Experimental Investigation and Finite Element Analysis on Flexural Behavior of PVA Fiber-Reinforced Recycled Concrete Slabs

        Yuan Fang,Feng Yu,Jie Song,Yuandi Qian,Qinglin Tao 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.26 No.9

This paper presents an experimental study on mechanical behavior of Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-recycled reinforced concrete (RC) one-way slabs. 21 specimens including 14 PVA fiber-reinforced recycled concrete slabs and 7 recycled RC slabs are fabricated and tested. The specimens are designed with different variables, such as replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) γ, reinforcement ratio ρs, content of PVA fibers ρf, and span-to-thickness ratio l/h. The findings demonstrate that yielding of longitudinal reinforcement, breaking or pulling out PVA fibers along crack gaps and crushing of recycled concrete eventually dominate the failures of PVA fiber-reinforced recycled RC one-way slabs. The ultimate carrying capacity enhances as ρf or ρs increases, while decreases as l/h increases. The ultimate carrying capacity decreases with the increment of , while the introduction of PVA fibers can alleviate this weakening effect. The ultimate carrying capacity of RCB and PRCB decreases by 11.96% and 2.15%, respectively when the increases from 0% from 100%. The ultimate deflection first increases and then decreases as ρs increases. Increasing γ, l/h or ρf increases the ultimate deflection. Comparatively, the variation of PVA fiber content has a more prominent effect on the ultimate deflection of PRCB-U. The ultimate deflection of PRCB-U and PRCB increases by 73.03% and 15.15% respectively when the content of PVA fibers increases from 1% to 2%. A verified finite element (FE) model for PVA fiber-reinforced recycled RC one-way slabs under static load is established on account of rational constitutive relationship of materials. Then, the parametric studies are carried out to further reveal stress mechanism and the impacts of five main influence parameters on mechanical behaviors are ulteriorly analyzed. Ultimately, several design recommendations are suggested based on the experimental and FE analysis results. The suggested content of PVA fibers is between 0.5% and 2% and the optimal reinforcement rate ranges from 0.49% to 0.59%.

Bacterial Fruit Rot of Apricot Caused by Burkholderia cepacia in China

        Yuan Fang,Bin Li,Fang Wang,Baoping Liu,Zhiyi Wu,Ting Su,Wen Qiu,Guanlin Xie 한국식물병리학회 2009 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.25 No.4

An unreported disease of apricot was observed in orchards in Zhejiang province, China. Symptoms started as water soaked lesions on the fruit surface. Later, water-soaked areas developed and spread to the entire fruit, resulting in soft rot of the whole fruit. The causal organism isolated from symptomatic fruits was identified as Burkholderia cepacia based on its biochemical and physiological characteristics and confirmed by the cellular fatty acid composition and Biolog data as well as 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The bacterial isolates caused similar symptoms when inoculated onto fruits of apricot. In addition, European plum, Japanese plum, nectarine and kiwifruit were susceptible to the B. cepacia pathogen. However, the B. cepacia pathogen failed to cause any visible symptoms when it was inoculated onto 16 other fruits. This is the first report of a bacterial disease of apricot caused by B. cepacia in China.

Diversity Analysis of Burkholderia cepacia Complex in the Water Bodies of West Lake, Hangzhou, China

        Yuan Fang,Guan-lin Xie,Miao-miao Lou,Bin Li,Ibrahim Muhammad 한국미생물학회 2011 The journal of microbiology Vol.49 No.2

A survey of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) species was conducted in water bodies of West Lake in China. A total of 670 bacterial isolates were recovered on selective media. Out of them, 39.6% (265 isolates)were assigned to the following species: Burkholderia multivorans, Burkholderia cenocepacia recA lineage IIIA,IIIB, Burkholderia stabilis, Burkholderia vietnamiensis, and Burkholderia seminalis while B. cenocepacia is documented as a dominant Bcc species in water of West Lake. In addition, all Bcc isolates tested were PCR negative for the cblA and esmR transmissibility marker genes except B. cenocepacia IIIB A8 which was positive for esmR genelater. The present study raises great concerns on the role of West Lake as a “reservoir” for potential Bcc pathogenic strains.

