        Spatially variable effects on seismic response of the cable-stayed ‎bridges considering local soil site conditions

        In this study, stochastic responses of a cable-stayed bridge subjected to the spatially varying earthquake ground motion are investigated for variable local soil cases and wave velocities. Quincy Bay-view cable-stayed bridge built on the Mississippi River in Illinois, USA selected as a numerical example. The bridge is composed of two H-shaped concrete towers, double plane fan type cables and a composite concrete-steel girder deck. The spatial variability of the ground motion is considered with the coherency function, which is represented by the components of incoherence, wave-passage and site-response effects. The incoherence effect is investigated by considering Harichandran and Vanmarcke model, the site-response effect is outlined by using hard, medium and soft soil types, and the wave-passage effect is taken into account by using 1000, 600 and 200 m/s wave velocities for the hard, medium and soft soils, respectively. Mean of maximum response values obtained from the analyses are compared with those of the specific cases of the ground motion model. It is concluded that the obtained results from the bridge model increase as the differences between local soil conditions cases of the bridge supports change from firm to soft. Moreover, the variation of the wave velocity has important effects on the responses of the deck and towers as compared with those of the travelling constant wave velocity case. In addition, the variability of the ground motions should be considered in the analysis of long span cable-stayed bridges to obtain more accurate results in calculating the bridge responses.

      • Cyprus Peacebuilding Efforts and A Need for a New Parameter

        The unofficial interventions of international actors mainly the UN, EU and the USA in conflict and post-conflict societies to build a civil peace as the major element of liberal peace framework have been deeply disappointing. Peacebuilding initiatives in Cyprus are good example of this. This article focuses on the unofficial interventions to the conflict in Cyprus from the mid- 1990s onwards in order to explore some of the key challenges related to implementing the key elements of peacebuilding efforts. In this paper, the two main instruments of peacebuilding efforts the conflict resolution workshops and the NGOs as main pillars of creation of civil peace efforts are analyzed. Based on the partial success of these efforts, peace education as the new paradigma has been promoted in the paper for the creation of civil peace.

        Soil-structure-foundation effects on stochastic response analysis of cable-stayed bridges

        In this study, stochastic responses of a cable-stayed bridge subjected to the spatially varying earthquake ground motion are investigated by the finite element method taking into account soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The considered bridge in the analysis is Quincy Bay-view Bridge built on the Mississippi River in between 1983-1987 in Illinois, USA. The bridge is composed of two H-shaped concrete towers, double plane fan type cables and a composite concrete-steel girder deck. In order to determine the stochastic response of the bridge, a two-dimensional lumped masses model is considered. Incoherence, wave-passage and site response effects are taken into account for the spatially varying earthquake ground motion. Depending on variation in the earthquake motion, the response values of the cable-stayed bridge supported on firm, medium and soft foundation soil are obtained, separately. The effects of SSI on the stochastic response of the cable-stayed bridge are also investigated including foundation as a rigidly capped vertical pile groups. In this approach, piles closely grouped together beneath the towers are viewed as a single equivalent upright beam. The soil-pile interaction is linearly idealized as an upright beam on Winkler foundation model which is commonly used to study the response of single piles. A sufficient number of springs on the beam should be used along the length of the piles. The springs near the surface are usually the most important to characterize the response of the piles surrounded by the soil; thus a closer spacing may be used in that region. However, in generally springs are evenly spaced at about half the diameter of the pile. The results of the stochastic analysis with and without the SSI are compared each other while the bridge is under the sway of the spatially varying earthquake ground motion. Specifically, in case of rigid towers and soft soil condition, it is pointed out that the SSI should be significantly taken into account for the design of such bridges.

        Eff ectiveness of Soil–Structure Interaction and Dynamic Characteristics on Cable-Stayed Bridges Subjected to Multiple Support Excitation

        The purpose of the study is to determine the eff ects of multiple support excitations (MSE) and soil–structure interaction (SSI) on the dynamic characteristics of cable-stayed bridges founded on pile foundation groups. In the design of these structures, it is important to consider the eff ects of spatial variability of earthquake ground motions. To do this, the time histories of the ground motions are generated based on the spatially varying ground motion components of incoherence, wave-passage, and site-response. The eff ects of SSI on the response of a bridge subjected to the MSE are numerically illustrated using a three-dimensional model of Quincy Bayview cable-stayed bridge in the USA. The soil around the pile is linearly elastic, homogeneous isotropic half space represented by dynamic impedance functions based on the Winkler model of soil reaction. Structural responses obtained from the dynamic analysis of the bridge system show the importance of the SSI and the MSE eff ects on the dynamic responses of cable-stayed bridges.

