      • Feature fusion via hierarchical supervised local CCA for diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder

        <P>Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is critical for timely medical intervention, for improving patient quality of life, and for reducing the financial burden borne by the society. A key issue in neuroimaging-based ASD diagnosis is the identification of discriminating features and then fusing them to produce accurate diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for fusing complementary and discriminating features from different imaging modalities. Specifically, we integrate the Fisher discriminant criterion and local correlation information into the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) framework, giving a new feature fusion method, called Supervised Local CCA (SL-CCA), which caters specifically to local and global multimodal features. To alleviate the neighborhood selection problem associated with SL-CCA, we further propose a hierarchical SL-CCA (HSL-CCA), by performing SL-CCA with the gradually varying neighborhood sizes. Extensive experiments on the multimodal ABIDE database show that the proposed method achieves superior performance. In addition, based on feature weight analysis, we found that only a few specific brain regions play active roles in ASD diagnosis. These brain regions include the putamen, precuneus, and orbitofrontal cortex, which are highly associated with human emotional modulation and memory formation. These finding are consistent with the behavioral phenotype of ASD.</P>

        On Zhu Xi’s Distinction between Heavenly Principle and Human Desire

        朱熹的理欲之辨,多爲現代人所詬病,輕者視之爲禁欲主義,重者斥之爲“以理殺人”。應該說,以現代語言重新解讀古代思想,難免會出現一些偏差,因爲古今不同的話語系統預設了不同的自明前提,如果不對雙方的話語系統及其自明前提保持足夠的淸醒和自覺,誤讀和曲解將是必然的。事實上,這種誤讀和曲解充斥在朱熹理欲之辨的各個層次。如果說對人欲、人心、私利的誤解已經開始引起了人們的初步關注,盡管這種關注依然沒能擺脫現代語境的束縛,那麼,對天理和聖人的誤解則至今還未受到應有的反思,如馮友蘭、牟宗三等人的有關解釋一直在廣泛流傳,它們集中體現了現代語境對古代理念的粗暴扭曲。這些誤解不但遮蔽了理欲之辨的深層用意,同時也遮蔽了整個朱熹理學的深刻內涵。本文試圖從古今不同語境及其自明前提的考察入手,對朱熹的理欲之辨進行一番淸理,爲重新揭示朱熹理學的深層秘密探索一種可能的途徑。 Zhu Xi’s distinction between heavenly principle and human desire (理欲之辨) has been more often than not criticized by modern men, either as asceticism or as “demolishing humans with heavenly principles” (以理殺人). It should be acknowledged that errors are bound to occur should one employ modern languages to re-interpret ancient thoughts. For one thing, the discourse system internal to ancient times presupposed a self-evident premise that is different from that in modern times, a difference which, if ignored, will surely lead us to misinterpretations and misunderstandings. As a matter of fact, such misinterpretations and misunderstandings can be seen at the various levels of a modern reading of Zhu Xi’s distinction between principle and desire. In recent years, misunderstandings on such concepts as human desire (人欲), human mind (人心), or partial profit (私利) have received certain attention among scholars, an attention that has far to go yet in order to free itself from the shackles of modern contexts. By way of contrast, misunderstandings of other concepts, such as heavenly principle (天理) and the sage (聖人), have not received due reflection so far. Misinterpretations offered by such scholars as Feng Youlan (馮友蘭) and Mou Zongsan (牟宗三) are still popular among modern students of Zhu Xi, thus showing in a nutshell a coarse distortion of ancient ideas in modern contexts. These misunderstandings have not only hidden from view the profound meanings of Zhu Xi’s arguments, but also the intension of Zhu Xi’s theory of principle as a whole. This article attempts to offer a clarification of Zhu Xi’s distinction between principle and desire, through examining the different contexts of ancient and modern times and the self-evident premises therein, so as to reveal an alternative path of exploring the profound ideas in Zhu Xi’s Theory of Principle.         Co-saliency Detection Based on Superpixel Matching and Cellular Automata

        Co-saliency detection is a task of detecting same or similar objects in multi-scene, and has been an important preprocessing step for multi-scene image processing. However existing methods lack efficiency to match similar areas from different images. In addition, they are confined to single image detection without a unified framework to calculate co-saliency. In this paper, we propose a novel model called Superpixel Matching- Cellular Automata (SMCA). We use Hausdorff distance adjacent superpixel sets instead of single superpixel since the feature matching accuracy of single superpixel is poor. We further introduce Cellular Automata to exploit the intrinsic relevance of similar regions through interactions with neighbors in multi-scene. Extensive evaluations show that the SMCA model achieves leading performance compared to state-of-the-art methods on both efficiency and accuracy.

