        Osteochondral allograft transplantation for treating medial femoral condyle subchondral bone cyst in a 14-year-old standardbred horse: a case report

        Allograft arthroplasty is a promising cartilage-resurfacing technique. A 14-year-old horse was diagnosed with a medial femoral condyle subchondral bone cyst. Allografts were harvested from a young donor animal and implanted to fill the cyst cavity. A visual assessment of the surgical site was possible during follow-up arthroscopy. In addition to a desirable gliding surface and a good adaptation of the grafts, fibrillation of the cranial ligament of the medial meniscus was noted and debrided. The recipient horse became sound four months after follow-up surgery with a high level of owner satisfaction. In conclusion allograft transplantation is a promising technique for treating subchondral bone cysts.

      • How long have we been riding the apostles’ horse? : A Hungarian biblical expression and its cultural background

        본 논문은 헝가리 인들이 ‘걸어가다’라는 의미로 자주 사용하는 ‘az apostolok lov?n megy’ (직역:사도들이 말을 타고 가다)라는 헝가리 속담의 문화적 기원을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 유럽의 언어들을 살펴보면 많은 어휘와 관용표현들이 성서로부터 유래되었음을 알 수 있는데, 이는 헝가리어에서도 예외가 아니어서 약 1000 여 가지의 관용표현이 성서에서 유래되었음을 확인하게된다; 이미 1596 년에 출판된 헝가리 최초의 격언집에는 성서에서 유래한 다수의 표현들이 포함되어 있었다. 이러한 표현들은 초기에는 구전되다가 이후에 기록되면서 하나의 표현에 대한 다양한 변형들이 나타나게 되었을 것으로 예측된다. 본 논문에서는 성서에서 유래한 용어들을 그 유형에 따라 분류해보고 어휘 ‘apostol’(사도)과 이 어휘에서 파생된 파생어들을 유럽제 언어들의 유사한 표현들과 비교하며 분석하고자 한다. 이와 같은 비교는 ‘az apostolok lov?n’ 구조에 대한 구체적이고도 철저한 분석을 위한 필수적인 작업이라 사료된다. 이러한 표현을 유럽의 다른 언어들과 비교해보면 지역적 근접성에 따라 유사한 표현들이 사용되고 있음을 알 수 있게 되는데, 이를 통해 우리는 근대 라틴어를 사용하는 지역에서는 ‘사도, 성인, 혹은 수도사들이 말이나 나귀를 타고 여행하다’라는 표현이, 게르만어를 사용하는 지역에서는 헝가리어와 동일한 표현 구조가, 그리고 발칸언어 지역에서는 그리스의 영향으로 ‘apostolk?nt utazik’(사도로서 여행하다) 구조가 사용되고 있다고 일반화할 수 있을 것이다. 이와 같은 유형론적 분석을 통해, 우리는, 체코어와 핀란드어 그리고 헝가리어에서 사용되는 ‘az apostolok lov?n megy’라는 표현이 독일어를 통해 유입되었다는 결론에 이른다. 독자들은 이 논문의 마지막 부분에서 제시하고 있는 분류표를 통해 지금까지 진행해 온 우리의 모든 논의를 한 눈에 확인하게 될 것이다. In this essay, the author tries to shed light on the cultural roots of the Hungarian saying az apostolok lov?n megy ‘to go on foot’ [lit. ‘to ride the apostles’ horse’]. Expressions of biblical origin make up a considerable part of the vocabulary of each European nation (e.g. the number of these idiomatic expressions in Hungarian exceeds 1,000). Since these idioms first spread by word of mouth, and were written down only later, they are known in several variants. Many of the parables of the New Testament can be traced back to pre-biblical times (e.g., in Philo’s and Origenes’s works). The first Hungarian collection of proverbs (1596) already contained sayings that were of biblical origin. After giving a typology of biblical phrases, the author analyses the word apostol and its usage in phraseology, comparing it with biblical texts as well as similar expressions in other languages. All this is needed for the sake of a thorough structural study of az apostolok lov?n and its equivalents. The sayings of the European languages are, on the whole, divided according to the various language families. Peoples speaking Romance languages and sharing a common territory, believe that it is either the apostle, the saint or the monk who rides the horse; whereas, the speakers in the Balkans travel as apostles, because they borrowed the expression from the Greek. On the basis of the data collected, it looks almost certain that the Hungarian expression (first used in 1792) comes from the German. The idiom is of Germanic origin in Czech and Finnish as well. Medieval Latin per pedes apostolorum (lit. ‘on the apostles’ foot’) used all over Europe, has no derivative in any European language. All this can be viewed on a chart at the end of the article.         Service Traffic Engineering: avoiding Link Overloads in Service Chains

