum part, the wavy membrane structure, whose function has not been explained, surrounds the tail. The data obtained from this study will constitute an important step in designing future research on the reproductive and regeneration capacity of the axolotl.

Evaluation of P57, P53 and Ki67 Expression in Meningiomas

Kucukosmanoglu, Ilknur,Karanis, Meryem Ilkay Eren,Unlu, Yasar,Coven, Ilker The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2022 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.65 No.4

Objective : We conducted this study with the aim of predicting the biological behavior of meningiomas, and determining the benefits of associating histological subtype and grade with the expression of proliferative markers and tumor suppressor proteins. Methods : The study included 29 patients with primary intracranial and intraspinal meningioma diagnosed in the pathology laboratory of Konya City Hospital between January 2014 and December 2020. Clinicopathological characteristics of the patients including parameters such as age and gender were obtained from the hospital records. Histopathological findings were obtained by re-evaluating the preparations stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin, which were extracted from the archive, and by evaluating new sections obtained from paraffin blocks of patients stained with Ki67, p53, and p57 immunohistochemical stains. Results : A moderate correlation was found between tumor size and Ki67 proliferation index (PI) (p=0.003, r=0.530). There was no significant difference between grade I and grade II tumors in terms of p53 (p=0.184) and p57 (p=0.487) expressions. There were higher levels of Ki67 PI in grade II tumors. The histological subtypes of the tumor had no significant difference with Ki67 PI (p=0.018), p53 (p=0.662), and p57 (p=0.368) expressions. Conclusion : In order to obtain more definitive results, there is a need for studies, which are conducted with a greater number of patients and in multiple centers, and in which a long prospective follow-up is planned. The combination of histological, surgical, and imaging markers could make a more sensitive tool for predicting recurrence, and this could also be tested in future studies.
