      • Revision of the spider genus Taira (Araneae, Amaurobiidae, Amaurobiinae)

        The cribellate amaurobiid genus Taira, which is suggested to be most similar to the genus Amaurobius and someother related genera, is revised based on genital characters. Eight species, one from Japan and seven from China, areincluded. Five new species from China are described: T. cangshan, T. concava, T. latilabiata, T. obtusa, and T. sulciformis.Titanoeca decorata Yin & Bao 2001 is newly transferred to this genus and its male is described for the first time. Tairalunaris Wang & Ran 2004 is newly synonymized with T. liboensis Zhu, Chen & Zhang 2004.

        Simultaneous Information and Power Transfer for Multi-antenna Primary-Secondary Cooperation in Cognitive Radio Networks

        In this paper, cognitive radio and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) are effectively combined to design a spectrum-efficient and energy-efficient transmission paradigm. Specifically, a novel SWIPT-based primary-secondary cooperation model is proposed to increase the transmission rate of energy/spectrum constrained users. In the proposed model, a multi-antenna secondary user conducts simultaneous energy harvesting and information forwarding by means of power splitting (PS), and tries to maximize its own transmission rate under the premise of successfully assisting the data delivery of the primary user. After the problem formulation, joint power splitting and beamforming optimization algorithms for decode-and-forward and amplify-and-forward modes are presented, in which we obtain the optimal PS factor and beamforming vectors using a golden search method and dual methods. Simulation results show that the proposed SWIPTbased primary-secondary cooperation schemes can obtain a much higher level of performance than that of non-SWIPT cooperation and non-cooperation schemes.

        Aero-engine Gas Path Performance Degradation Assessment Based on a Multi-objective Optimized Discrete Feddback Network

        In order to solve the problem of neural network algorithm for aero-engine’s gas path performance evaluation under high-dimensional evaluation index with non-equal weights, the trend analysis method and fault fingerprints are used to mine engine’s gas path performance characteristic parameters. A comprehensive weighting method based on game theory is proposed to optimize the weight value of each gas path performance characteristic parameter. A discrete feedback neural network with single-layer and binary output is established. The original gas path performance evaluation index is equivalently expanded according to the weight ratio, and the gas path state evaluation indexes with different weights are mapped into higher-dimensional equivalent evaluation indexes with equal weights. The network attractor is designed according to the engine gas path performance evaluation levels, and the design of discrete feedback neural network weights is transformed into multi-objective programming problem, and a particle swarm optimization algorithm with adaptive inertia weight is used to improve the efficiency and global search ability of particle swarm optimization. The experimental results shows that the proposed model and algorithm can provide a scientific and reasonable machine learning method for the evaluation of high-dimensional evaluation index with non-equal weights.

        Production of Bioethanol from Sugarcane Bagasse Using NH4OH-H2O2 Pretreatment and Simultaneous Saccharification and Co-fermentation

        In this study, we investigated the production of bioethanol from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) using an NH4OH-H2O2 pretreatment and simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SScF). Response surface methodology and a 23 Box-Behnken design were used to evaluate the effect of different liquid mixture concentrations, liquid-tosolid ratios (LSRs) and pretreatment temperatures on the production of ethanol. The liquid mixture concentration and LSR significantly influenced the fermentation efficiency. Based on ridge max analysis, the following pretreatment conditions resulted in a fermentation efficiency of 95.79 ±0.01%: liquid mixture concentration 53%, LSR 28, and a temperature of 63°C. A morphological analysis performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical characterization revealed that these pretreatment conditions were effective in disrupting the sugarcane fibers and removing lignin. Ethanol fermentation with the pretreated SCB using SScF in yeast SHY 07-1 resulted in an ethanol concentration of 14.65 ± 0.17 g/L, an ethanol yield of 0.48± 0.01 g/g, and an ethanol productivity of 0.12 ± 0.01 g/(L/h), which represents increases of 106.02, 89.98, and 107.02%, respectively, over the values obtained from SScF with untreated SCB.         Adenoviral Vector Mediates High Expression Levels of Human Lactoferrin in the Milk of Rabbits

        The limitations in current technology for generating transgenic animals, such as the time and the expense, hampered its extensive use in recombinant protein production for therapeutic purpose. In this report, we present a simple and less expensive alternative by directly infusing a recombinant adenovirus vector carrying human lactoferrin cDNA into rabbit mammary glands. The milk serum was collected from the infected mammary gland 48 h post-infection and subjected to a 10% SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. An 80-kDa protein was visualized after viral vector infection. With this method, we obtained a high level of expressed human lactoferrin of up to 2.3 mg/ml in the milk. Taken together, the method is useful for the transient high-level expression recombinant proteins, and the approach established here is probably one of the most economical and efficient ways for large-scale production of recombinant proteins of biopharmaceutical interest.