An analytical model for PVC-FRP confined reinforced concrete columns under low cyclic loading

        Yuan Fang,Feng Yu,Anchun Chen,Shilong Wang,Guoshi Xu 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.77 No.2

Experimental investigations on the seismic behaviors of the PVC-FRP Confined Reinforced Concrete (PFCRC) columns under low cyclic loading are carried out and two variable parameters including CFRP strips spacing and axial compression ratio are considered. The PFCRC column finally fails by bending and is characterized by the crushing of concrete and yielding of the longitudinal reinforcement, and the column with a high axial compression ratio is also accompanied by the cracking of the PVC tube and the fracture of CFRP strips. The hysteretic curves and skeleton curves of the columns are obtained from the experimental data. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the stiffness degradation rate accelerates and the ductility decreases. With the decrease of CFRP strips spacing, the unloading sections of the skeleton curves become steep and the ductility reduces significantly. On the basis of fiber model method, a numerical analysis approach for predicting the skeleton curves of the PFCRC columns is developed. Additionally, a simplified skeleton curve including the elastic stage, strengthening stage and unloading stage is suggested depending on the geometric drawing method. Moreover, the loading and unloading rules of the PFCRC columns are revealed by analyzing the features of the skeleton curves. The quantitative expressions that are used to predict the unloading stiffness of the specimens in each stage are proposed. Eventually, an analytical model for the PFCRC columns under low cyclic loading is established and it agrees well with test data.

Effects of particle size and adaptation duration on the digestible and metabolizable energy contents and digestibility of various chemical constituents in wheat for finishing pigs determined by the direct or indirect method

        Yuanfang Fan,Panpan Guo,Yuyuan Yang,Tian Xia,Ling Liu,Yongxi Ma 아세아·태평양축산학회 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.4

Objective: This experiment was conducted as a 3×2×2 factorial design to examine the effects of particle size (mean particle size of 331, 640, or 862 μm), evaluation method (direct vs indirect method) and adaptation duration (7 or 26 days) on the energy content and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of various chemical components in wheat when fed to finishing pigs. Methods: Forty-two barrows (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial body weight of 63.0±0.8 kg were individually placed in metabolic cages and randomly allotted to 1 of 7 diets with 6 pigs fed each diet. For the indirect method, the pigs were fed either a corn-soybean meal based basal diet or diets in which 38.94% of the basal diet was substituted by wheat of the different particle sizes. In the direct method, the diets contained 97.34% wheat with the different particle sizes. For both the direct and indirect methods, the pigs were adapted to their diets for either 7 or 26 days. Results: A reduction in particle size linearly increased the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents as well as the ATTD of gross energy, crude protein, organic matter, ether extract (EE) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) (p<0.05), and had a trend to increase the ATTD of dry matter of wheat (p = 0.084). The DE, ME contents, and ATTD of gross energy, crude protein, dry matter and organic matter were higher (p<0.05) when determined by the direct method, but the ATTD of ADF, EE, and neutral detergent fiber were higher when determined by the indirect method (p<0.05). Prolongation of the adaption duration decreased the ATTD of neutral detergent fiber (p<0.05) and had a trend to increase the ATTD of EE (p = 0.061). There were no interactions between particle size and the duration of the adaptation duration. The ATTD of EE in wheat was influenced by a trend of interaction between method and adaptation duration (p = 0.074). The ATTD of ADF and EE in wheat was influenced by an interaction between evaluation method and wheat particle size such that there were linear equations (p<0.01) about ATTD of ADF and EE when determined by the direct method but quadratic equations (p = 0.073 and p = 0.088, respectively) about ATTD of ADF and EE when determined by the indirect method. Conclusion: Decreasing particle size can improve the DE and ME contents of wheat; both of the direct and indirect methods of evaluation are suitable for evaluating the DE and ME contents of wheat with different particle sizes; and an adaptation duration of 7 d is sufficient to evaluate DE and ME contents of wheat in finishing pigs.

        Struggle for Partial Mutual Recognition

Yuanfang Dai 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2007 Asian Women Vol.23 No.3

In this paper, after restating Jessica Benjamin’s proposal about the relationship between self-assertion and mutual recognition, the author criticizes that Benjamin’s argument leaves out the economic and political factors. The paper presents arguments which emphasize the socio-political aspect of women’s oppression. The oppressive system is regarded as a big birdcage which is woven by various kinds of wires, such as sexism wires, classism wires, and racism wires. The liberation of women means that women want the right to be as free as men rather than exclude men or have a counter power paralleling the phallic order. The paper argues that it is impossible to have a genderless society or a sexually egalitarian society, and it is also impossible to have full mutual recognition between women and men. Therefore, the author proposes an approach which is called “partial mutual recognition” to get out of male domination. This phrase refers to recognition that regards others as subjects instead of objects, namely, mutual recognition among women.
