Yu, Jie-Ae(유지애) 새한영어영문학회 2015 새한영어영문학 Vol.57 No.2
This article examines how John Donne reflects on the diverse aspects of vicissitudes in Devotions upon Emergent Occasions II. A number of textual passages enumerate the author’s contemplations into changeability of the world in general and his personal life in particular. Through the structure of “Meditation,” “Expostulation,” and “Prayer,” he investigates the thematic concerns with capriciousness, the ironic boundaries of human competence, and his spiritual enlivening into the perpetual presence and working of the Almighty, which remains beyond the mutable realm of human affairs and enterprises.
( Jie Ae Yu ) 한국현대영어영문학회 2010 현대영어영문학 Vol.54 No.2
The main purpose of this paper is to examine how Byron`s Childe Harold`s Pilgrimage IV depicts the mutability and ironic results of man`s diverse cultural activities and achievements. A number of textual evidences clearly reveal one of the recurrent motifs, which features Childe Harold`s unswerving meditations on the changeable, unexpected consequences of man`s artistic or literary pursuits and productions. The poet gradually unfolds the multiple layers of the protagonist`s subtle and complex observations into the diverse and mutable aspects of human enterprises, deploying efficient structure, imagery, and tonal complexity to elaborate such thematic concerns. The paper also aims to scrutinize how Childe Harold searches for the undeminishing power and influence of the imperishable spirit which persistently underlies art, nature, and the human mind. Indeed, Childe Harold undertakes a spiritual journey in which he struggles to surpass the transitory sides of man`s efforts and attainments embodied in the external cultural products. Matthew Arnold’s Sohrab and Rustum : Unfurling Characterization and Thematic Manifestations
Yu, Jie-Ae 한국중앙영어영문학회 2021 영어영문학연구 Vol.63 No.4
This article examines how Arnold’s narrative poem Sohrab and Rustum manifests unique features of two main characters in reference to concepts of unknown irresistible power and man’s relentless defiance. This poem, published during the early stage of Arnold’s literary career in 1853, resonates Sophoclean concepts of the clash between fate and human pride. While dealing with Arnoldian awareness of the Greek dramatic allusion, this paper also highlights his anticipation of later figures, for instance, Thyrsis and poetic speakers who reflect the spirit of Sohrab and Rustum but show their own unique personalities. It also argues that Arnold’s characterization in Sohrab and Rustum establishes key concepts of the bounds of human wishes and enterprises against their adverse forces. While scrutinizing this aspect, the paper relates this aspect to Arnold’s earlier works. In addition, it demonstrates that his portrayals of the characters foreshadows a wide range of the subsequent construction of his literary oeuvre which associates with the speaker’s elegiac lyric sensitivity to the era of spiritual turmoil and the author’s dynamic portrayals of the paradox and irony of man’s life and the world.
Selective Adsorption and Reusability for Pb2+ of Chitosan-based Microporous Polymer
Jie Yu,Jidong Zheng,Quanfang Lu,Xing Wang,Xiaomin Zhang,Qizhao Wang,Wu Yang 한국고분자학회 2017 폴리머 Vol.41 No.3
A green and simple glow-discharge electrolysis plasma (GDEP) technique was used to synthesize the chitosan/attapulgite/poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (CS/ATP/P(AA-co-AMPS)) microporous polymer. The results showed that the optimum pH for the adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, Co2+, and Cu2+ is 4.8, and time of adsorption equilibrium is 60 min. Adsorption kinetics fits well to the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Co2+ are 500.0, 301.7, 180.0 and 151.7 mg g-1, respectively. The microporous polymer has higher adsorption selectivity toward Pb2+ with the coexistence of Cd2+, Co2+, and Cu2+. The CS/ATP/P(AAco-AMPS) possesses promising regeneration and reusability using 2.0 g L–1 ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt (EDTA-4Na) solution as eluent. CS/ATP/P(AA-co-AMPS) can be used as a very promising absorbent for the separation purification and selective recovery of Pb2+ in aqueous solution containing Cd2+, Co2+, and Cu2+ ions.
Jie-Ae Yu 한국영미어문학회 2019 영미어문학 Vol.- No.135
This article investigates how Arnold’s “The Church of Brou” manifests his thematic concerns with vicissitude of human felicity, tribulation necessitated by it, and his resilient search for attaining spiritual fortification so as to overcome such apparent sensitivity to predicament. In the intertwined structure of three sections, “The Castle,” “The Church,” and “The Tomb,” the author unravels the ironic loss and deprivation of one’s longing for the private and religious realms of ideal goals. As in his early poems, Arnold sustains his prominent issue of man’s tribulation which registers dilemmatic conflicts between his stoical resolution and its opposing threats. However, the unique features of “The Church of Brou” underlie its diverse range of treating poetic objects which bring about the paradoxical facets of mutable occurrences. The poem prefigures subsequent elegiac poems and prose works in which Arnold embodies an ardent quest for immortality of man’s spiritual faculty, whereby he can liberate himself from the sustaining perceptions of the irresolvable predicament.

The aim of this study was to isolate antioxidant peptides from an enzymatic hydrolysate of Spirulina platensis. A novel antioxidant peptide was obtained by ultrafiltration, gel filtration chromatography, and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, with the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay used to measure the antioxidant activity, and the sequence was determined to be Pro-Asn-Asn (343.15 Da) by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. This peptide was synthesized to confirm its antioxidant properties, and it exhibited 81.44 ± 0.43% DPPH scavenging activity at 100 μg/ml, which was similar to that of glutathione (82.63 ± 0.56%). Furthermore, the superoxide anion and hydroxyl free-radical scavenging activities and the SOD activity of the peptide were 47.84 ± 0.49%, 54.01 ± 0.82%, and 12.55 ± 0.75%, respectively, at 10 mg/ml. These results indicate that S. platensis is a good source of antioxidant peptides, and that its hydrolysate may have important applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
Matthew Arnold’s Empedocles on Etna: Adversity, Contemplation, and Territory of Human Resolution
Yu, Jie-Ae 신영어영문학회 2020 신영어영문학 Vol.75 No.-
This article examines how Matthew Arnold’s dramatic poem, Empedocles on Etna, embodies the protagonist’s internal dialogue with his mind and a spiritual awakening in reacting to the irresistible moments of his affliction imposed by himself and society. Setting aside the spiritual problems of the Victorian era, the writer refers back to the ancient Sicilian philosopher to investigate the disregarded root and cause of human suffering, his resilient power to cope with it, and the boundary of man’s determination in resolving the distressing matter. Arnold’s Empedocles on Etna reworks the nature of drama, whose chief feature underlies a severe conflict inherent in internal and external domains. Arnold brings forward the protagonist’s deep solitude where he reveals his dialogue with his own mind and frustrates to liberate himself from the heavy burden of grief and solitariness. He is hurled into a spiritual turbulence, yet his unswerving meditation drives him to the fire of crater which ignites his vibrant solution for rejuvenating man’s spiritual power and dignity.
