      • Common genetic determinants of breast-cancer risk in East Asian women: a collaborative study of 23 637 breast cancer cases and 25 579 controls

        <P>In a consortium including 23 637 breast cancer patients and 25 579 controls of East Asian ancestry, we investigated 70 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 67 independent breast cancer susceptibility loci recently identified by genome-wide association studies (GWASs) conducted primarily in European-ancestry populations. SNPs in 31 loci showed an association with breast cancer risk at <I>P</I> < 0.05 in a direction consistent with that reported previously. Twenty-one of them remained statistically significant after adjusting for multiple comparisons with the Bonferroni-corrected significance level of <0.0015. Eight of the 70 SNPs showed a significantly different association with breast cancer risk by estrogen receptor (ER) status at <I>P</I> < 0.05. With the exception of rs2046210 at 6q25.1, the seven other SNPs showed a stronger association with ER-positive than ER-negative cancer. This study replicated all five genetic risk variants initially identified in Asians and provided evidence for associations of breast cancer risk in the East Asian population with nearly half of the genetic risk variants initially reported in GWASs conducted in European descendants. Taken together, these common genetic risk variants explain ∼10% of excess familial risk of breast cancer in Asian populations.</P>

        Mapping the Most Massive Overdensities through Hydrogen (MAMMOTH). II. Discovery of the Extremely Massive Overdensity BOSS1441 at<i>z</i>= 2.32

        <P>Cosmological simulations suggest a strong correlation between high optical-depth Lya absorbers, which arise from the intergalactic medium, and 3D mass overdensities on scales of 10-30 h(-1) comoving Mpc. By examining the absorption spectra of similar to 80,000 QSO sight lines over a volume of 0.1 Gpc(3) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), we have identified an extreme overdensity, BOSS1441, which contains a rare group of strong Lya absorbers at z = 2.32 +/- 0.02. This absorber group is associated with six QSOs at the same redshift on a 30 comoving Mpc scale. Using Mayall/MOSAIC narrowband and broadband imaging, we detect Lya emitters (LAEs) down to 0.7 x L-Ly alpha ' * a and reveal a large-scale structure of LAEs in this field. Our follow-up LBT observations have spectroscopically confirmed 20 galaxies in the density peak. We show that BOSS1441 has an LAE overdensity of 10.8 +/- 2.6 on a 15 comoving Mpc scale, which could collapse to a massive cluster with M greater than or similar to 10(15) M-circle dot at z similar to 0. This overdensity is among the most massive large-scale structures at z similar to 2 discovered to date.</P>

        Discovery of an Enormous Ly<i>α</i>Nebula in a Massive Galaxy Overdensity at<i>z</i>= 2.3

        <P>Enormous Ly alpha nebulae (ELANe), unique tracers of galaxy density peaks, are predicted to lie at the nodes and intersections of cosmic filamentary structures. Previous successful searches for ELANe have focused on wide-field narrowband surveys or have targeted known sources such as ultraluminous quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) or radio galaxies. Utilizing groups of coherently strong Ly alpha absorptions, we have developed a new method to identify high-redshift galaxy overdensities and have identified an extremely massive overdensity, BOSS1441, at z = 2-3. In its density peak, we discover an ELAN that is associated with a relatively faint continuum. To date, this object has the highest diffuse Ly alpha nebular luminosity of L-nebula = 5.1 +/- 0.1 x 10(44) erg s(-1). Above the 2 sigma surface brightness limit of SBLy alpha = 4.8 x 10(-18) erg s(-1) cm(-2) arcsec(-2), this nebula has an end-to-end spatial extent of 442 kpc. This radio-quiet source also has extended C IV lambda 1549 and He II lambda 1640 emission on greater than or similar to 30 kpc scales. Note that the Ly alpha, He II, and C IV emissions all have double-peaked line profiles. Each velocity component has an FWHM of approximate to 700-1000 km s(-1). We argue that this Lya nebula could be powered by shocks due to an active galactic nucleus-driven outflow or photoionization by a strongly obscured source.</P>

        Surgical Outcomes of Symptomatic Intramedullary Spinal Cord Cavernous Malformations: Analysis of Consecutive Cases in a Single Center

