        Three species of the family Noctuidae (Lepidoptera) new to China

        Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Observing Primo Vascular System Along Sciatic Nerve

        The primo vascular system was found in the epineurium along the rat sciatic nerve following subcutaneous injection of fluorescent nanoparticles at the Zusanli acupoint (ST-36). Nanoparticles were injected into the primo-vessel near ST-36 and flowed along the sciatic nerve. Fluorescence revealed a structure in the epineurium that was hardly detectable. Images of the isolated sample stained with 4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole were captured using confocal microscopy. These images showed the distinctive nuclei distribution and multi-lumen structure of primo-vessels that differentiate them from lymphatic vessels, blood capillaries and nerves. This study demonstrates a new use for nanoparticles in fluorescence reflectance imaging techniques during in vivo imaging of primo-vessels.

        Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activities of Novel (E)-3-(1-(Alkyloxyamino)ethylidene)-1-alkylpyrrolidine-2,4-dione Derivatives

        Twenty novel tetramic acid derivatives (E)-3-(1-(alkyloxyamino)ethylidene)-1-alkylpyrrolidine-2,4-diones were synthesized by the reaction of 3-(1-hydroxyethylidene)pyrrolidine-2,4-diones with O-alkyl hydroxylamines. The title compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, MS and elemental analysis. The structure of compound 6r was further verified by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The bioassays showed that most of the title compounds exhibited noticeable herbicidal and fungicidal activities.

      • Effects of Parafibromin Expression on the Phenotypes and Relevant Mechanisms in the DLD-1 Colon Carcinoma Cell Line

        Background: Parafibromin is a protein encoded by the HRPT2 (hyperparathyroidism 2) oncosuppressor gene and its down-regulated expression is involved in pathogenesis of parathyroid, breast, gastric and colorectal carcinomas. This study aimed to clarify the effects of parafibromin expression on the phenotypes and relevant mechanisms of DLD-1 colon carcinoma cells. Methods: DLD-1 cells transfected with a parafibromin-expressing plasmid were subjected to examination of phenotype, including proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, migration and invasion. Phenotype-related proteins were measured by Western blot. Parafibromin and ki-67 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays. Results: The transfectants showed higher proliferation by CCK-8, better differentiation by electron microscopy and ALP activity and more apoptotic resistance to cisplatin by DNA fragmentation than controls. There was no difference in early apoptosis by annexin V, capase-3 activity, migration and invasion between DLD-1 cells and their transfectants. Ectopic parafibromin expression resulted in down-regulated expression of smad4, MEKK, GRP94, GRP78, $GSK3{\beta}$-ser9, and Caspase-9. However, no difference was detectable in caspase-12 and -8 expression. A positive relationship was noted between parafibromin and ki-67 expression in colorectal carcinoma. Conclusions: Parafibromin overexpression could promote cell proliferation, apoptotic resistance, and differentiation of DLD-1 cells.

      • Prognostic Value of Subcarinal Lymph Node Metastasis in Patients with Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        Purpose: The 7th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging Manual for esophageal cancer (EC) categorizes N stage according to the number of metastatic lymph nodes (LNs), irrespective of the site. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of subcarinal LN metastasis in patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: A retrospective analysis of 507 consecutive patients with ESCC was conducted. Potential clinicopathological factors that could influence subcarinal LN metastasis were statistically analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were also performed to evaluate the prognostic parameters for survival. Results: The frequency of subcarinal LN metastasis was 22.9% (116/507). Logistic regression analysis showed that tumor length (>3cm vs ${\leq}3cm$; P=0.027), tumor location (lower vs upper/middle; P=0.009), vessel involvement (Yes vs No; P=0.001) and depth of invasion (T3-4a vs T1-2; P=0.012) were associated with 2.085-, 1.810-, 2.535- and 2.201- fold increases, respectively, for risk of subcarinal LN metastasis. Multivariate analyses showed that differentiation (poor vs well/moderate; P=0.001), subcarinal LN metastasis (yes vs no; P=0.033), depth of invasion (T3-4a vs T1-2; P=0.014) and N staging (N1-3 vs N0; P=0.001) were independent prognostic factors. In addition, patients with subcarinal LN metastasis had a significantly lower 5-year cumulative survival rate than those without (26.7% vs 60.9%; P<0.001). Conclusions: Subcarinal LN metastasis is a predictive factor for long-term survival in patients with ESCC.