        Emerging technologies such as software defined networks(SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) enable flexibilityin operation and a significant reduction of the costly hardware deploymentin networks and improve service agility too. Virtual networkfunctions (VNF) are running as virtual machines on servers,and are organized in chains using service function chaining (SFC). Though many SFC algorithms were introduced, they mostly neglectthe state of the underlying networking layers and infrastructure,considering static costs for the connections among the VNFs. In this paper, we apply a model that considers also the topology andcurrent load information of the IP layer below. We formulate theproblem using an integer linear program (ILP) and propose also aheuristic algorithm with the objective of avoiding link overloads inthe networking layer. Thus, we solve the stated VNF-SFC problemsimilar to the basic traffic engineering (TE) problem in networks. We define different architectures to classify the solutions accordingto the amount of networking layer information applied in VNFSFCsolutions. We analyze the operation of the proposed solutionsand show their benefits and drawbacks by numerical results of acase study.

        Linseed oil supplementation affects fatty acid desaturase 2, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma, and insulin-like growth factor 1 gene expression in turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo)

        Objective: Effects of linseed oil (LO) supplementation on the fat content and fatty acid profile of breast meat, and the expression of three genes in the liver, breast muscle and fat tissues of commercial 154-day-old hybrid male turkeys were investigated. Methods: The animals in the control group were fed a commercially available feed and received no LO supplementation (n = 70), whereas animals in the LO group (n = 70) were fed the same basic diet supplemented with LO (day 15 to 21, 0.5%; day 22 to 112, 1%). The effect of dietary LO supplementation on fatty acid composition of breast muscle was examined by gas chromatography, and the expression of fatty acid desaturase 2 (FADS2), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) genes was analysed by means of quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results: The LO supplementation affected the fatty acid composition of breast muscle. Hepatic FADS2 levels were considerably lower (p<0.001), while adipose tissue expression was higher (p<0.05) in the control compared to the LO group. The PPARγ expression was lower (p<0.05), whereas IGF1 was higher (p<0.05) in the fat of control animals. There were no significant (p>0.05) differences in FADS2, PPARγ, and IGF1 gene expressions of breast muscle; however, omega-6/omega-3 ratio of breast muscle substantially decreased (p<0.001) in the LO group compared to control. Conclusion: Fatty acid composition of breast meat was positively influenced by LO supplementation without deterioration of fattening parameters. Remarkably, increased FADS2 expression in the liver of LO supplemented animals was associated with a significantly decreased omega-6/omega-3 ratio, providing a potentially healthier meat product for human consumption. Increased PPARγ expression in fat tissue of the LO group was not associated with fat content of muscle, whereas a decreased IGF1 expression in fat tissue was associated with a trend of decreasing fat content in muscle of the experimental LO group.         Microvascular flow imaging to differentiate focal hepatic lesions: the spoke-wheel pattern as a specific sign of focal nodular hyperplasia

        Microvascular flow imaging (MVFI) is an advanced Doppler ultrasound technique designed to detect slow-velocity blood flow in small-caliber microvessels. This technique is capable of realtime, highly detailed visualization of tumor vessels without using a contrast agent. MVFI has been recently applied for the characterization of focal liver lesions and has revealed typical vascularity distributions in multiple types thereof. Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) constitutes an important differential diagnosis of malignant liver tumors. In this essay, we provide iconographic documentation of the MVFI appearance of FNH and other common solid liver lesions. Identifying the typical patterns of vascularity, including the spoke-wheel pattern with MVFI, can expedite the diagnosis, spare patients from unnecessary procedures, and save costs.

        Effects of Sisal/Cotton Interwoven Fabric and Jute Fibers Loading on Polylactide Reinforced Biocomposites

        The hybridization effect of sisal/cotton interwoven fabric backed by paper roving with jute woven material isinvestigated in the presence of polylactide (PLA) matrix. The biocomposites (five) were produced through varying different(100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100) proportions of sisal/cotton with jute woven fabrics respectively in the laminates. Afterthe successful reinforcements, mechanical properties were investigated in terms of tensile and flexural tests. Moreover, thewater absorption, thickness swelling, and moisture content tests were also examined for assessing the physical anddimensional stability of developed hybrid composites. The water absorption and thickness swelling tests were carried out inthe presence of water after 2 h and 24 h immersion. The highest mechanical properties were found in case of 100 % sisal/cotton reinforced composites whereas the lowest value was observed in case of 100 % jute fiber. The morphological views ofthe developed materials were also characterized using SEM (Scanning electron microscopy) to observe the surfaces beforeand after the tensile load. The SEM deployed EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray) linear scanning was applied to explore thepresence of different chemicals in the biocomposite systems. The reinforcement effects of different fibers loading incomposite systems were also tested in terms of regression analysis and found that sisal/cotton interwoven fabrics existsignificant influence in the composite systems to increase the mechanical properties.

