Electrochemical machining (ECM) of holes on the surface of nickel-based alloy as tool electrode was investigated to analyze the effect of electric field distribution on hole forming process in ECM of small holes. Based on the experimental and simulation results, it was shown that the law of electric field distribution in electrochemical machining gap with tubular electrode and the effect of gap electric field on dimension of hole were illustrated. In addition, the influences of electrolyte pressure on electric field distribution and stability of machining was studied to conclude the effective factors of machining stability in ECM of holes.

In this paper, we investigated the droplet splitting using different spacers in the air. The droplets were manipulated by the EWOD force and the level set method was used for our numerical implementation. The results show that the property of spacer has the effect on the droplet splitting. Specifically, we showed that the re-merging occurred when split daughter droplets pass the sub-channels for the short spacer and unequal droplet splitting can be achieved for the off-centered obstacle. In the study of the thickness, the thicker spacer made the splitting process unstable. Furthermore, we found that the triangle spacer was optical for the separation from the consideration of pressure. Our task can provide some help for the design of the spacer size in the future.

This study investigates the effect of rake angle on cutting performance during machining of stone-plastic composite material with diamond cutters. To that end, an orthogonal cutting experiment was designed, in which stone-plastic composite material was planed by a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) cutter to produce chips. The features studied include cutting forces, cutting heat, chip formation and cutting quality. The conclusions are as follows: Firstly, increased rake angle causes frictional force and resulting force to decrease, promoting an increase in normal force. Secondly, during planing, cutting heat is primarily distributed in the chips, with less retained in the cutting edge, and the least retained in the machined surface. The temperatures of both cutting edge and chip decline with an increase in rake angle. Thirdly, as rake angle increases, chip morphology changes from segmental to curved and then to particle chips, with chip-breaking lengths first increasing and then decreasing. Finally, an increased rake angle leads a more stable cutting process and improved cutting quality. Therefore, with the precondition of blade strength, a diamond cutter with a larger rake angle can be used to machine stone-plastic composite to improve production quality by forming a smoother machined surface.

In generally, the resolution of reconstructed three-dimensional images can be seriously degraded by undesired occlusions in the integral imaging system, because the undesired information of the occlusion overlap the three-dimensional images to be reconstructed. To solve the problem of the undesired occlusion, we present an exemplar-based image restoration method in integral imaging system. In the proposed method, a minimum spanning tree-based stereo matching method is used to remove the region of undesired occlusions in each elemental image. After that, the removed occlusion region of each elemental images are re-established by using the exemplar-based image restoration method. For further improve the performance of the image restoration, the structure tensor is used to solve the filling error cause by discontinuous structures. Finally, the resolution enhanced three-dimensional images are reconstructed by using the restored elemental images. The preliminary experiments are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

A semi-submersible offshore platform always operates under complex weather conditions, especially wind and waves. It is vital to analyze the structural dynamic responses of the platform in short-term sea states under the combined wind and wave loads, which touches upon three following work. Firstly, a derived relationship between wind and waves reveals a correlation of wind velocity and significant wave height. Then, an Improved Mixture Simulation (IMS) method is proposed to simulate the time series of wind/waves accurately and efficiently. Thus, a wind-wave scatter diagram is expanded from the traditional wave scatter diagram. Finally, the time series of wind/wave pressures on the platform in the shortterm sea states are converted by Workbench-AQWA. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed numerical methods are validated to be applicable for wind and wave simulations in structural analyses. The structural dynamic responses of the platform members increase with the wind and wave strength. In the up-wind and wave state, the stresses on the deck, the connections between deck and columns, and the connection between columns and pontoons are relatively larger under the vertical bending moment. These numerical methods and results are wished to provide some references for structural design and health monitoring of several offshore platforms.

Metal oxide reinforced composite, as a new kind of engineering material, was an essential research topic to industry. Magnesium oxide as particle-reinforced phase, were mixed with wood fiber-matrix to enhance the mechanical properties of composite. However, the research on the surface quality of this composite is still desirable for expanding its application. In order to investigate the surface integrity of this kind particle-reinforced wood-based composite, spiral up-milling experiments were performed with different cutting depth and cutting speed. The effect of cutting speed and cutting depth on surface integrity was investigated. According to the calculation results of black pixels proportion of binary image of machined surface, surface defects were greatly affected by cutting depth rather than cutting speed. Defects, such as pile-up and debonding of particles, were usually observed under 0.5 mm cutting depth, meanwhile, extensive damage of flacking and fracture of wood fiber-matrix were usually observed under 1.5 mm cutting depth. In all, the machined surface formation mechanism of this composite can be different by changing cutting depth.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the bolted end-plate beam to column (BEBC) joints with different strengthening strategies under fire through a parametric study by using a validated computational model. The current studies are mainly more focused on the mechanical behavior of a certain kind of reinforced or unreinforced BEBC joints at either room or fire alone, limiting investigations are available for a comprehensive stiffening strategy study of the BEBC joints under fire. Therefore, there is a need in improving the performance of BEBC joints with different stiffening strategies, the fire resistance comparison of these BEBC joints with different strengthening strategies under fire is of great interest. The analyses of the fire resistance behavior of the stiffened or unstiffened BEBC joints under fire were conducted by using a developed model that was established and validated by using the existing test results. A parametric study was conducted for BEBC joints with web stiffeners, end-plate stiffeners and web and end-plate stiffeners together under fire using the validated computational model. In order to better compare the fire resistance of BEBC joints with different strengthening strategies under a fire, 24 finite element models were established by considering different strengthening strategies and end-plate thicknesses. The results on different strengthening strategies and the end-plate thicknesses revealed the major impact of web stiffeners and end-plate web stiffener together, and the sensitivities of end-plate thickness for unreinforced BEBC joints. For the fire resistance of unreinforced and stiffened BEBC joints, the findings herein can provide a valuable reference for potential design recommendations.
