Quantum Entanglement in a Graphene Sheet
Zhan-Ning Hu,Kee-Su Park,이경수 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.54 No.2
We present the quantum entanglement and the thermal entanglement in a graphene layer. The model Hamiltonian is chosen within an effective-mass approximation, including the interaction of intervalley and intravalley scattering processes. We nd that the degenerate ground state is unentangled and that the thermal concurrence decreases down to zero as the temperature increases. A new maximally entangled quantum state is observed from the excited states of the system by using a proper choice of the Hamiltonian parameters. The bolted connections with slotted-in steel plates are basic beam-to-column connections of modern post-and-beam timber building structures. However, due to significantly pinched rotational behaviors, the moment resistance of such connections are usually ignored in design. In this study, the connection-level moment resistance is enabled for modern glulam frame structures with an innovative connection design. A pair of long steel rods with screwheads is designed to generate a force couple at the sides of the connection. The proposed connection could be considered as the key lateral force resisting component, indicating a significant reduction of lateral braces and shear walls. Specimens of the target connection were carefully designed and tested in the lab to obtain their mechanical properties and failure modes. Finite element models were established and calibrated according to the tested data. The moment-rotation curves of the new connection could be easily estimated through a fitted formula. Moreover, the suggestions to improve the proposed connection is also discussed based on the observed damage modes. Results show that the new connection could be treated as rigid moment-resisting connections while the ductility could be further improved.

A new technique is proposed for bridge structural damage detection based on spatial wavelet analysis of the time history obtained from vehicle body moving over the bridge, which is different from traditional detection techniques based on the bridge response. A simply-supported Bernoulli-Euler beam subjected to a moving spring-mass unit is established, with the crack in the beam simulated by modeling the cracked section as a rotational spring connecting two undamaged beam segments, and the equations of motion for the system is derived. By using the transfer matrix method, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the cracked beam are determined. The responses of the beam and the moving spring-mass unit are obtained by modal decomposition theory. The continuous wavelet transform is calculated on the displacement time histories of the sprung-mass. The case study result shows that the damage location can be accurately determined and the method is effective.

Two ergosterins and two triterpenoids were isolated from the dried fruit bodies of Ascomyce Bulgaria inquinans. By means of chemical (hydrolysis) and spectroscopic methods (NMR, EIMS), their structures were established as betuinic acid (1), cerevisterol (2), (24R)ergosta-7, 22Ediene- 3β, 5α, 6β-triol-3-O-palmitate (3) and ursolic acid (4). Compound 3 is a new compound.

Troubles are often met when traditional active contours extract boundaries of medical images with inhomogeneous bias and various noises. Focusing on such a circumstance, a localized mutual information active contour model is discussed in the paper. By defining neighborhood of each point on the level set, mutual information is introduced to describe the relationship between the zero level set and image field. A driving energy term is then generated by integrating all the information. In addition, an expanding energy and internal energy are designed to regularize the driving energy. Contrary to piecewise constant model, new model has a better command of driving the contours without initialization.

Strong earthquakes such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake often induced numerous landslides, which resulted in a large number of casualties and property losses. Under a strong earthquake, a rock slope often produced a dynamic progressive failure. Understanding the process of the dynamic progressive failure of the rock slope is of great significance for the prediction and prevention of the co-seismic landslide. Generally, the numerical method is a feasible and economic alternative to solve this problem. However, previous studies presumed the failure surface and area in the numerical model, which cannot reproduce the dynamic progressive failure of the rock slope. In this paper, we applied the Universal Discrete Element method (UDEC) was adopted to quantitatively characterize the dynamic progressive failure process of the Wangjiayan co-seismic landslide triggered by 2008 Wenchan earthquake. Different from previous studies, there exists no presumed failure surface and area was was presumed in the UDEC model. The initiation, coalescence of the local fractures and the formation of the final failure surface were well simulated in a real-time way. Some key factors influencing the dynamic progressive failure of the rock slope were systematically explored. This study provided a new insight to understand the disaster-pregnant mechanism, evolution, and formation of the co-seismic landslide.

The present work aimed to estimate the possible anti-fatigue effect and potential mechanism of Isochrysis galbana (IG) in mice. The anti-fatigue activity of IG (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) was elucidated by a weight-loaded forced swimming test, and the potential mechanism was explored by determination of fatigue-related biochemical parameters. The results showed that pretreatment with IG significantly extended the exhaustive swimming time and increased the levels of liver glycogen, muscle glycogen and blood glucose in a dose-dependent manner. Besides, the increased levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, blood lactic acid, lactic dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, and blood urea nitrogen by exhausted swimming, were dramatically attenuated by pretreatment with IG. Furthermore, supplementation with IG significantly enhanced the glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase levels, while attenuated the level of malonaldehyde. Taken together, IG possessed appreciable efficacy to alleviate fatigue, and the mechanism might be associated with favorably modulating the process of energy consumption, metabolism, and attenuating oxidative stress injury.

Cathepsins belong to a group of mammalian papain-like cysteine proteases that play an important role in the insect immune response. In the present study, we identified two cathepsin genes from the Diaphorina citri genome database, cathepsin-L (DcCath-L) and cathepsin-O (DcCath-O). DcCath-L encodes a DcCath-L protein consisting of 348 amino acid residues, and DcCath-O encodes a DcCath-O protein consisting of 329 amino acid residues. DcCaths contain two conserved domains, the Inhibitor_I29 and Pept_C1 domains. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that DcCath-L and DcCath-O were divided into two different groups: Cathepsin-L and Cathepsin-O. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that both DcCath-O and DCCath-L were highly expressed in the midgut, while lower expression was observed in other tissues. Developmental stage expression analysis suggested that DcCath-O was mainly expressed in third instar nymph and adult, and DcCath-L was highly expressed in first and fourth instar nymph. Following exposure to two different heat-killed bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the expression of DcCath-O and DcCath-L was significantly increased and showed differential expression patterns at different time points. In addition, silencing of DcCath-L obvious affected the gene expression of members of the Toll pathway, while knock down of DcCath-L has no significantly influence. Overall, these data provide valuable information for further functional studies of D. citri cathepsins.
