Byron’s Hebrew Melodies and the Manifold Repercussions of Music

        ( Jie-ae Yu ) 대한영어영문학회 2016 영어영문학연구 Vol.42 No.4

The main purpose of this article is to investigate how Byron’s Hebrew Melodies features his diverse deployment of the function of music in personal, social, and spiritual domains. Byron’s utilization of music is closely entwined with enhancing his thematic considerations such as the curing process of the speaker’s heavy heart imposed by the continual sense of private, inward distress. The author’s manifestation of music is also used to enact the imperishable achievement and fame of a dead person whereby his absence does not leave friends and relatives bereft and miserable. In addition, Byron accentuates the social function of music which enables the Hebrews to maintain their identity and unification in sharing their afflictive moment of slavery. Hebrew Melodies further embodies the spiritual power of music which drives the Hebrews to yearn for regaining their past glory and liberation. (Changwon National University)

Mary Shelley’s Reworking of the Two Stories of the Prometheus Myth in Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus

        ( Yu Jie-ae ) 대한영어영문학회 2008 영어영문학연구 Vol.34 No.3

This article aims to show how Mary Shelley reworks the Greek and Roman myth of Prometheus through her portrayals of three protagonists in Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, namely Robert Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and Frankenstein’s creature. In investigating her reworking of the ancient myths, the paper primarily looks at her main concern with the theme of transgressive desire which she constructs in various ways, by making an effective interlocking structure narrated by three main characters. Her adaptation of the Prometheus myths involves her perceptions of contemporary age, when they were greatly interested in the possibility of creation of life through the power of science. In addition, it conveys her vision of forthcoming danger and problems of science, which originated from man’s unswerving ambition to be like God. The article explores such layers of significances which underlie her creative adaptations of the two Prometheus myths. (Changwon University)

“The ineradicable taint of sin”: Lord Byron’s The Giaour

        ( Yu Jie-ae ) 대한영어영문학회 2006 영어영문학연구 Vol.32 No.3

In The Giaour, Byron investigates the Giaour’s unforgettable memory of past sin, which leads to hampering the power of his autonomy in the face of fate. The contemporary reviews of Byron’s The Giaour (1813) in publications such as the Antijacobin Review (1813), the British Critic (1813), and the Edinburgh Review (1813) disregarded such complexity of the Giaour’s inner turbulence, declaring that Byron was so fascinated by his own image that he projected his own personality onto the hero of The Giaour. Most modern critics have also tended toward views similar to that of the poet. However, the problem with such an interpretation is that it does not do justice to the psychological subtlety and intensity of Byron’s characterization -the figure of the Giaour being an important illustration of this point. This paper will show how Byron creates a psychologically rich character in the person of the Giaour. It will highlight the clash between fate imposed upon himself by his past wrongdoing and his eagerness to be free from the unremovable stain of his past sin. His strong perception of sin eventually enfeebles his determination to defy his sorrow, whereby he becomes a victim of his own helplessness. (Changwon National University)

Transcriptional activation of insulin-like growth factor binding protein 6 by 17β-estradiol in SaOS-2 cells

        Yu-yan Zhao,Lei Guo,Xiao-juan Zhao,Hong Liu,Tian Lei,Dong-jie Ma,Xiao-yu Gao 생화학분자생물학회 2009 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.41 No.7

Osteoblasts can synthesize the insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and the IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), which may either enhance or attenuate IGF-stimulated bone cell proliferation. Since estrogen induced osteoblastic differentiation and proliferation through an estrogen- responsive gene in target cells, we investigated the effects of estrogen on IGFBP-6 expression in the human osteoblastic-like cell line SaOS-2. Expressions of IGFBP-6 protein and mRNA increased 2.8 and 2-fold, respectively, in the presence of 17-β-estradiol (E2) (0.01 to 1 μM) and estrogen receptor (ER) in SaOS-2 cells. On the other hand, E2 induced a 2-fold increase in SaOS-2 cell proliferation. To identify genomic sequences associated with estrogen responsiveness, the 5'-promoter region (-44 to +118) of the IGFBP-6 gene was cloned into a chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) reporter vector. E2 induced a 3-fold increase in CAT activity in SaOS-2 cells transiently transfected with this construct. Identification of the estrogen- responsive element (ERE) [5'-CCTTCA CCTG-3'] (-9 to +1) in this IGFBP-6 gene promoter region was confirmed using electromobility shift assays and deletion analysis. This functional ERE was important for E2-induced trans-activation of the IGFBP-6 gene. These results demonstrate that E2 exhibits a positive effect on IGFBP-6 gene transcription through estrogen- liganded ER binding to the functional ERE in the IGFBP-6 gene promoter in SaOS-2 cells. “The strength to bear my wounds”: Mazeppa and the Quest for Vigor in Adversity

