      • A comparison of the neumann-kelvin and rankine source methods for wave resistance calculations

        Calm water wave resistance plays a very important role in ship hull design. Numerical methods are meaningful for this reason. In this study, two prevailing methods, the Neumann-Kelvin and the Rankine source method, were implemented and compared. The Neumann-Kelvin method assumes linearized free surface boundary condition and only needs to mesh the hull surface. The Rankine source method considers nonlinear free surface boundary condition and meshes both the ship hull surface and free surface. Both methods were implemented and the wave resistance of a Wigley III and three Series 60(Cb=0.6, 0.7, 0.8) hulls were analyzed. The results were compared with experimental results and the merits of both numerical techniques were quantified. Based on the results, it is concluded that the Rankine source method is more accurate in the calculation of the wave-making resistance. Using the Neumann-Kelvin method, it is found to be easier to model the hull and can be used for slender ships to solve problems like wave current coupling calculation.

      • Meta-Analysis of Circulating Endothelial Cells and Circulating Endothelial Progenitor Cells as Prognostic Factors in Lung Cancer

        Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic implications of pretreatment circulating endothelial cells (CECs) and circulating endothelial progenitor cells (CEPCs) for the survival of patients with lung cancer. Materials and Methods: Relevant literature was identified using Medline and EMBASE. Patient clinical characteristics, overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) together with CEC and CEPC positive rates before treatment were extracted. STATA 12.0 was used for our analysis and assessment of publication bias. Results: A total of 13 articles (8 for CEC and 5 for CEPC, n=595 and n=244) were pooled for the global meta-analysis. The odds ratio (OR) for OS predicted by pretreatment CECs was 1.641 [0.967, 2.786], while the OR for PFS was 1.168 [0.649, 2.100]. The OR for OS predicted by pretreatment CEPCs was 12.673 [5.274, 30.450], while the OR for PFS was 4.930 [0.931, 26.096]. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to clinical staging. Odds ratio (OR) showed the high level of pretreatment CECs only correlated with the OS of patients with advanced lung cancer (stage III-IV). Conclusions: High counts of CECs seem to be associated only with worse 1-year OS in patients with lung cancer, while high level of pretreatment CEPCs correlate with both worse PFS and OS.

      • Enzymatically Decomposed Antarctic Krill Oil Inhibits Atherosclerosis by Suppressing the Vascular Endothelial Inflammation

        Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) oil has emerged as a potential alternative for omega-3 supplementation and been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease risk. However, all relevant current krill oil extraction methods generally use organic solvents which could leave solvent residues on the final product. Hence, we established a solvent-free method by using proteases, evaluated effects of the enzymatically decomposed krill oil (EDKO) on vascular endothelial inflammation and atherosclerotic plaque formation, and explore its underlying mechanism of action. For these purposes, we prepared vascular inflammation model by partial carotid ligation in C57BL/6 mice and acute and chronic atherosclerosis models in apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE−/−) mice, and examined the effects of EDKO on inflammatory gene expression in arterial endothelium and development of atherosclerosis, respectively. Our results showed administration of EDKO by oral gavage down-regulated the expressions of pro-inflammatory genes (vascular cell adhesion protein 1, intercellular adhesion molecule 1, chitinase 3 like 1, and chemokine [C-C motif ] ligand 19) in arterial endothelium and inhibited atherosclerotic plaque formation in both acute and chronic model. Our findings suggest that dietary supplementation of EDKO provides antiatherogenic benefits by inhibiting vascular inflammation through regulating inflammatory gene expressions in arterial endothelium.

      • Effective Response of the Peritoneum Microenvironment to Peritoneal and Systemic Metastasis from Colorectal Carcinoma

        We here document discovery of a new and simple model of tumor seeding involving the mouse peritoneum. Irradiated tumor cells administered by i.p. injection provided effective vaccination against peritoneal carcinomatosis and distal metastasis with colorectal carcinomas. In flow cytometric analysis, CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, macrophages and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which are easy to obtain in the peritoneal cavity, were revealed to have significant differences between immunized and non-immunized mice and these contributed to antitumor responses. We also observed that both serum and peritoneal lavage fluid harvested from immunized mice showed the presence of CT26-specific autoantibodies. In addition, increase in level of TGF-${\beta}1$ and IL-10 in serum but a decrease of TGF-${\beta}1$ in peritoneum was found. Taken together, these findings may provide a new vaccine strategy for the prevention of peritoneal and even systemic metastasis of carcinomas through induction of an autoimmune response in the peritoneum.