        On Zhu Xi’s Distinction between Heavenly Principle and Human Desire

        朱熹的理欲之辨,多爲現代人所詬病,輕者視之爲禁欲主義,重者斥之爲“以理殺人”。應該說,以現代語言重新解讀古代思想,難免會出現一些偏差,因爲古今不同的話語系統預設了不同的自明前提,如果不對雙方的話語系統及其自明前提保持足夠的淸醒和自覺,誤讀和曲解將是必然的。事實上,這種誤讀和曲解充斥在朱熹理欲之辨的各個層次。如果說對人欲、人心、私利的誤解已經開始引起了人們的初步關注,盡管這種關注依然沒能擺脫現代語境的束縛,那麼,對天理和聖人的誤解則至今還未受到應有的反思,如馮友蘭、牟宗三等人的有關解釋一直在廣泛流傳,它們集中體現了現代語境對古代理念的粗暴扭曲。這些誤解不但遮蔽了理欲之辨的深層用意,同時也遮蔽了整個朱熹理學的深刻內涵。本文試圖從古今不同語境及其自明前提的考察入手,對朱熹的理欲之辨進行一番淸理,爲重新揭示朱熹理學的深層秘密探索一種可能的途徑。 Zhu Xi’s distinction between heavenly principle and human desire (理欲之辨) has been more often than not criticized by modern men, either as asceticism or as “demolishing humans with heavenly principles” (以理殺人). It should be acknowledged that errors are bound to occur should one employ modern languages to re-interpret ancient thoughts. For one thing, the discourse system internal to ancient times presupposed a self-evident premise that is different from that in modern times, a difference which, if ignored, will surely lead us to misinterpretations and misunderstandings. As a matter of fact, such misinterpretations and misunderstandings can be seen at the various levels of a modern reading of Zhu Xi’s distinction between principle and desire. In recent years, misunderstandings on such concepts as human desire (人欲), human mind (人心), or partial profit (私利) have received certain attention among scholars, an attention that has far to go yet in order to free itself from the shackles of modern contexts. By way of contrast, misunderstandings of other concepts, such as heavenly principle (天理) and the sage (聖人), have not received due reflection so far. Misinterpretations offered by such scholars as Feng Youlan (馮友蘭) and Mou Zongsan (牟宗三) are still popular among modern students of Zhu Xi, thus showing in a nutshell a coarse distortion of ancient ideas in modern contexts. These misunderstandings have not only hidden from view the profound meanings of Zhu Xi’s arguments, but also the intension of Zhu Xi’s theory of principle as a whole. This article attempts to offer a clarification of Zhu Xi’s distinction between principle and desire, through examining the different contexts of ancient and modern times and the self-evident premises therein, so as to reveal an alternative path of exploring the profound ideas in Zhu Xi’s Theory of Principle.         Effect of Circuit Parameters on Stability of Voltage-fed Buck-Boost Converter in Discontinuous Conduction Mode

        The state transition matrix are obtained by solving state equations in terms of Laplace inverse transformation and Cayley-Hamilton theorem, and an establishment of a precise discreteiterative mapping of the voltage-fed buck-boost converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode is made. On the basis of the mapping, the converter bifurcation diagrams and Lyapunov exponent diagrams with the input voltage, the resistance, the inductance and the capacitance as the bifurcation parameters are obtained, and the effect of the parameters on the system stability is deeply studied. The results obtained show that they have a great influence on the stability of the system, and the general trend is that the increase of either the voltage-fed coefficient, input voltage or the load resistance, or the decrease of the filtering inductance, capacitance will make the system stability become poorer, and that all the parameters have a critical value, and when they are greater or less than the values, the system will go through stable 1T orbits, stable 2T orbits, 4T orbits, 8T orbits and eventually approaches chaos.
