        Glycerol and galactose substituted zinc phthalocyanines. Synthesis and photodynamic activity

        Three novel water soluble, non-ionic, zinc phthalocyanines (Pcs) have been synthesized and their spectroscopic and photodynamic properties investigated in aqueous media. One of the three compounds was shown to be significantly less aggregated, when compared to the other two compounds, and this effect was found to be related to both the nature of the substituent, and also the position at which it is attached to the macrocycle. Photodynamic activity and cellular uptake by human adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29) was shown to be linked to the aggregation state of the Pcs in water.

      • Prostate Cancer Incidence in Turkey: An Epidemiological Study

        Background: This study aimed to determine the incidence of prostate cancer in Turkey in a population-based sample, and to determine clinical and pathological characteristics of the cases. Materials and Methods: All newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients were included in this national, multi-centered, prospective and non-interventional epidemiological registry study conducted in 12 cities representing the 12 regions of Turkey from July 2008 to June 2009. The population-based sample comprised 4,150 patients with a recent prostate cancer diagnosis. Results: Age-adjusted prostate cancer incidence rate was 35 cases per 100,000 in Turkey. At the time of diagnosis, median age was 68, median PSA level was 10.0 ng/mL. Digital rectal examination was abnormal in 36.2% of 3,218 tested cases. Most patients had urologic complaints. The main diagnostic method was transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy (87.8%). Gleason score was ${\leq}6$ in 49.1%, 7 in 27.8% and >7 in 20.6% of the cases. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between serum PSA level and Gleason score (p=0.000). The majority of patients (54.4%) had clinical stage T1c. Conclusions: This is the first population-based national data of incidence with the histopathological characteristics of prostate cancer in Turkey. Prostate cancer remains an important public health concern in Turkey with continual increase in the incidence and significant burden on healthcare resources.

        Early results with the Mutaf technique

        Purpose: The objective of the present study was to compare different off-midline techniques in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. Methods: A total of 81 patients were included in this prospective, controlled, randomized study. Patients in group 1 were treated with the Limberg flap, and patients in group 2 were treated with Mutaf technique. Patients were followed up for 9 months postsurgically and assessed at regular intervals. Results: A total of 41 and 40 patients received surgical treatment with Limberg or Mutaf techniques, respectively. The 2 groups were similar in terms of age, gender, body mass index, and Tezel pilonidal sinus classification. Also, the 2 groups were comparable with regard to the frequency of preoperative discharge from the wound site, history of abscess formation, and the resultant antibiotic use. Early results showed similar recurrence rates and surgical-site complications between the 2 groups. Although a lower visual analogue scale score was found in group 2 at postoperative day 1, seroma persistence, time to withdrawal of surgical drains, and wound healing were more prolonged. Conclusion: In this study, Mutaf technique was comparable to Limberg flap in the treatment of pilonidal sinus. Therefore, Mutaf technique may be offered as a viable surgical therapeutic option among off-midline closure approaches.

        Second Line Palliative Endobronchial Radiotherapy with HDR Ir 192 in Recurrent Lung Carcinoma

        Purpose: To observe the efficiency of reirradiation with high dose rate intraluminal brachytherapy in  symptomatic palliation of recurrent  endobronchial tumors. Materials and Methods: Between January 1994 and June 1998, 21 patients diagnosed with recurrent endobronchial tumors following external beam radiotherapy were treated palliatively with high dose rate intraluminal irradiation at Hacettepe University Oncology Institute. A single fraction of 10Gy was prescribed to the specified area in 9 patients and 15Gy to 12. Results: Endobronchial treatment improved the performance and reduced symptomatology in 17 (81%) patients. Ten dyspneic patients (10/14, 71%) recovered clinically with an accompanying radiological downstaging. The median symptomatic palliation was 45 days (range, 0-9 months), and the overall median survival was 5.5 months (range, 4-12 months). The palliative intrabronchial brachytherapy was well tolerated, with the exception of in one patient with a fatal hemorrhage, and another with medically salvaged bronchospasm and intrabronchial edema. Conclusion: Recurrent patients with a history of previous thoracic external beam irradiation can be effectively palliated with high dose rate endobronchial reirradiation if the symptoms are directly related to the endobronchial tumor.

