Blood and Body Fluid Exposure Related Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of Hospital Based Health Care Providers in United Arab Emirates

Zaidi, Moazzam Ali,Grifftths, Robin,Beshyah, Salem A.,Myers, Julie,Zaidi, Mukarram A. Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2012 Safety and health at work Vol.3 No.3

Objectives: Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of healthcare providers related to occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens were assessed in a tertiary-care hospital in Middle East. Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken using a self-administered questionnaire based on 3 paired (infectivity known vs. not known-suspected) case studies. Only 17 out of 230 respondents had an exposure in the 12 months prior to the survey and of these, only 2 had complied fully with the hospital's exposure reporting policy. Results: In the paired case studies, the theoretical responses of participating health professionals showed a greater preference for initiating self-directed treatment with antivirals or immunisation rather than complying with the hospital protocol, when the patient was known to be infected. The differences in practice when exposed to a patient with suspected blood pathogens compared to patient known to be infected was statistically significant (p < 0.001) in all 3 paired cases. Failure to test an infected patient's blood meant that an adequate risk assessment and appropriate secondary prevention could not be performed, and reflected the unwillingness to report the occupational exposure. Conclusion: Therefore, the study demonstrated that healthcare providers opted to treat themselves when exposed to patient with infectious disease, rather than comply with the hospital reporting and assessment protocol.

Robust open tubular layer of S-ketoprofen imprinted polymer for chiral LC separation

Zaidi, Shabi Abbas,Cheong, Won Jo WILEY-VCH Verlag 2008 Journal of Separation Science Vol.31 No.16

This study is about the preparation of an open tubular capillary column of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and its application to chiral separation by μLC. A non-covalent in-situ molecular imprinting polymerization protocol was used to synthesize the S-ketoprofen MIP. A special procedure was employed to secure formation of an open tubular and rigid MIP layer in a silica capillary of 100 μm id. The capillary was filled with the reaction mixture, sealed, and placed in a water bath at 50°C for 3 h. Then it was flushed with a 0.5 MPa nitrogen flow for 5 min, and was again placed in the water bath for 2 h to complete MIP formation. Methacrylic acid (MAA) has been known to be an inefficient functional monomer in preparation of MIP of an acid molecule. However, MAA was used with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in preparation of the S-ketoprofen MIP in this study. The open tubular structure and the μLC mode of separation enabled free optimization without any restriction, thus a very good resolution (R = 4.7) of ketoprofen enantiomers was achieved when a mobile phase composed of 30% acetonitrile and 70% acetate buffer at pH 4.5 was used with 5 mbar inlet pressure. This may be partially attributed to the open tubular structure of our MIP, enabling low column back-pressure and free optimization of eluent composition, as well as to the small capillary dimensions. Our MIP capillary column also showed some versatility in chiral separation, thus a good chiral separation was observed for naproxen, ibuprofen, and fenoprofen enantiomers.

Long open tubular molecule imprinted polymer capillary columns with excellent separation efficiencies in chiral and non-chiral separation by capillary electrochromatography

        Zaidi, Shabi Abbas,Cheong, Won Jo WILEY-VCH Verlag 2009 Electrophoresis Vol.30 No.9

Long open tubular S-ketoprofen molecule imprinted polymer capillary columns (1, 2, and 3 m) with the number of theoretical plates (N) over a million for both chrial and non-chiral CEC separation have been prepared. Chiral separation of racemic ketoprofen and non-chiral separation of other profen drugs have been achieved with excellent efficiency and good selectivity after optimization of the chromatographic conditions. The N value per column was not proportional to the effective column length although it was increased with the column length. This study has shown the outstanding prospect of the strategy to form a porous and rugged open tubular layer in a moderately long (1 m) capillary column in molecule imprinted polymer-CEC studies.

