Computational simulations of the effects of the G229D KCNQ1 mutation on human atrial fibrillation
Zulfa, Indana,Shim, Eun Bo,Song, Kwang-Soup,Lim, Ki Moo Springer-Verlag 2016 JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Vol.66 No.5
<P>Atrial fibrillation (AF) is related to mutations at the genetic level. This includes mutations in genes that encode KCNQ1, a subunit of the I (Ks) channel. Here, we investigate the mechanism of gain-of-function in I (Ks) towards the occurrence of AF. We used the Courtemanche-Ramirez-Nattel (CRN) human atrial cell model (Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 275:H301-H321, 1998) and applied the modification proposed by Hasegawa et al. (Heart Rhythm 11:67-75, 2014) to fit the behavior of I (Ks) due to the G229D mutation in KCNQ1 under a heterozygous mutant form. This was incorporated into two-(2D) and three-dimensional (3D) tissue models, where the mutation sustained a reentrant wave. However, under the wild-type condition, the reentrant wave terminated before the end of our simulations (in 2D, the spiral wave terminated before 10 s, while in 3D, the spiral wave terminated before 13 s). Sustained reentry under the mutation conditions also resulted in a spiral wave breakup in the 3D model, which was sustained until the end of the simulation (20 s), indicating AF.</P>
Empowerment vs. meritocracy discourses in Indonesian public universities: The case of female leaders
Zulfa Sakhiyya,Kirsten Locke 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2019 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.25 No.2
This paper examines the tension between meritocracy and empowerment discourses in Indonesian public universities and its relationship with gender-related leadership representation. The recent emergence of five female rectors signals a change that allows women to undertake leadership roles. We argue that there are two contradictory discourses (i.e., empowerment and meritocracy), which are concurrently visible pertaining to university leadership. The discourse of empowerment promotes gender equity and women’s participation in decision making processes in universities in ways that highlight the historically progressive political agenda of empowerment in Indonesian society. In contrast, the discourse of meritocracy refers to achievement on the basis of individual merit, such as ability and talent. This contradiction is explored through interview data that illuminates the changing conditions of leadership representation in the Indonesian university context. This article makes three contributions to the literature. Firstly, it adds to an underresearched area in higher education in Indonesia. Secondly, it provides a different perspective and analysis of the relationship between gender and higher education by considering both local and international culture. Thirdly, the article offers an argument about the corrosive effect of meritocracy in any university, irrespective of geographical location and local culture.
Genetic diversity of rice germplasm (Oryza sativa L.) of java island, Indonesia
Addieni Zulfa Karimah,Tri Agus Siswoyo,김경민,Mohammad Ubaidillah 한국작물학회 2021 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.24 No.1
The role of genetic diversity in crop germplasm is an important concept within genetic conservation. In this research, 43 accessions were analyzed at the agro-morphological and genetic levels. Clustering based on the agro-morphological resulted in four sub-groups. Analysis at the genetic level was conducted using 22 microsatellites, which revealed a total number of alleles to be 203, with a range per allele between 2 and 17 and an average of 9.2 alleles per locus. The highest and lowest Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) values were found in RM431 and RM11, which were 0.95 and 0.67, respectively. The genetic diversity value ranged from 0.71 to 0.95. The genetic similarity among accessions ranged from 0.00 to 0.90. Clustering based on the genetic relatedness divided the Java rice samples into two major groups. The classification created through this research many inform future breeding programs aimed at improving the quality and quantity of yield production.

The Indonesian government has enforced several social restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) virus, such as closures of in-person schools, public areas, and playgrounds as well as reduced outdoor activities. These restrictions will affect mental health of school-age children and adolescents. The internet is chosen as one of the media to keep academic activities running, but excessive internet use will increase internet addiction and online gaming disorder. This study aimed to understand the prevalence and psychological impacts of internet addiction and online gaming disorder on children and adolescents globally during the pandemic. Systematic searches were carried out on the PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar search engines. All studies were assessed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 criteria and the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. Five studies met the criteria for assessing internet addiction and online gaming disorder cases in children and adolescents. Four studies discussed internet addiction, and one study addressed the negative impacts of online gaming on children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been an increase in internet use and online gaming disruption in children and adolescents in almost all parts of Asian and Australian countries during the COVID-19 pandemic period.
Dynamic Upper Eyelid Reconstruction for Total Periorbital Soft Tissue Loss
Madhubari Vathulya,Nishank Manohar,Achmad Zulfa Juniarto,Vishal Mago,Praveen A Jayaprakash 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.3
Total eyelid defect comprises full-thickness loss of both upper and lower eyelids in a patient. It is a rare and devastating condition with serious implications related to vision, whichmandates early and functional reconstructionwhen associatedwith intact globe. The primary goal is to give a stable coverage for orbital protection but at the same time provide a functional reconstruction of the defect, to allow for adequate mobility of the eyelids so that the patient’s vision is restored to normal with minimal disability. When the defect is massive, and in the absence of loco-regional flaps, microvascular tissue transfer is needed. In this report we describe a radial-artery-based microvascular tissue transfer with a unique innovation utilizing the contralateral frontalis muscle to reconstruct a case of unilateral total upper and lower eyelid loss.
