The effect of non-homogeneity on the stability of laminated orthotropic conical shells subjected to hydrostatic pressure

Zihni Zerin 국제구조공학회 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.43 No.1

In this study, the stability of laminated homogeneous and non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells with freely supported edges under a uniform hydrostatic pressure is investigated. It is assumed that the composite material is orthotropic and the material properties depend only on the thickness coordinate. The basic relations, the modified Donnell type stability and compatibility equations have been obtained for laminated non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells. Applying Galerkin method to the foregoing equations, the expression for the critical hydrostatic pressure is obtained. The appropriate formulas for the single-layer and laminated, cylindrical and complete conical shells made of homogeneous and non-homogeneous, orthotropic and isotropic materials are found as a special case. Finally, effects of non-homogeneity, number and ordering of layers and variations of shell characteristics on the critical hydrostatic pressure are investigated.

Curvilinear free-edge form effect on stability of perforated laminated composite plates

Zihni Zerin,Muhammed Fatih Başoğlu,Ferruh Turan 국제구조공학회 2017 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.61 No.2

In this study, self-supporting roofing elements especially convenient for large-span structures such as stadium, airport terminal, mall, coliseum, etc. were examined with respect to critical buckling load. These elements were assumed as laminated composite plates and, variation of free-edge forms, cutout types and lamination configurations were used as design parameters. Based on the architectural feature and structural requirements, the effects of curvilinear free-edge form on critical buckling load were focused on in this research. Within this scope, 14 types of lamination configuration were specified according to various orientation angle, number and thickness of plies with a constant value of total plate thickness. Besides that, 6 different types of cutout and 3 different free-edge forms were determined. By combining all these parameters 294 different critical buckling load analyses were performed by using ANSYS Mechanical software based on finite element method. Effects of those parameters on critical buckling load were evaluated referring to the obtained results. According to the results presented here, it may be concluded that lamination conditions have more significant influence on the critical buckling load values than the other parameters. On the other hand, it is perceived that curvilinear free-edge forms explicitly undergo changings depending on lamination conditions. For future work, existence of delamination might be considered and progression of the defect could be investigated by using non-linear analysis.

Apelin Levels In Isolated Coronary Artery Ectasia

        Mehmet Zihni Bilik,İbrahim Kaplan,Abdulkadir Yıldız,Mehmet Ata Akıl,Halit Acet,Murat Yüksel,Nihat Polat,Mesut Aydın,Mustafa Oylumlu,Faruk Ertaș,Hasan Kaya,Sait Alan 대한심장학회 2015 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.45 No.5

Background and Objectives: The etiopathogenesis of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is not known completely. In most of the cases, CAE is associated with atherosclerosis; however, isolated CAE has a nonatherosclerotic mechanism. The association between atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and apelin has been examined in previous studies. However, the role of plasma apelin in isolated coronary artery ectasia has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the relationship between plasma apelin levels and isolated coronary artery ectasia. Subjects and Methods: The study population included a total of 54 patients. Twenty-six patients had isolated CAE (53.6±8.1 years); 28 patients with normal coronary arteries (51.6±8.8 years) and with similar risk factors and demographic characteristics served as the control group. Apelin levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunoassay kit. Results: Apelin level in the CAE group was significantly lower (apelin=0.181±0.159 ng/mL) than that in the control group (apelin=0.646±0.578 ng/mL) (p=0.033). Glucose, creatinine, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: In this study, we showed that patients with isolated CAE have decreased plasma apelin levels compared with the control group. Based on the data, a relationship between plasma apelin and isolated CAE was determined.

The First Study on Bacterial Flora and Biological Control Agent of Anoplus roboris (Sufr., Coleoptera)

Demirbag, Zihni,Sezen, Kazim,Demir, Ismail The Microbiological Society of Korea 2002 The journal of microbiology Vol.40 No.2

The hazelnut leaf holer (Anoplus roboris Sufr,, Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a devastating pest of hazelnut and oak trees. It causes approximately 20-30% economic damage to hazelnut production per year in Turkey. In the present study, in order to fond a more effective and safe biological control agent against A. roboris, we investigated the bacterial flora of the hazelnut leave holer, and tested them for insecticidal effects on it. According to morphological, physiological and biochemical tests bacterial flora were identified as Bacillus circulans (Ar1), Bacillus polymyxa (Ar2), Enterobacter sp. (Ar3) and Bacillus sphaelicus (Ar4). Insecticidal effects of bacterial isolates were performed on adult A. roboris. The highest insecticidal effect determined was 67% by B. sphaericus within eight days. The insecticidal effects of the other isolates (Ar1, Ar2 and Ar3) were determined as 33%, 47% and 47% within the same period, respectively.