Preparation of an open-tubular capillary column with a monolithic layer of S-ketoprofen imprinted and 4-styrenesulfonic acid incorporated polymer and its enhanced chiral separation performance in capillary electrochromatography

        Zaidi, S.A.,Cheong, W.J. Elsevier 2009 Journal of chromatography Vol.1216 No.14

Enhanced chiral separation performance has been observed for ketoprofen enantiomers in capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with an open-tubular (OT) column prepared with a specific molecule imprinted polymer (MIP) on the innerwall of 50μm ID capillary. The column was prepared by in situ thermal polymerization inside the pretreated and silanized fused silica capillary. A specific diluted monomer mixture composed of S-ketoprofen, methacrylic acid (MAA, functional monomer), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA, cross-linker), and 4-styrenesulfonic acid (4-SSA) dissolved in 9/1 (v/v) acetonitrile/2-propanol was used to fabricate the OT-MIP layer. 4-SSA was added to form a MIP layer capable of stable and strong electro-osmotic flow (EOF) over the pH range of this study securing CEC elution of ketoprofen having partial negative charge near the optimized pH. Various parameters such as buffer pH, organic modifier composition, salt concentration, and applied potential have been optimized for CEC chiral separation of ketoprofen enantiomers. Very good separation selectivity and efficiency were observed, thus the chromatographic resolution of ketoprofen enantiomers was as high as 10.5, and the number of theoretical plates of R-ketoprofen, 156,000/m (40,000/m for S-ketoprofen), which proves that the OT-MIP-CEC type approach is a promising strategy in MIP study.

Open tubular layer of S-ofloxacin imprinted polymer fabricated in silica capillary for chiral CEC separation

Zaidi, Shabi Abbas,Han, Kyoung Moon,Kim, Sung Soon,Hwang, Dong Guk,Cheong, Won Jo WILEY-VCH Verlag 2009 Journal of Separation Science Vol.32 No.7

An open tubular molecule imprinted polymer (OT-MIP) capillary column has been prepared for chiral separation of ofloxacin enantiomers in CEC. The S-ofloxacin imprinted OT column was fabricated by thermally initiated non-covalent polymerization procedure inside a pretreated and silanized fused silica capillary. The template molecule was incorporated with methacrylic acid (MAA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) and 4-styrenesulfonic acid (4-SSA) and dissolved in a porogen mixture of ACN/2-propanol (9:1). The separation efficiency of the 4-SSA MIP column was found quite better than that of the MIP column without 4-SSA. It has been demonstrated that our OT-MIP column can separate ofloxacin enantiomers with excellent chiral separation efficiency after tuning the various chromatographic conditions. The optimized chromatographic eluent was 85:15, v/v%, ACN/60 mM sodium acetate at pH 7. The separation efficiency and selectivity of chiral separation of this study were far better than those obtained by previous methods for chiral separation of R- and S-ofloxacin.

      • Utilisation of glass powder in high strength copper slag concrete

        Zaidi, Kaleem A.,Ram, Shobha,Gautam, Mukesh K. Techno-Press 2017 Advances in concrete construction Vol.5 No.1

This study was focused on the use of partial replacement of cement with glass powder in high strength concrete and also copper slag as a partial replacement of coarse sand in concrete. The high strength concrete was prepared with different mineral admixtures like silica fume, fly ash and rice ash husk in different proportions. An experimental investigation has been carried to study about the effect of glass powder on high strength copper slag concrete. The range of glass powder was 10%, 15% and 20% as a replacement of cement. The range of copper slag was 0%, 20%, 40% and 60% as a replacement of natural sand. In addition to the different percentage of fly ash, silica fume, and rice husk ash 5% and 10% was also studied in copper slag concrete. Thus, a total of 51 cubes were casted and compressive strength test was performed on them. The result of the study shows that the value of average compressive strength of concrete after addition of 10%, 15% and 20% of glass powder are 70.47, 72.01 and 73.31 respectively. The value of average compressive strength after addition of 20%, 40% and 60% copper slag as a replacement of sand are 72.18, 74.38 and 73.08 respectively. The value of average compressive strength after addition of 5% and 10% fly ash as a replacement of cement are 71.56 and 73.22. The value of average compressive strength after addition of 5% and 10% silica fume as a replacement of cement are 72.33 and 73.53. The value of average compressive strength after addition of 5% and 10% rice husk ash as a replacement of cement are 72.86 and 69.49. At the level of 20% replacement of cement by glass powder meets maximum strength as compared to that of controlled concrete and copper slag high strength concrete.
