Inhibitory effect of plant essential oils on α-glucosidase

        Zonglin You,Yonglian Li,Kun Zhang,Xi Zheng,Vincent Kam Wai Wong,Wenfeng Liu 한국식품과학회 2022 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.31 No.12

Diabetes mellitus, associated with α-glucosidase, has been considered as a chronic metabolic disorder, seriously affecting human health. Thus, searching natural α-glucosidase inhibitors and investigating their inhibition mechanism are urgently important. In this study, sixty-two essential oils (EOs), derived from aromatic plants, were found to exert different inhibition on α-glucosidase. The further study revealed that the most potent EOs against α-glucosidase were chuan-xiong, fructus cnidii, sacha inchi, aloe, ganoderma lucidum spore and ginger with IC50 values of 3.02, 2.88, 7.37, 5.06, 5.32 and 7.40 μg/mL. Moreover, the inhibitory mechanism and kinetics studies found that chuan-xiong and sacha inchi were reversible and mixed-type inhibitors. Fructus cnidii, aloe, ganoderma lucidum spore and ginger were reversible and uncompetitive-type inhibitors. It is suggested that EOs, being of natural origin, would be promising anti-α-glucosidase agents.

Nonstructural Influence Factors of Dynamic Load Allowance for Concrete Beam Bridges

Chenguang Liu,Zonglin Wang,Qingfei Gao 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.5

Studies show that nonstructural parameters, such as pavement conditions or load patterns, have greater influences on the dynamic load allowance (DLA) of bridges than structural parameters. For pavement roughness effects, the values of DLA caused by roughness profiles are calculated by a self-compiled program. The results showed that the values of DLA are discrete even if they are caused by roughness profiles that belong to the same power spectral density (PSD) grade. The PSD grade method for pavement conditions has limitations when it is used in the analysis of DLA. Statistical analysis was also carried out on these DLA results. The statistical analysis indicated that the values of DLA followed a normal distribution when they were excited by roughness profiles that belong to the same grade. For the influence of vehicle string loads on DLA, an improved optimization approach based on a genetic algorithm for the largest DLA is presented. A new method is used to calculate the fitness value in the genetic algorithm (GA) method, which could substantially reduce calculation time. The new approach is able to obtain the most unfavorable arrangement of the vehicle string and estimate the largest DLA caused by it.

Damage inspection and performance evaluation of Jilin highway double-curved arch concrete bridge in China

Ali Fadhil Naser,Wang Zonglin 국제구조공학회 2011 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.39 No.4

Jilin highway concrete bridge is located in the center of Jilin City, which is positioned in the middle part in Jilin Province in the east north of China. This bridge crosses the Songhua River and connects the north and the south of Jilin City. The main purpose of damages inspection of the bridge components is to ensure the safety of a bridge and to identify any maintenance, repair, or strengthening which that need to be carried out. The damages that occur in reinforced concrete bridges include different types of cracks, scalling and spalling of concrete, corrosion of steel reinforcement, deformation, excessive deflection, and stain. The main objectives of this study are to inspect the appearance of Jilin highway concrete bridge and describe all the damages in the bridge structural members, and to evaluate the structural performance of the bridge structure under dead and live loads. The tests adopted in this study are: (a) the depth of concrete carbonation test, (b) compressive strength of concrete test, (c) corrosion of steel test, (d) static load test, and (e) dynamic load test. According to the damages inspection of the bridge structure appearance, most components of the bridge are in good conditions with the exception arch waves, spandrel arch, deck pavement of new arch bridge, and corbel of simply supported bridge which suffer from serious damages. Load tests results show that the deflection, strain, and cracks development satisfy the requirements of the standards.