        Distribution and Abundance of Octocoral (Octocorallia, Alcyonacea) Communities at Three Southern Islands of Singapore

        Studies concerning subtidal octocoral species from Singapore reefs are few. This study documents the diversity and abundance of octocoral communities from fringing reefs at Singapore’s Southern Islands, namely, Pulau Semakau, P. Hantu and Kusu Island. Belt transects of 20 m (× 5) were employed to survey the octocoral communities at these reef sites. Morphology and sclerites of a number of collected octocoral samples were compared with paratypes obtained from the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, National University of Singapore, for species identification. A total of 16 morphotypes, belonging to five octocoral genera, including Cladiella, Lobophytum, Nephthea, Sarcophyton and Sinularia, were identified in this study. Statistical analysis revealed octocoral abundance and diversity at Kusu Island reefs were higher than those around P. Hantu and P. Semakau. Conversely, octocoral community structures encountered along P. Semakau and Kusu Island were more similar than those of P. Hantu. The preliminary data presented in this study could serve as the baseline data for long term biomonitoring programs in assessing the state of coral reefs in Singapore.

        Effects of Supplementary Composts on Microbial Communities and Rice Productivity in Cold Water Paddy Fields

        Cold water paddy field soils are relatively unproductive, but can be ameliorated by supplementing with inorganic fertilizer from animal waste-based composts. The yield of two rice cultivars was significantly raised by providing either chicken manure or cow dung-based compost. The application of these composts raised the soil pH as well as both the total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen content, which improved the soil’s fertility and raised its nitrification potential. The composts had a measurable effect on the abundance of nitrogencycling- related soil microbes, as measured by estimating the copy number of various bacterial and archaeal genes using quantitative real-time PCR. The abundance of ammonia oxidizing archaea and bacteria was markedly encouraged by the application of chicken manure-based compost. Supplementation with the composts helped promote the availability of soil nitrogen in the cold water paddy field, thereby improving the soil’s productivity and increasing the yield of the rice crop.

        Self-assembly and Mechanism of L-Alanine-based Dihydrazide Derivative as Excellent Gelator of Organic Solvents

        A new organogelator, L-Alanine dihydrazide derivative can self-assemble in various organic solvents and turned them into thermally reversible physical supramolecular organogels at extremely low concentrations (< 2 wt %). The gel-sol phase transition temperatures ($T_{GS}$) were determined as a function of gelator concentration and the corresponding enthalpies (${\Delta}H_g$) were extracted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements revealed that the interspaces of fiber-like network structures were diminished with the increasing of the LMOG concentration. FT-IR spectroscopy studies revealed that hydrogen-bonding and hydrophobic interaction were the driving forces for the formation of the gels. Based on the data of XRD and molecular modeling, the possible packing modes for the formation of organogelator aggregates were proposed.

        The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of ammonium polyphosphate/ aluminium hydroxide/ mica during thermal reaction

        The phase and microstructure evolution of ammonium polyphosphate/ aluminium hydroxide/ mica compounds (AAM) duringthermal reaction are investigated. At 300 oC, AAM residues exhibit porous structure due to gas evolution from the thermaldecomposition of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and aluminium hydroxide, but mica does not react with them, and theflexural strength of specimens can reach 11.56 MPa. The thermal decomposition products of APP react with AlOOH toNH4AlP2O7, which can improve the flexural strength during 300 ~ 400 oC. The reactivity of mica is increased by eliminatinghydroxyl at temperature up to 600 oC, and the flexural strength of AAM residues is improved furtherly by the chemicallyinteractions between active mica and phosphates during 600 ~ 1000 oC. And specifically at 1000 oC, the AAM residues exhibitrelatively high flexural strength, which can reach 26.85 MPa and reactions between mica and KAlP2O7 could generateKAlSi3O8 and 3Al2O3·2SiO2. AAM with high flexural strength from low to high temperatures is expected to be a kind ofexcellent inorganic additive of ceramifiable polymer with wide temperature range for using.