      • High Electron Mobility in [1]Benzothieno[3,2-<i>b</i>][1]benzothiophene-Based Field-Effect Transistors: Toward n-Type BTBTs

        <P>The first example of an n-type [1]benzothieno[3,2-<I>b</I>][1]benzothiophene (BTBT)-based semiconductor, <B>D(Ph</B><SUB><B>F</B></SUB><B>CO)-BTBT</B>, has been realized via a two-step transition-metal-free process without using chromatographic purification. Physicochemical and optoelectronic characterizations of the new semiconductor were performed in detail, and the crystal structure was accessed. The new molecule exhibits a large optical band gap (∼2.9 eV) and highly stabilized (Δ<I>E</I><SUB>LUMO</SUB> = 1.54 eV)/π-delocalized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) mainly comprising the BTBT π-core and in-plane carbonyl units. The effect of out-of-plane twisted (64°) pentafluorophenyl groups on LUMO stabilization is found to be minimal. Polycrystalline <B>D(Ph</B><SUB><B>F</B></SUB><B>CO)-BTBT</B> thin films prepared by physical vapor deposition exhibited large grains (∼2-5 μm sizes) and “layer-by-layer” stacked edge-on oriented molecules with an in-plane herringbone packing (intermolecular distances ∼3.25-3.46 Å) to favor two-dimensional (2D) source-to-drain (S → D) charge transport. The corresponding TC/BG-OFET devices demonstrated high electron mobilities of up to ∼0.6 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/V·s and <I>I</I><SUB>on</SUB>/<I>I</I><SUB>off</SUB> ratios over 10<SUP>7</SUP>−10<SUP>8</SUP>. These results demonstrate that the large band gap BTBT π-core is a promising candidate for high-mobility n-type organic semiconductors and, combination of very large intrinsic charge transport capabilities and optical transparency, may open a new perspective for next-generation unconventional (opto)electronics.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Solution-Processable BODIPY-Based Small Molecules for Semiconducting Microfibers in Organic Thin-Film Transistors

        <P>Electron-deficient pi-conjugated small molecules can function as electron-transporting semiconductors in various optoelectronic applications. Despite their unique structural, optical, and electronic properties, the development of BODIPY-based organic semiconductors has lagged behind that of other pi-deficient units. Here, we report the design and synthesis of two novel solution-proccessable BODIPY-based small molecules (BDY-3T-BDY and BDY-4T-BDY) for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The new semiconductors were fully characterized by H-1/C-13 NMR, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization of a key intermediate reveals crucial structural properties. Solution-sheared top-contact/bottom-gate OTFTs exhibited electron mobilities up to 0.01 cm(2)/V center dot s and current on/off ratios of >10(8). Film microstructural and morphological characterizations indicate the formation of relatively long (similar to 0.1 mm) and micrometer-sized (1-2 mu m) crystalline fibers for BDY-4T-BDY-based films along the shearing direction. Fiber-alignment-induced charge-transport anisotropy (mu?/mu approximate to 10) was observed, and higher mobilities were achieved when the microfibers were aligned along the conduction channel, which allows for efficient long-range charge-transport between source and drain electrodes. These OTFT performances are the highest reported to date for a BODIPY-based molecular semiconductor, and demonstrate that BODIPY is a promising building block for enabling solution-processed, electron-transporting semiconductor films.</P>

      • Triisopropylsilylethynyl-substituted indenofluorenes: carbonyl <i>versus</i> dicyanovinylene functionalization in one-dimensional molecular crystals and solution-processed n-channel OFETs

