Cisplatin resistance is the main cause of colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment failure, and the cause has been reported to be related to Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) infection. In this study, we explored the role of Fn in regulating cisplatin resistance of CRC cells and its underlying mechanism involved. The mRNA and protein expressions were examined by qRT-PCR and western blot. Cell proliferation and cell apoptosis were assessed using CCK8 and flow cytometry assays, respectively. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was adopted to analyze the molecular interactions. Herein, our results revealed that Fn abundance and miR-135b expression were markedly elevated in CRC tissues, with a favorable association between the two. Moreover, Fn infection could increase miR-135b expression via a concentration-dependent manner, and it also enhanced cell proliferation but reduced apoptosis and cisplatin sensitivity by upregulating miR-135b. Moreover, KLF13 was proved as a downstream target of miR-135b, of which overexpression greatly diminished the promoting effect of miR-135b or Fn-mediated cisplatin resistance in CRC cells. In addition, it was observed that upstream 2.5 kb fragment of miR-135b promoter could be interacted by β-catenin/TCF4 complex, which was proved as an effector signaling of Fn. LF3, a blocker of β-catenin/TCF4 complex, was confirmed to diminish the promoting role of Fn on miR-135b expression. Thus, it could be concluded that Fn activated miR-135b expression through TCF4/β-catenin complex, thereby inhibiting KLF13 expression and promoting cisplatin resistance in CRC.

<P><I>p</I>-Quinodimethane (<I>p</I>-QDM) is a fundamental building block for the design of π-conjugated systems with low band gap and open-shell biradical character. However, synthesis of extended <I>p</I>-QDMs has usually suffered from their intrinsic high reactivity and poor solubility. In this work, benzannulation together with terminal cyano-substitution was demonstrated to be an efficient approach for the synthesis of a series of soluble and stable tetracyano-oligo(<I>N</I>-annulated perylene)quinodimethanes <B><I>n</I>Per-CN</B> (<I>n</I> = 1–6), with the longest molecule having 12 <I>para</I>-linked benzenoid rings! The geometry and electronic structures of these oligomers were investigated by steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, superconducting quantum interference device, and FT Raman spectroscopy assisted by density functional theory calculations. They showed tunable ground states, varying from a closed-shell quinoidal structure for monomer, to a singlet biradical for dimer, trimer, and tetramer, and to a triplet biradical for pentamer and hexamer. Large two-photon absorption cross-section values were observed in the near-infrared range, which also exhibited a clear chain-length dependence.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2013/jacsat.2013.135.issue-16/ja402467y/production/images/medium/ja-2013-02467y_0010.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja402467y'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Adaptive Differentiated Integrated Routing Scheme for GMPLS-based Optical Internet
Wei, Wei,Zeng, Qingji,Ye, Tong,Lomone, David The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2004 Journal of communications and networks Vol.6 No.3
A new online multi-layer integrated routing (MLIR) scheme that combines IP (electrical) layer routing with WDM (optical) layer routing is investigated. It is a highly efficient and cost-effective routing scheme viable for the next generation integrated optical Internet. A new simplified weighted graph model for the integrated optical Internet consisted of optical routers with multi-granularity optical-electrical hybrid switching capability is firstly proposed. Then, based on the proposed graph model, we develop an online integrated routing scheme called differentiated weighted fair algorithm (DWFA) employing adaptive admission control (routing) strategies with the motivation of service/bandwidth differentiation, which can jointly solve multi-layer routing problem by simply applying the minimal weighted path computation algorithm. The major objective of DWFA is fourfold: 1) Quality of service (QoS) routing for traffic requests with various priorities; 2) blocking fairness for traffic requests with various bandwidth granularities; 3) adaptive routing according to the policy parameters from service provider; 4) lower computational complexity. Simulation results show that DWFA performs better than traditional overlay routing schemes such as optical-first-routing (OFR) and electrical-first-routing (EFR), in terms of traffic blocking ratio, traffic blocking fairness, average traffic logical hop counts, and global network resource utilization. It has been proved that the DWFA is a simple, comprehensive, and practical scheme of integrated routing in optical Internet for service providers.

Background: The lymph node ratio (LNR) has been shown to be an important prognostic factor for colorectal cancer. However, studies focusing on the prognostic impact of LNR in rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by curative resection have been limited. The aim of this study was to investigate LNR in rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by curative resection. Materials and Methods: A total of 131 consecutive rectal cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant CRT and total mesorectal excision were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the LNR (${\leq}0.2$ [n=86], >0.2 [n=45]) to evaluate the prognostic effect on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: The median number of retrieved and metastatic lymph node (LN) was 14 (range 1-48) and 2 (range 1-10), respectively. The median LNR was 0.154 (range 0.04-1.0). In multivariate analysis, LNR was shown to be an independent prognostic factor for both overall survival (hazard ratio[HR]=3.778; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.741-8.198; p=0.001) and disease-free survival (HR=3.637; 95%CI 1.838-7.195; p<0.001). Increased LNR was significantly associated with worse OS and DFS in patients with <12 harvested LNs, and as well as in those ${\geq}12$ harvested LNs (p<0.05). In addition, LNR had a prognostic impact on both OS and DFS in patients with N1 staging (p<0.001). Conclusions: LNR is an independent prognostic factor in ypN-positive rectal cancer patients, both in patients with <12 harvested LNs, and as well as in those ${\geq}12$ harvested LNs. LNR provides better prognostic value than pN staging. Therefore, it should be used as an additional prognostic indicator in ypN-positive rectal cancer patients.