        Effect of pH Buffer and Carbon Metabolism on the Yield and Mechanical Properties of Bacterial Cellulose Produced by Komagataeibacter hansenii ATCC 53582

        Bacterial cellulose (BC) is widely used in the food industry for products such as nata de coco. The mechanical properties of BC hydrogels, including stiffness and viscoelasticity, are determined by the hydrated fibril network. Generally, Komagataeibacter bacteria produce gluconic acids in a glucose medium, which may affect the pH, structure and mechanical properties of BC. In this work, the effect of pH buffer on the yields of Komagataeibacter hansenii strain ATCC 53582 was studied. The bacterium in a phosphate and phthalate buffer with low ionic strength produced a good BC yield (5.16 and 4.63 g/l respectively), but there was a substantial reduction in pH due to the accumulation of gluconic acid. However, the addition of gluconic acid enhanced the polymer density and mechanical properties of BC hydrogels. The effect was similar to that of the bacteria using glycerol in another carbon metabolism circuit, which provided good pH stability and a higher conversion rate of carbon. This study may broaden the understanding of how carbon sources affect BC biosynthesis.

      • New avenues to heavy right-handed neutrinos with pair production at hadronic colliders

        <P>In many models incorporating the type-I seesaw mechanism, the right-handed neutrino (N) couples to heavy vector/scalar bosons and thereby has resonant pair production. It has barely received attention thus far; however, it may provide the best avenue to probe TeV scale N without requiring anomalously large mixing between N and the active neutrino nu(L). In this paper we explore the discovery prospects of (mainly heavy) N pair production at the 14 TeV LHC and future 100 TeV pp collider, based on the three signatures: (1) trilepton from N (-> lW(l)) N (-> lW(h)) with W-l/h being the leptonically/hadronically decaying W; (2) boosted di-Higgs boson plus E-T from N (-> nu(L)h) N (-> nu(L)h); (3) a single boosted Higgs boson with leptons and E-T from N (-> lW(l)) N (-> nu(L)h). At the 100 TeV collider, we also consider the situation when the Higgs boson is overboosted, thus losing its jet substructure. Interpreting our tentative results in the benchmark model, the local B-L model, we find that the (multi-) TeV scale N can be probed at the (100) 14 TeV colliders.</P>

      • Ant colony Algorithm based on Three Constraint Conditions for Cloud Resource Scheduling

        An improved ant colony algorithm based on the three constraint conditions that aiming at the problem of resource scheduling in cloud computing is proposed in this paper. this method is divided into three steps: Firstly, we describe the state transition probability by using the information heuristic factor and the expected heuristic factor. Secondly, the pheromone update strategy is used to design the scheduling process. Finally, the optimal path is based on the expected execution time, network delay and network bandwidth of three constraints. Experimental results show that the proposed method has faster execution speed than the traditional ant colony algorithm, and the load balancing of the results is more satisfactory.

        Uncover compressed supersymmetry via boosted bosons from the heavier stop/sbottom

        <P>A light stop around the weak scale is a hopeful messenger of natural supersymmetry (SUSY), but it has not shown up at the current stage of LHC. Such a situation raises the question of the fate of natural SUSY. Actually, a relatively light stop can easily be hidden in a compressed spectra such as mild mass degeneracy between stop and neutralino plus top quark. Searching for such a stop at the LHC is a challenge. On the other hand, in terms of the argument of natural SUSY, other members in the stop sector, including a heavier stop (t) over tilde (2) and lighter sbottom (b) over tilde (1) (both assumed to be left-handedlike), are also supposed to be relatively light and therefore searching for them would provide an alternative method to probe natural SUSY with a compressed spectra. In this paper we consider quasi-natural SUSY which tolerates relatively heavy colored partners near the TeV scale, with a moderately large mass gap between the heavier members and the lightest stop. Then W/Z/h as companions of (t) over tilde (2) and (b) over tilde (1) decaying into (t) over tilde (1) generically are well boosted, and they, along with other visible particles from (t) over tilde (1) decay, are a good probe to study compressed SUSY. We find that the resulting search strategy with boosted bosons can have better sensitivity than those utilizing multi-leptons.</P>
