Objectives: To assess the vitamin D status in postmenopausal women with osteoporotic fractures, determine its concentration by fracture site at the clinical setting, and compare the proportion of vitamin D deficiency with that reported in literature. Methods: The prospective study included 317 postmenopausal women with osteoporotic fractures who were treated consecutively from 2016 to 2018. After obtaining informed consent for participation in the seamless treatment of osteoporosis against fractures study, which is our initiative to prevent secondary osteoporotic fractures, we registered the patients, examined bone mineral density (BMD) at the unfractured femoral neck and lumbar spine, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration, blood chemistry, and bone turnover markers. Results: The mean age of the patients was 80.7 years. Moreover, 78% of patients of all fractures had 25(OH)D concentration < 20 ng/mL, whereas 12% of patients had 25(OH)D concentration 30 ng/mL 25(OH)D concentration in hip fractures was significantly lower than that in vertebral or distal radius fractures (P < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that 25(OH)D concentration is significantly associated with femoral neck BMD (b ¼ 0.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.78e12.17, P ¼ 0.03) and serum albumin concentration (b ¼ 0.21; 95% CI, 0.62e2.96, P < 0.001) in patients with 25(OH)D concentration < 30 ng/mL. Conclusions: The results of this study show that the proportion of postmenopausal women with osteoporotic fractures who had vitamin D deficiency was higher than the proportion in previous reports that examined general postmenopausal women (35.2%e52.0%).

GDP-L-galactose phosphorylase (GGP), similar to the enzyme encoded by Arabidopsis thaliana vtc 2 and kiwifruit EST319998, catalyzes the second committed step in the Smirnoff-Wheeler (SW) pathway for the biosynthesis of vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid; AsA) in plants. The ascorbic acid contents in the leaves of acerola (Malpighia glabra), that contains enormous amount of ascorbic acid, correlates with the mRNA abundance of its GGP (MgGGP). Only one copy of the gene was found in the genome of acerola. To increase AsA content in plant using MgGGP, the gene was ectopically expressed in tobacco as a model species. Collectively, transgenic tobacco plants expressing MgGGP have 2- to 3- fold increases in AsA contents when compared to the wild-type plant. These increases were in correlation with the MgGGP gene mRNA transcript levels of the transgenic plants.

Many researches have published numerous papers about the high-strain-rate obtained from Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) tests. And 6.5wt%Si steel is widely known as an excellent magnetic material because its magnetostriction is nearly zero. Single crystals are prepared by the Floating Zone(FZ) method, which melts the alloy by the use of a high temperature electron beam in a pure argon gas condition. In this paper, the fracture behavior of the poly crystals and single crystals (DO$_3$phase) of Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy by SHPB test is observed. The comparison of high-strain-rate results with static results was done. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Fe-6.5wt%Si alloy has higher strength at high-strain-rate tensile. SHPB results of polycrystal are twice as high as static results. (2) From the fractography, the cleavage steps are remarkably reduced in the SHPB test compared with the static test.

To evaluate the multiphase contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)-induced granulomatous prostatitis (GP). Magnetic resonance images obtained from five patients with histopathologically proven BCGinduced GP were retrospectively analyzed for tumor location, size, signal intensity on T2-weighted images (T2WI) and diffusion-weighted images (DWI), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value, and appearance on gadolinium-enhanced multiphase images. MR imaging findings were compared with histopathological findings. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-induced GP (size range, 9–40 mm; mean, 21.2 mm) were identified in the peripheral zone in all patients. The T2WI showed lower signal intensity compared with the normal peripheral zone. The DWIs demonstrated high signal intensity and low ADC values (range, 0.44–0.68 x 10-3 mm2/sec; mean, 0.56 x 10-3 mm2/sec), which corresponded to GP. Gadolinium-enhanced multiphase MR imaging performed in five patients showed early and prolonged ring enhancement in all cases of GP. Granulomatous tissues with central caseation necrosis were identified histologically, which corresponded to ring enhancement and a central low intensity area on gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging. The findings on T2WI, DWI, and gadolinium-enhanced images became gradually obscured with time. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-induced GP demonstrates early and prolonged ring enhancement on gadoliniumenhanced MR imaging which might be a key finding to differentiate it from prostate cancer.

Objective: To assess the noncontrast two-dimensional single-shot balanced turbo-field-echo magnetic resonance angiography (b-TFE MRA) features of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) status following endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and evaluate to detect endoleaks (ELs). Materials and Methods: We examined four aortic stent-grafts in a phantom study to assess the degree of metallic artifacts. We enrolled 46 EVAR-treated patients with AAA and/or common iliac artery aneurysm who underwent both computed tomography angiography (CTA) and b-TFE MRA after EVAR. Vascular measurements on CTA and b-TFE MRA were compared, and signal intensity ratios (SIRs) of the aneurysmal sac were correlated with the size changes in the AAA after EVAR (AAA prognoses). Furthermore, we examined six feasible b-TFE MRA features for the assessment of ELs. Results: There were robust intermodality (r = 0.92–0.99) correlations and interobserver (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.97–0.99) agreement. No significant differences were noted between SIRs and aneurysm prognoses. Moreover, “mottled high-intensity” and “creeping high-intensity with the low-band rim” were recognized as significant imaging findings suspicious for the presence of ELs (p < 0.001), whereas “no signal black spot” and “layered high-intensity area” were determined as significant for the absence of ELs (p < 0.03). Based on the two positive features, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for the detection of ELs were 77.3%, 91.7%, and 84.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the k values (0.40–0.88) displayed moderate-toalmost perfect agreement. Conclusion: Noncontrast MRA could be a promising imaging modality for ascertaining patient follow-up after EVAR.

Objectives: Physical activity to maintain bone mass and strength is important for hip fracture prevention. We aim to investigate the relationship between physical performance/activity status and bone mineral density (BMD)/hip structural analysis (HSA) parameters among postmenopausal women in Japan. Methods: Sixty-two postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis (mean age: 72.61 ± 7.43 years) were enrolled in this cross-sectional observational study. They were evaluated for BMD and HSA in the proximal femur by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and underwent several physical performance tests, the Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale of 25 questions (GLFS-25). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to summarize data on the BMD/HSA parameters. Partial correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) were performed to investigate the relationship between physical performance/activity status and BMD/HSA parameters of the proximal femur. Results: In a partial correlation analysis adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI), GLFS-25 scores were correlated with HSA parameter (|r| = 0.260-0.396, P < 0.05). Principal component 1 (PC1) calculated by PCA was interpreted as more reflective of bone strength based on the value of BMD/HSA parameters. The SEM results showed that the model created by the 3 questions (Q13, brisk walking; Q15, keep walking without rest; Q20, load-bearing tasks and housework) of the GLFS-25 had the best fit and was associated with the PC1 score (β = -0.444, P = 0.001). Conclusions: The GLFS-25 score was associated with the BMD/HSA parameter, which may reflect the bone strength of the proximal femur as calculated by PCA.