        <P>The design and synthesis of novel electron-deficient and solution-processable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons offers great opportunities for the development of low-cost and large-area (opto)electronics. Although (trialkylsilyl)ethynyl (R3Si-CC-) has emerged as a very popular unit to solubilize organic semiconductors, it has been applied only to a limited class of materials that are mostly substituted on short molecular axes. Herein, two novel solution-processable indenofluorene-based semiconductors, TIPS-IFDK and TIPS-IFDM, bearing (triisopropylsilyl)ethynyl end units at 2,8-positions (<I>long molecular axis substitution</I>) were synthesized, and their single-crystal structures, optoelectronic properties, solution-sheared thin-film morphologies/microstructures, and n-channel field-effect responses were studied. In accordance with the DFT calculations, the HOMO/LUMO energies of the new compounds are found to be −5.77/−3.65 eV and −5.84/−4.18 eV for TIPS-IFDK and TIPS-IFDM, respectively, reflecting the high electron deficiency of the new π-backbones. Both semiconductors exhibit slightly S-shaped molecular frameworks with highly coplanar IFDK/IFDM π-cores, and they form slipped π-stacked one-dimensional (1-D) columnar motifs in the solid state. However, substantial differences in the degree of π-π interactions and stacking distances (4.04 Å <I>vs.</I> 3.47 Å) were observed between TIPS-IFDK and TIPS-IFDM as a result of carbonyl <I>vs.</I> dicyanovinylene functionalization, which results in a three orders of magnitude variation in the charge carrier mobility of the corresponding thin films. Top-contact/bottom-gate OFETs fabricated <I>via</I> solution-shearing TIPS-IFDM yielded one of the best performances in the (trialkylsilyl)ethynyl literature (<I>μ</I>e = 0.02 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>, <I>I</I>on/<I>I</I>off = 10<SUP>7</SUP>-10<SUP>8</SUP>, and <I>V</I>T ∼ 2 V under ambient atmosphere) for a 1-D polycrystalline semiconductor microstructure. To the best of our knowledge, the molecules presented here are the first examples of n-type semiconductors substituted with (trialkylsilyl)ethynyl groups on their long molecular axes.</P>

        Effect of Preputial Type on Bacterial Colonization and Wound Healing in Boys Undergoing Circumcision

        Purpose: In this study, we evaluated the effect of preputial type on bacterial colonization and wound healing in boys undergoing circumcision. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of 78 boys consecutively admitted to our clinic for circumcision between 2009 and 2011. Preputial status was classified into five types on the basis of preputial retractability. One sterile culture swab was swept circumferentially once around the surface of the glans starting just proximal to the urethral meatus. Three weeks following circumcision, control swabs from the same regions of the same patients were taken and inoculated. Thus, the same patients formed the control group. Patients were evaluated on days 1 and 7 after the operation to assess whether the preputial type affected healing. Results: The mean age of the children was 46.3 months. In our study, the growth rate was 71.8% in pre-circumcision patients, whereas the rate was 10.25% in the post-circumcision group. Types 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 had 100%, 93.8%, 71.4%, 44.4%, and 53.6% colonization, respectively. A significant difference was observed among these types in terms of colonization. The most common agent was Enterococcus species (33%). When postoperative patients were evaluated, all had local swelling and hyperemia on postoperative day 1, whereas there was a significant difference on day 7. Conclusions: There was a significant correlation between preputial type and bacterial colonization, and the preputial type affected post-circumcision wound healing. Practitioners should keep in mind that the healing period will be longer in patients with type 1, 2, and 3 preputium.       • Results of Intravesical Chemo-Hyperthermia in High-risk Non-muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer

        Purpose: To examine the effectiveness of mitomycin-C and chemo-hyperthermia in combination for patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: Between November 2011-September 2013, 43 patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer undergoing adjuvant chemo-hyperthermia in two centers were evaluated retrospectively. Treatment consisted of 6 weekly sessions, followed by 6 sessions. Recurrence and progression rate, recurrence-free interval and side effects were examined. Analyzed factors included age, gender, smoking status, AB0 blood group, body mass index, T stage and grade, concominant CIS assets. The associations between predictors and recurrence were assessed using multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses. Results: A total of 40 patients completed induction therapy. Thirteen (32.5%) were diagnosed with tumor recurrence. Median follow-up was 30 months (range 9-39). Median recurrence-free survival was 23 months (range 6-36). The Kaplan-Meier-estimated recurrence-free rates for the entire group at 12 and 24 months were 82% and 61%. There was no statistically significant difference between patient subgroups. Cox hazard analyses showed that an A blood type (OR=6.23, p=0.031) was an independent predictor of recurrence-free. Adverse effects were seen in 53% of patients and these were frequently grades 1 and 2. Conclusions: Intravesical therapy with combination of mitomycin-C and chemohyperthermia seems to be appropriate in high-risk patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer who cannot tolerate or have contraindications for standard BCG therapy.