        Objective: Intramedullary spinal cavernous malformations (ISCMs) are rare vascular lesions of the spinal cord with unclear natural history and controversy over treatment. This study aimed to report a series of symptomatic ISCMs underwent microsurgical management to illustrate the natural history, clinical presentation, and surgical outcomes and to evaluate factors associated with hemorrhage events and neurological prognosis. Methods: This single-center retrospective study included 29 consecutive patients with whose demographic, symptomology, imaging, neurological, and surgical data were collected. The risk for hemorrhage events and factors affecting surgical outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. Results: There were 12 female (41.4%) and 17 male patients (58.6%), with an average age of 45.2 years (range, 17–69 years). The mean size of the lesion was 9.7 mm (range, 3–20 mm). Most patients had a bowel or/and bladder dysfunction symptom (n = 11, 37.9%), followed by sensory deficits (n = 5, 17.2%), gait disturbance (n = 5, 17.2%), pain (n = 4, 13.8%), and weakness (n = 4, 13.8%), most (n = 15, 51.7%) with a chronic onset. All patients received total resection without rehemorrhages after surgical resection in follow-up. Sixty-five point five percent patients (n = 19) improved, 13.8% (n = 4) remained stable, 20.7% (n = 6) got worsen. The overall annual hemorrhage risk was 2.1% per patient-year. A total of 27 hemorrhages occurred in the 18 patients, of which rehemorrhage rate increased to 50.0% (n = 9) with a previous history of hemorrhage. Patients with smaller lesion sizes were more likely to have hemorrhage or rehemorrhage events (p = 0.008). Recurrent hemorrhage of the lesions was a risk factor for neurological outcomes (p = 0.016). Conclusion: The risk of rehemorrhage was significantly increased in symptomatic ISCM patients with a previous history of hemorrhage. Rehemorrhage was a risk factor for neurological outcomes. Patients can benefit from microsurgical treatment to avoid rehemorrhage and further neurological deterioration.

        중국 해상법상 송하인(托運人)의 법적 지위에 관한 검토 - FOB 매매조건을 중심으로 -

        In China, many arguments have been held upon the concept of shipper, defined in China Maritime Code (CMC). The reason is that there are two types of shippers according to the definition of a shipper, one is which contracts with a carrier referred to as "contract shipper" in this article, the other is which actually delivers the cargoes to a carrier referred to as "actual shipper" in this article; however, the other provisions about the shipper's rights and obligations cannot distinguish these two types of shippers. This matter appears in the FOB contract. The suggestion mostly proposed by many experts for amending the above-mentioned matter of shippers is that it must be indicated each provision of the shipper's rights and obligations is applied to the corresponding shipper. In this paper, we analyzed the reasonability of this suggestion and proposed our opinions. In my opinion, the person who actually delivers the cargo to a carrier has the rights to demand the carrier issuing himself the bill of lading and the other provisions for the shipper only are applied to the person who contract with the carrier. In the other words, the contract shipper should be removed from the definition of the shipper and the other remains. On the basis of the above, the rights, obligations and liabilities of the amended shippers are expounded in detail.

        Biocatalysis and Fermentation Technology : Purification and Characterization of a Thermostable Xylanase from Paenibacillus sp. NF1 and its Application in Xylooligosaccharides Production

        High levels of extracellular xylanase activity (211.79 IU/mg) produced by Paenibacillus sp. NF1 were detected when it was submerged-cultured. After three consecutive purification steps using Octyl-Sepharose, Sephadex G75, and Q-Sepharose columns, a thermostable xylanase (XynNF) was purified to homogeneity and showed a molecular mass of 37 kDa according to SDS-PAGE. The specific activity of the purified XynNF was up to 3,081.05 IU/mg with a 14.55-fold purification. The activity of XynNF was stimulated by Ca2+, Ba2+, DTT, and β-mercaptoethanol, but was inhibited by Fe3+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, SDS, and EDTA. The purified XynNF displayed a greater affinity for oat spelt xylan with the maximal enzymatic activity at 60°C and pH 6.0. XynNF, which was shown to be cellulose-free, with high stability at high temperature (70°C-80°C) and low pH range (pH 4.0-7.0), is potentially valuable for various industrial applications. The enzyme hydrolyzed oat spelt xylan to yield mainly xylooligosaccharides (95.8%) of 2-4 degree of polymerization (DP2-4). Moreover, the majority of the xylooligosacharides (DP2- 4) products was xylobiose (61.5%). The thermostable xylanase (XynNF) thus seems potentially usefull in the production of xylooligosaccharides.