Examination of non-homogeneity and lamination scheme effects on deflections and stresses of laminated composite plates

Ferruh Turan,Zihni Zerin,Muhammed Fatih Başoğlu 국제구조공학회 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.57 No.4

In this study, a convenient formulation for the bending of laminated composite plates that hold non-homogeneous properties is examined. The constitutive equations of first order shear deformation plate theory are obtained using Hamilton Principle. The effect of non-homogeneity, lamination schemes and aspect ratio on the deflections and stresses is analysed. It is understood from the study that economical and optimum designs for laminated composite plates can be achieved by changing lamination scheme and by considering non-homogeneity response of composite plate.

The dynamic instability of FG orthotropic conical shells within the SDT

        Abdullah H. Sofiyev,Zihni Zerin,Bilender P. Allahverdiev,David Hui,Ferruh Turan,Hakan Erdem 국제구조공학회 2017 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.25 No.5

The dynamic instability of truncated conical shells subjected to dynamic axial load within first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is examined. The conical shell is made from functionally graded (FG) orthotropic material. In the formulation of problem a dynamic version of Donnell's shell theory is used. The equations are converted to a Mathieu-Hill type differential equation employing Galerkin’s method. The boundaries of main instability zones are found applying the method proposed by Bolotin. To verify these results, the results of other studies in the literature were compared. The influences of material gradient, orthotropy, as well as changing the geometric dimensions on the borders of the main areas of the instability are investigated.

A Novel cry2Ab Gene from the Indigenous Isolate Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki

        ( Sevim Ali ),( Emine Eryuzlu1 ),( Zihni Demirba ),( Smail Demir ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2012 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.22 No.1

A novel cry2Ab gene was cloned and sequenced from the indigenous isolate of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki. This gene was designated as cry2Ab25 and its sequence revealed an open reading frame of 1,902 bp encoding a 633 aa protein with calculated molecular mass of 70 kDa and pI value of 8.98. The amino acid sequence of the Cry2Ab25 protein was compared with previously known Cry2Ab toxins, and the phylogenetic relationships among them were determined. The deduced amino acid sequence of the Cry2Ab25 protein showed 99% homology to the known Cry2Ab proteins, except for Cry2Ab10 and Cry2Ab12 with 97% homology, and a variation in one amino acid residue in comparison with all known Cry2Ab proteins. The cry2Ab25 gene was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) cells. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed that the Cry2Ab25 protein is about 70 kDa. The toxin expressed in BL21(DE3) exhibited high toxicity against Malacosoma neustria and Rhagoletis cerasi with 73% and 75% mortality after 5 days of treatment, respectively.

Development of Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) as a mycoinsecticide to control green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae) and investigation of its biocontrol potential

        Biryol Seda,Demirbağ Zihni,Erdoğan Pervin,DEMIR, ISMAIL 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.1

Long-term and intensive use of synthetic insecticides to control the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Homo ptera: Aphididae) in agricultural production in the world has resulted in pest resistance and environmental pollution. The aim of the study was to develop an environmentally-friendly and effective mycoinsecticide from a local fungal isolate against M. persicae. According to the results of the screening experiments using 15 isolates (6 × Metarhizium, 5 × Beauveria, 2 × Isaria, 2 × Lecanicillium) at 1 × 10 7 conidia ml − 1 concentrations and the dose–response experiments at 1 × 10 5 –1 × 10 9 conidia ml − 1 concentrations against M. persicae nymphs, Beauveria bassiana (KTU-24) was identified as the most promising isolate. The strain KTU-24 is also had tolerance to ecological conditions such as temperature, and UV-B. KTU-24 with advantageous and superior properties was used to develop a test mycoinsecticide. Mass production of spores by KTU-24 was conducted out by liquid-state fermentation using liquid medium. Spores harvested from the sporulated biomass were used to develop an oilbased mycoinsecticide, and the product was designated as AFIDISIDAL-OD Bbas-TR61. The product had lethal effect on M. persicae nymphs at a concentration of 1 × 10 8 conidia ml − 1 in leaf-disc (82.5%) and pot (84.33%) experiments in a climate chamber. The oil-based mycoinsecticide developed in this study could be profitable when used in aphid-IPM prgrams by reducing crop loss and synthetic pesticides use.