        Investigation of the Possible Role of the Hippo/YAP1 Pathway in Asthma and Allergy

        Purpose: Several lines of evidence indicate that the Hippo/Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) pathways might play a role in the pathogenesis of asthma. To investigate the possible role of the Hippo/YAP1 pathway in the pathogenesis of asthma or its phenotypes. Methods: The levels of gene expressions of the members of the Hippo/YAP1 were compared. The presence of the proteins of the YAP1 and FRMD6 were analyzed with Western blot in induced sputum of 18 asthmatic subjects and 10 control subjects. Fourteen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the YAP1 gene were genotyped in 522 asthmatic subjects and 711 healthy controls. The results were evaluated with traditional frequentist methods and with Bayesian network-based Bayesian multilevel analysis of relevance (BN-BMLA). Results: The mRNA of all the members of the Hippo/YAP1 pathway could be detected in the induced sputum of both controls and cases. A correlation was found between YAP1 mRNA levels and sputum bronchial epithelial cells (r=0.575, P=0.003). The signal for the FRMD6 protein could be detected in all sputum samples while the YAP1 protein could not be detected in the sputum samples, of the healthy controls and severe asthmatics, but it was detectable in mild asthmatics. The rs2846836 SNP of the YAP1 gene was significantly associated with exercise-induced asthma (odds ratio [OR]=2.1 [1.3-3.4]; P=0.004). The distribution of genotypes of rs11225138 and certain haplotypes of the YAP1 gene showed significant differences between different asthma severity statuses. With BN-BMLA, 2 SNPs, genetic variations in the FRMD6 gene proved to be the most relevant to exercise-induced asthma and allergic rhinitis. These 2 SNPs through allergic rhinitis and exercise-induced asthma were in epistatic interaction with each other. Conclusions: Our results provided additional evidence that the FRMD6/Hippo/YAP1 pathway plays a role in the pathogenesis of asthma. If additional studies can confirm these findings, this pathway can be a potential novel therapeutic target in asthma and other inflammatory airway diseases.

        Electrical peculiarities in GaAs and Si based low dimensional structures

        A brief summary of unusual vertical electrical behaviour obtained in GaAs/InAs/GaAs quantum well and quantum dot structures, Si/Ge/Si and Si/SiGe/Si structures containing nanometer size amorphous thin layers or quantum wells, SiC/Si and Fe2Si/Si structures containing nanocrystals, and porous Si/crystalline Si structures, is presented. The unusual behaviour are connected either with defects (interface, bulk or band tail energy states), or quantum mechanical effects.

        Management of Reproduction on Small, Medium and Large Rabbit Farms: A Review

        One of the main goals of small, medium and large farms is to improve the reproductive performance of rabbit does. Stocks of lower productivity can be improved by crossing with intensive breeds. A better nutritional status of both foetuses and suckling kits has a positive effect on their later productivity. Overfeeding young females before first mating can lead to conditions of fattiness. Using restricted feeding or higher fibre content in the feed and changing it for a higher level ad libitum feeding about one week prior to first mating leads to longer lifespan and higher productive level. Intensive reproductive rhythm creates a negative energy balance in does : they are unable to consume enough feed (energy) for the nutritional requirements of foetus and lactation, and therefore lose most of their fat reserves. Furthermore, primiparous does also expend energy because they are still growing. Under intensive conditions, the 42-d reproductive rhythm (re-mating 11 days after parturition) is recommended. Under extensive conditions, the 18 or 25-d mating interval with 35 to 42-d weaning could be suitable. On small farms, natural mating is favoured; on large farms AI is commonly employed. The main advantage of AI is the all-in, all-out system. Hormonal (PMSG) treatment is used with AI to increase receptivity on d 11. Frequent and high level PMSG use can lead to higher anti-PMSG antibody rates. Lower level (max. 20 IU) and less frequent PMSG injection or non-hormonal alternative methods (short dam-litter separation, changing nursing method or lighting programs) are recommended for this reason.