Improving Mechanical Properties and Thermal Conductivity of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber via Enhancing Interfacial Interaction Between Rubber and Graphene Oxide/Carbon Nanotubes Hybrid

        Zhenghua Qian,Jianan Song,Zijin Liu,Zonglin Peng 한국고분자학회 2019 Macromolecular Research Vol.27 No.11

To fully utilize the fascinating comprehensive properties of graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), GO was used to promote the dispersion of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CC) in rubber matrix. Additionally, carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (xNBR) was used to enhance the interfacial interaction between the styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and the GO/CC hybrid fillers for the formation of hydrogen bonds between the oxygenated functional groups of GO/CC hybrid fillers and the carboxyl groups of xNBR. Moreover, the interfacial interaction was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and further proved by differential scanning calorimetry. As a result, the mechanical property and thermal conductivity of SBR composites were improved significantly compared with the neat SBR vulcanizate, which were much higher than those of the SBR composites without xNBR. In contrast to adding GO/CNTs directly to the rubber matrix, enhancing the interfacial interaction between GO/CC hybrid fillers and rubber matrix as demonstrated herein is a valuable strategy to prepare rubber composites with remarkable comprehensive properties.

Estimating the State-of-Charge of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using an H-Infinity Observer with Consideration of the Hysteresis Characteristic

Xie, Jiale,Ma, Jiachen,Sun, Yude,Li, Zonglin The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.2

The conventional methods used to evaluate battery state-of-charge (SOC) cannot accommodate the chemistry nonlinearities, measurement inaccuracies and parameter perturbations involved in estimation systems. In this paper, an impedance-based equivalent circuit model has been constructed with respect to a LiFePO4 battery by approximating the electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) with RC circuits. The efficiencies of approximating the EIS with RC networks in different series-parallel forms are first discussed. Additionally, the typical hysteresis characteristic is modeled through an empirical approach. Subsequently, a methodology incorporating an H-infinity observer designated for open-circuit voltage (OCV) observation and a hysteresis model developed for OCV-SOC mapping is proposed. Thereafter, evaluation experiments under FUDS and UDDS test cycles are undertaken with varying temperatures and different current-sense bias. Experimental comparisons, in comparison with the EKF based method, indicate that the proposed SOC estimator is more effective and robust. Moreover, test results on a group of Li-ion batteries, from different manufacturers and of different chemistries, show that the proposed method has high generalization capability for all the three types of Li-ion batteries.

Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis with a Continuous Infusion of Low-Dose Urokinase for Non-Acute Deep Venous Thrombosis of the Lower Extremity

        Binbin Gao,Jingyong Zhang,Xuejun Wu,Zonglin Han,Hua Zhou,Dianning Dong,Xing Jin 대한영상의학회 2011 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.12 No.1

Objective: We wanted to evaluate the feasibility of catheter-directed thrombolysis with a continuous infusion of low-dose urokinase for treating non-acute (less than 14 days) deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremity. Materials and Methods: The clinical data of 110 patients who were treated by catheter-directed thrombolysis with a continuous infusion of low-dose urokinase for lower extremity deep venous thrombosis was analysed. Adjunctive angioplasty or/and stenting was performed for the residual stenosis. Venous recanalization was graded by pre- and posttreatment venography. Follow-up was performed by clinical evaluation and Doppler ultrasound. Results: A total of 112 limbs with deep venous thrombosis with a mean symptom duration of 22.7 days (range: 15-38 days) were treated with a urokinase infusion (mean: 3.5 million IU) for a mean of 196 hours. After thrombolysis, stent placement was performed in 25 iliac vein lesions and percutaneous angioplasty (PTA) alone was done in fi ve iliac veins. Clinically signifi cant recanalization was achieved in 81% (90 of 112) of the treated limbs; complete recanalization was achieved in 28% (31 of 112) and partial recanalization was achieved in 53% (59 of 112). Minor bleeding occurred in 14 (13%) patients, but none of the patients suffered from major bleeding or symptomatic pulmonary embolism. During followup (mean: 15.2 months, range: 3-24 months), the veins were patent in 74 (67%) limbs. Thirty seven limbs (32%) showed progression of the stenosis with luminal narrowing more than 50%, including three with rethrombosis, while one revealed an asymptomatic iliac vein occlusion; 25 limbs (22%) developed mild post-thrombotic syndrome, and none had severe post-thrombotic syndrome. Valvular refl ux occurred in 24 (21%) limbs. Conclusion: Catheter-directed thrombolysis with a continuous infusion of low-dose urokinase combined with adjunctive iliac vein stenting is safe and effective for removal of the clot burden and for restoration of the venous fl ow in patients with non-acute lower extremity deep venous thrombosis.