Background: Previous studies evaluated associations between the CYP1A2 rs762551 polymorphism and bladder cancer risk. However, the results were inconsistent. We therefore performed a meta-analysis of the published case-control studies to assess in detail the association between CYP1A2 rs762551 polymorphism and bladder cancer risk. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched to identify relevant studies and the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (95%CI) were calculated. Results: A total of seven articles including 3,013 cases and 2,771 controls were finally included. Overall, a significant association was found between the CYP1A2 rs762551 polymorphism and bladder cancer susceptibility for CC vs AA (OR=0.82, 95% CI=0.69~0.99), but no significant associations were found for the other three models (AC vs AA: OR=0.91, 95% CI=0.81~1.02; the dominant model: OR=0.90, 95% CI=0.80~1.00; the recessive model: OR=0.84, 95% CI =0.72~1.00). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, we detected significant associations between the CYP1A2 rs762551 polymorphism and bladder cancer susceptibility for GA vs GG (OR = 0.78, 95% CI =0.64~0.96) and for the recessive model (OR=0.80, 95% CI=0.66~0.96) in Caucasians, but not for Asians. Conclusions: The results from the meta-analysis suggested that the CYP1A2 rs762551 polymorphism is a protective factor for bladder cancer, especially in Caucasians.

This paper proposed a new probabilistic Bi-plane cellular automaton (CA) model to simulate the localized pitting corrosion of stayed cables. The CA model introduced chloride ions and their evolution rules to take into account the local acidifi cation catalysis is in microscopic scale. Besides, a Monte Carlo approach is adopted to analyze the statistical properties of corrosion pit size and their variation with respect to time. The proposed CA model is confi rmed by several published experiments on pitting corrosion. It is capable to reproduce the experimental observations and enlarge the sample space for subsequent mechanical analysis.
Position-independent wireless power transfer system delivering constant power
Zeng, Wei,Du, Guiping,Zhou, Runtang,Yang, Zijiang The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2022 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.22 No.10
A single-stage wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on the switching control capacitor (SCC) is proposed in this paper. Using the SCC instead of an ordinary capacitor gives the WPT system, an additional control degree of freedom. The proposed robust WPT system has a constant power (CP) output characteristic under a wide range of load resistance and coupling coefficient variations by adjusting the conduction angle of the SCC. When compared with constant current (CC) charging, CP charging can shorten the charging time and promote battery cycle life. Moreover, a primary side control method is proposed. It only needs to sample the primary current to identify the reflected impedance, which avoids wireless communication. When combined with the control strategy, the condition of zero-voltage switching (ZVS) is derived. Finally, a 125-W experimental prototype is built to verify the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrate that stable CP charging can be maintained during coil movement and load changes. In addition, soft switching is implemented in all situations.

Poly(β-L-malic acid) (PMA) is a promising polyester formed from L-malate in microbial cells. Malate biosynthesis is crucial for PMA production. Previous studies have shown that the non-oxidative pathway or oxidative pathway (TCA cycle) is the main biosynthetic pathway of malate in most of PMAproducing strains, while the glyoxylate cycle is only a supplementary pathway. In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenous metabolic intermediates and inhibitors of the malate biosynthetic pathway on PMA production by Aureobasidium melanogenum GXZ-6. The results showed that PMA production was stimulated by maleic acid (a fumarase inhibitor) and sodium malonate (a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor) but inhibited by succinic acid and fumaric acid. This indicated that the TCA cycle might not be the only biosynthetic pathway of malate. In addition, the PMA titer increased by 18.1% upon the addition of glyoxylic acid after 72 h of fermentation, but the PMA titer decreased by 7.5% when itaconic acid (an isocitrate lyase inhibitor) was added, which indicated that malate for PMA production was synthesized significantly via the glyoxylate cycle rather than the TCA cycle. Furthermore, in vitro enzyme activities of the TCA and glyoxylate cycles suggested that the glyoxylate cycle significantly contributed to the PMA production, which is contradictory to what has been reported previously in other PMA-producing A. pullulans.
Symmetric Conformal Mapping for Surface Matching and Registration
Zeng, Wei,Hua, Jing,Gu, Xianfeng David Society for Computational Design and Engineering 2009 International Journal of CAD/CAM Vol.9 No.1
Recently, various conformal geometric methods have been presented for non-rigid surface matching and registration. This work proposes to improve the robustness of conformal geometric methods to the boundaries by incorporating the symmetric information of the input surface. We presented two symmetric conformal mapping methods, which are based on solving Riemann-Cauchy equation and curvature flow respectively. Experimental results on geometric data acquired from real life demonstrate that the symmetric conformal mapping is insensitive to the boundary occlusions. The method outperforms all the others in terms of robustness. The method has the potential to be generalized to high genus surfaces using hyperbolic curvature flow.