        The Effects of Melatonin on Postoperative Intraabdominal Adhesion Formation

        Purpose: Postoperative intraabdominal adhesion formation is a major clinical problem. No previous study was found, reporting the relationship between adhesion formation and melatonin administration, but melatonin, a strong antioxidant, is recognized to have certain effects on the progression of adhesion formation mechanism. It was therefore decided to investigate the effects of melatonin on postoperative adhesion formation. Materials and Methods: A total number of 24 Spraque-Dawley rats were utilized. Three groups, described as: Group A, sham laparatomy (n=8), Group B, rats that underwent only ischemia-reperfusion (n=8) and Group C, rats that underwent ischemia- reperfusion and were given 10 mg/kg melatonin solution i.v. (n=8). For Groups B and C, the ileocolic vessels were clamped. Blood glutathione peroxidase levels of all study groups were assessed, then microscopic and macroscopic adhesion scores were evaluated. Results: Glutathione peroxidase levels of the melatonin-treated group were significantly higher and fibroblast proliferation and macroscopic adhesion scores were significantly lower, than in the melatonin-free group. Conclusion: The results of this study supported the hypothesis, that melatonin administration may prevent intraabdominal adhesions resulting from surgery.

        Reliability and Validity of the Turkish Version of the Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire in Older People

        Background: Activities and participation play important roles in the maintenance of healthy aging. The maintenance of these factors optimizes social life to increase the quality of life with aging. However, there is a lack of questionnaires in Turkish to evaluate activity and participation among older people. This study translated and cross-culturally adapted the Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire (Ox-PAQ) into Turkish and investigated its psychometric properties in the older adult population. Methods: The Turkish version of the Ox-PAQ was produced after a translation and back-translation process. The Ox-PAQ was administered to 230 and 60 individuals for construct validity and reliability analyses, respectively. To assess the test-retest reliability of the Turkish Ox-PAQ, the questionnaire was reapplied 7 days after the first interview. Cronbach’s alpha (α) was used to evaluate the internal consistency. The Ox-PAQ was compared to the Short Form-12 and the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living Scale to determine its validity. Results: The Turkish Ox-PAQ showed excellent internal consistency (α=0.98) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.98, 0.96, and 0.97 for the subscales of routine activity level, social engagement, and emotional well-being, respectively). In the validity analysis, factor analysis demonstrated a probable structure of the three factors that together explained 66.35% of the total variance. The Turkish Ox-PAQ was correlated with the other comparison measures used in this study. Conclusion: The Turkish Ox-PAQ is a reliable and valid questionnaire to evaluate the participation and activity levels of older people (Clinical Trial Number: NCT04368754).

        Comparing the effectiveness of ultrasound guided versus blind genicular nerve block on pain, muscle strength with isokinetic device, physical function and quality of life in chronic knee osteoarthritis: a prospective randomized controlled study

        Background: The genicular nerve block (GNB) is demonstrated from several reports to alleviate pain and improve knee functionality in patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis (OA). Ultrasound (US)-guided GNB has been the most used imaging method. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of US-guided versus blind GNB in the treatment of knee OA. Methods: This prospective, randomized clinical trial included patients with knee OA based on American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria. The patients were evaluated for clinical and dynamometer parameters at the baseline, 4 weeks after treatment, and 12 weeks after treatment. The patients underwent blind injection or US-guided injection. Results: When compared with the baseline, both groups showed significant improvement in pain, physical function, and quality of life parameters. Significant differences were observed between the groups for clinical parameters (30-second chair stand test, 6-minute walk test) in favor of the US-guided group. On the other hand, blind injection was more significantly effective on some parameters of the Nottingham Health Profile. There wasn’t any significant improvement in isokinetic muscle strength for either group. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that both US-guided and blind GNB, in the treatment of knee OA, were effective in reducing symptoms and improving physical function. GNB wasn’t an effective treatment for isokinetic muscle function. USguided injections may yield more effective clinical results than blind injections.

        Management of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone inhibitors and other antihypertensives and their clinical effects on pre-anesthesia blood pressure

        Background: Blood pressure fluctuations appear more significant in patients with poorly controlled hypertension and are known to be associated with adverse perioperative morbidity. In the present study, we aimed to determine the effects of antihypertensive drug treatment strategies on preanesthetic operating room blood pressure measurements.Methods: A total of 717 patients participated in our study; 383 patients who were normotensive based on baseline measurements and not under antihypertensive therapy were excluded from the analysis. The remaining 334 patients were divided into six groups according to the antihypertensive drug treatment. These six groups were examined in terms of preoperative baseline and pre-anesthesia blood pressure measurements. Results: As a result of the study, it was observed that 24% of patients had high blood pressure precluding surgery, and patients using renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASI) had higher pre-anesthesia systolic blood pressure than patients using other antihypertensive drugs. Patients who received beta-blockers were also observed to have the lowest pre-anesthesia systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean blood pressure, compared to others. Conclusions: Recently, whether RAASI should be continued preoperatively remains controversial. Our study shows that RAASI cannot provide optimal pre-anesthesia blood pressure and lead to an increase in the number of postponed surgeries, probably due to withdrawal of medication before the operation. Therefore, the preoperative discontinuation of RAASI should be reevaluated in future studies.