        Investigation of Eco-friendly Dyeing of Para-aramid Using Supercritical CO2

        In order to solve the problems of dyeing difficulty and serious pollution of traditional water-based dyeing of paraaramid,supercritical CO2 fluid was employed as a dyeing solvent to dye para-aramid yarn (temperatures 80-120 ℃, pressures16-24 MPa, dyeing time 15-90 min, and dye concentration 1 %-7 % o.m.f.). The K/S values reached 2.07 and 1.91 at 120 ℃,24 MPa, 60 min, 5 % o.m.f., and a CO2 flow of 20 g/min with C. I. Disperse Red 54 and C. I. Disperse Blue 79, respectively. The results proved that para-aramid yarn could be dyed in supercritical CO2 fluid. Moreover, the thermal and mechanicalproperties of dyed para-aramid yarns in supercritical CO2 showed a slightly increasing trend. The washing, rubbing, and thelight color fastness of the dyed samples were rated above 4-5, and the color fastness durability of the dyed para-aramid wasalso presented good.

      • The NAD(P)H: Quinine Oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) Gene 609 C>T Polymorphism is Associated with Gastric Cancer Risk: Evidence from a Case-control Study and a Meta-analysis

        The association between the NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) gene C609T polymorphism (rs1800566) and gastric cancer has been widely evaluated, but a definitive answer is so far lacking. We first conducted a case-control study to assess this association in a large Han Chinese population, and then performed a meta-analysis to further address this issue. Although our case-control association study indicated no significant difference in the genotype and allele distributions of C609T polymorphism between gastric cancer patients and controls, in the meta analysis involving 4,000 subjects, comparison of alleles 609T and 609C indicated a significantly increased risk (46%) for gastric cancer (95% confidence interval (95%CI) for odds ratio (OR)=1.20-1.79) in individuals with the T allele. The tendency was similar to the homozygote (OR=1.81, 95%CI: 1.16-2.84), dominant models (OR=1.41, 95%CI: 1.12-1.79), as well as recessive model (OR=1.58, 95%CI: 1.06-2.35). Stratified analysis by study design demonstrated stronger associations in population-based than in hospital-based studies. And ethnicity-based analysis demonstrated a significant association in Asians. We conclude that the NQO1 gene C609T polymorphism increases the risk for gastric cancer, especially in Asian populations.

      • Two-dimensional thermographic phosphor thermometry in a cryogenic environment

        <P>In this study, lifetime-based thermographic phosphor thermometry was developed for 2D temperature measurements in a cryogenic temperature environment. A chamber was set up to provide such an environment with temperatures of 300–110 K and accuracy of  ±3.5 K. Mg<SUB>4</SUB>FGeO<SUB>6</SUB>:Mn was used as a sensor material, which was excited by a pulsed UV LED. A high-speed camera with a frequency of 8000 Hz was used for the phosphor thermometry. Calibration was performed at temperatures ranging from 110 to 290 K. The calibration results clearly show variation in the lifetime at different temperatures, and the calibration error is within 1.7%. This measurement is demonstrated in a 2D temperature measurement of an aluminum plate with a heater for both steady and unsteady heat transfer conditions. The measurement results were compared with thermocouple measurements to validate the method.</P>

      • Diagnostic Significance of Combined Detection of Epstein-Barr Virus Antibodies, VCA/IgA, EA/IgA, Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

        The objective of this study was to investigate the diagnostic significance of EBV antibody combined detection for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in a high incidence region of southern China. Two hundred and eleven untreated NPC patients, 203 non-NPC ENT patients, and 210 healthy controls were recruited for the study. The titers of VCA/IgA and EA/IgA were assessed by immunoenzyme assay, and the levels of Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of VCA/IgA, EA/IgA, Rta/IgG and EBNA1/IgA demonstrated no association with gender or age (p>0.05). The receiver operating characteristic curve and the area under the curve were used to evaluate the diagnostic value. The sensitivity of VCA/IgA (98.1%) and the specificity of EA/IgA (98.5%) were the highest. When a logistic regression model was used to combine the results from multiple antibodies to increase the accuracy, the combination of VCA/IgA+Rta/IgG, whose area under the curve was 0.99, had the highest diagnostic efficiency, and its sensitivity, specificity and Youden index were 94.8%, 98.0% and 0.93 respectively. The data suggest that the combination of VCA/IgA+Rta/IgG may be most suitable for NPC serodiagnosis.