      • Pretreatment Thrombocytosis as a Prognostic Factor in Women with Gynecologic Malignancies: a Meta-analysis

        Background: This study was performed to analyze the prognostic implications of pretreatment or preoperative thrombocytosis in women with gynecologic malignancies. Material and Methods: We surveyed 2 medical databases, PubMed and EMBASE, to identified all relevant studies. A total of 14 (n=3,490) that evaluated the link between thrombocytosis and 5-year survival were included. REVMAN version 5.1 was used for our analysis and publication bias was evaluated using the Begg's funnel plot and tested by STATA 11.0. Risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) generated by the random effect model were used to assess the strength of any association. Results: 709(20.3%) of the 3,490 patients exhibited thrombocytosis (platelet counts > $400{\times}10^9/L$) at primary diagnosis, and their mortality was 1.62-fold higher compared with the others (RR=1.62, 95%CI=[1.28-2.05], p<0.0001). Thrombocytosis failed to have a stronger effect on the survival of advanced patients of stages III to IV in our study (n=478, RR=1.29, 95% CI=[1.13-1.48], p=0.0003), nor in women with cervical cancer in stage IB (n=1371, RR=1.73, 95% CI=[1.71-2.58], p=0.007). In addition, when adjusted for different carcinoma, it was associated with worse prognosis for all except the ones with vulvar cancer (n=201, RR=0.43, 95% CI=[0.14-1.29], p=0.13). Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicated that thrombocytosis might be associated with a worse prognosis for patients with gynecologic malignancies but without specificity or sensitivity for the ones in advanced stage. When adjusted for different gynecologic malignancies, it showed a significant effect on survival of all except vulvar cancers.

        Structural and morphological features of concentric iron oxide/carbon nanotubes obtained from phospholipids

        <P>Biologically active 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-<I>sn</I>-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC<SUB>8,9</SUB>PC) nanotube-forming phospholipids (PLs) have been utilized as templates to prepare ferromagnetic nanotubes (FMNTs). Combining X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman, and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements, FMNTs morphological features and chemical composition were determined. These studies showed that FMNTs consist of iron oxide/carbon/iron oxide concentric nanotubes with the amorphous carbon phase sandwiched between two iron oxide layers. The iron oxide phase consists of nanocrystalline magnetite (Fe<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>) which coexist as tetrahedral Fe<SUP>3+</SUP> and octahedral Fe<SUP>2.5+</SUP> sites containing minute quantities of hematite (α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) phase. The carbon phase consists of amorphous carbon forming an amorphous carbon nanotube (ACNT). Magnetic measurements showed that saturation magnetization (M<SUB>s</SUB>) of FMNTs is 79 emu/g, but upon removal of the iron oxide outer and inner layers, ACNTs become paramagnetic. The electrical resistivity (ρ) of single FMNT is 3.3 × 10<SUP>−2</SUP> Ω·m, which decreases to 5.06 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP> Ω·m for ACNT.         Trend Analysis of Balcony Vegetable Gardens in Korea, Before and After COVID-19 Pandemic Using Big Data

        Background and objective: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been staying at home more and “balcony vegetable gardens,” a form of urban agriculture, have been mentioned more frequently. As a result of the Korea Housing Survey in 2020, the percentage of households living in apartments among general households in Korea was 51.1%, but there is insufficient research to understand public perception and trends of the balcony vegetable gardens. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the trends of balcony vegetable gardens over the last 4 years including before and after the COVID-19 outbreak and to provide basic data for effective application to related policies and research. Methods: A total of 5,011 posts that mentioned balcony vegetable gardens were collected from Naver blogs and cafes from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021. To tokenize nouns, Okt morphological analysis of KoNLPy was used, and keywords were derived using TfidfVectorizer of Scikit-learn library. Following that, LDA topic modeling was performed by setting the hyper parameters as α= 0.1, β = 0.01 and iterations = 1,000. The above analysis was conducted using Python 3.9.5. Results: Before the outbreak of COVID-19, balcony vegetable gardening began to receive attention and vitalized as a form of participation in urban agriculture, but after the outbreak, they are established as an activity for healing, emotional support, environmental campaign, and healthy hobby. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, people clearly seemed to seek a more sustainable lifestyle through balcony vegetable garden activities. This shows the values and expected outcomes the public has toward urban agriculture. Conclusion: Balcony gardening activities heal the public, and this healing effect could be a key to the revitalization and development of urban agriculture. These findings can help establish policies and set the directions for urban agriculture that reflect the values and expected outcomes the public has toward urban agricultural activities.