        ( Yu Jie-ae ) 대한영어영문학회 2009 영어영문학연구 Vol.35 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the multifaceted sides of Mazeppa’s physical and mental sufferings, revealed by the symbolic ramifications of his compelled expedition into the dark, vast woods. It will examine how Byron’s Mazeppa depicts the procedure in which Mazeppa undergoes his physical and mental torments, unveiling his diverse and complex attitudes toward the adverse states of distress and misery. We will scrutinize the dynamic and subtle layers of Mazeppa’s thoughts and actions, which feature his various responses to the ordeals, and his attempts to resist or embrace them through his willpower. The essay will also consider how Mazeppa’s spiritual journey, accompanying his stoical search for vitality and relief, is enriched with an extensive range of unexpected and ironic consequences, which pave the way for the heroes of Beppo, The Island, and Canto III of Don Juan. “Under Afflictions” : Articulating Bereavement and Distress in The Wife’s Lament and The Riming Poem

        Jie-Ae Yu 한국중앙영어영문학회 2010 영어영문학연구 Vol.52 No.1

Little critical attention has been paid to the recurring motifs of loss and suffering contrived in elegiac Old English poems, in particular, The Wife’s Lament and The Riming Poem. The key purpose of this article is to examine how these works represent the speakers’ persistent meditations on their wretched, irresistible hardships of bereavement and distress triggered largely by the unanticipated mutability of human affairs. The speakers’ keen awareness of the displacement of a dearest person, fame, joy, or stability drives them to undertake distress which is hurled into a discord between fate and human willpower. This paper also explores the unique way in which both speakers articulate their agonizing thoughts of pain and loss in the tragic circumstances. They unveil complex responses to their internal torments in different ways, especially, in their religious perspectives on the elimination of anguish inside them.

Matthew Arnold’s “Resignation” : Manifestations of Predicament, Forbearance, and a Quest for Resilient Force

        Yu, Jie-Ae 한국중앙영어영문학회 2019 영어영문학연구 Vol.61 No.4

This article investigates how Matthew Arnold’s early poem “Resignation” investigates the speaker’s perceptions of the power of unanticipated adversity, irresistible undertaking, and a vigorous pursuit of human resolution. Reworking an ode form into his work, devoted to his sister suffering from her precipitous affliction, Arnold ponders over the problem of man’s adverse fortune, his graceful-mindedness to forbear such occurrences, and to simultaneously pursue an unswerving power inherent within his willpower. Among his initial poems, this poem is remarkable in foreshadowing one of the writer’s recurrent thematic concerns with the dilemma of human choice under the ineluctable force of its bizarre and repugnant counterpart. In reference to his various poems and prose works, “Resignation” certainly establishes the germ of the territory of one’s resilient and free choice, which leads to his later portrayal of Empedocles’s defiant spirit, whose characterization has been regarded as one of Arnold’s great literary distinctions. Arnold’s poetic purpose is not to reveal the characters’ resigned stance, but discover an Empedocles-like dynamic and vibrant spirit of man in response to the present predicament.

Byron’s Marino Faliero : The Conflict between Willpowers in Venetian Society

        Yu, Jie-Ae 한국중앙영어영문학회 2010 영어영문학연구 Vol.52 No.4

Little critical attention has been paid to Byron’s Marino Faliero, in particular, his evident concern with the feature and boundary of the protagonist’s unswerving willpower to pursue political intrigue against the ingrained corruption of Venetian oligarchy. This paper contends that a number of textual instances clearly exhibit the recurring motif such as the Doge’s assertive resolution for the rebellion which brings about its ironic, tragic consequences to both the protagonist and his conspirators. The main purpose of this article is to investigate how the poet depicts the irresolvable, conflicting relationship between Marino Faliero’s freedom of will and its externalization in the social organization regulated by Venetian aristocracy. The paper focuses on the procedure of the protagonist’s exercising of his willpower, which is intertwined with his own sense of fate and simultaneously the adverse, outer forces inherent within the arbitrary, corrupted power of the Council. Byron gradually unfolds the Doge’s vigorous pursuit of the freedom and glory of Venice, which features his rebellious attitude toward Venetian oligarchy. In portraying this, the author, at the same time, accentuates the questions of dilemma and limitation of man’s free choice, which struggles with the general will of the political organization. In addition, he elaborates other dramatic characters like Angiolina, Bertram and his defiant comrades, who play crucial role in propounding the complex, subtle aspects of the Doge’s willpower and activities.
