• An investigation on the relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and visuospatial ability factors

Vol.2021 No.11

Objective: The objective of the current study was to investigate the relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and different factors of visuospatial ability. Background: Human visuospatial ability is conceptualized as consisting of multiple sub-components or factors. Such factors of visuospatial ability include: Visualization (VZ), Spatial Relations (SR), Closure Speed (CS), Flexibility of Closure (CF), and Perceptual Speed (P). Some research studies have identified associations/correlations between motion sickness and visuospatial ability suggesting some links between the two constructs. However, none of the previous studies have explored the possible relation between motion sickness susceptibility and visuospatial ability. Therefore, it can be understood in more detail by revealing a possible relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and components of visuospatial ability. The impact of these findings can have a wide range of implications for motion sickness research, especially in the field of visuospatial ability. However, the relationship between motion sickness and visuospatial ability still remains unclear. In particular, the relationships between motion sickness and individual factors of visuospatial ability have not been investigated sufficiently. An understanding of the relationships would inform future motion sickness research and in particular may contribute to developing training methods for reducing individuals’ motion sickness susceptibility. The objective of the current study was to empirically investigate the relationships between visuospatial ability factors and motion sickness susceptibility. Method: Fifty young adults (25 males and 25 females) were recruited for this study. Each participant was evaluated in motion sickness susceptibility and visuospatial ability. The Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire-Short Form (MSSQ-S) was employed for the motion sickness susceptibility evaluation. The ETS kit of Factor-referenced Cognitive tests (1976 Edition) was used for the evaluation of visuospatial ability. It evaluates an individual’s visuospatial ability in its five major components: Spatial Visualization (VZ), Spatial Relations (SR), Closure Speed (CS), Flexibility of Closure (CF), Perceptual Speed (P). The participants were divided into three motion sickness susceptibility groups (Low, Mid, and High). For each gender repeated-measures analyses of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc pairwise comparisons were conducted to compare the three motion sickness susceptibility groups in each of the five visuospatial ability test scores. Results: For each gender ANOVA and post-hoc pairwise comparisons revealed significant differences among the Motion Sickness Susceptibility groups. The spatial visualization and spatial relation scores were positively correlated with the motion sickness susceptibility score. The total score of the visuospatial ability test was significantly higher in the low motion sickness susceptibility group compared to the high motion sickness susceptibility group. However, there was no significant gender differences in the visuospatial ability test score and the Percentile score MSSQ-S. Percentile score MSSQ-S was found to be associated with the spatial visualization, spatial relation scores and perceptual speed of the ETS kit of Factor-referenced Cognitive tests but not with gender. Conclusion: This study has revealed that motion sickness susceptibility was significantly and positively correlated with not all but part of the visuospatial ability factors (Spatial Visualization, Spatial Relation, and Perceptual Speed). This finding implies that motion sickness is affected by both visual information process speed and mental manipulation ability. However, further research is needed to investigate possible causality relationships between the visuospatial ability factors and motion sickness susceptibility. Application: This research identified the human visuospatial ability factors

Periodic Replacement of a System Subject to Shocks under Random Operating Horizon

Vol.23 No.4

This paper presents a periodic replacement policy for a system subject to shocks when the system is operating for a finite random horizon. The system is subject to shocks during operation, and each shock causes downgrading of the system performance and makes it more expensive to run by the additional running cost. Shocks arrive according to a nonhomogeneous or a renewal process, and we develop periodic replacement policies under a finite random operating horizon. The optimum periodic replacement interval which minimizes the total operating cost during the horizon is found. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the results.

A Supervisory Control Algorithm for a Series Hybrid Vehicle With Multiple Energy Sources

Youngkwan Ko,Jeeho Lee,Hyeongcheol Lee IEEE 2015 IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology VT Vol.64 No.11

This paper presents a new power distribution strategy (PDS) for a series electric hybrid vehicle (SHEV) in the sense of minimizing fuel usage. The target vehicle has three energy sources, i.e., an engine and generator set (EGS), a battery, and an ultracapacitor, and two traction motors for the front and rear wheels. A two-step PDS based on the real-time optimization technique is proposed to distribute the demand power among three energy sources. Several existing PDSs, such as the thermostat strategy and the power-follower strategy, are modified and applied to be compared with the proposed strategy. An optimal torque distribution strategy between front and rear traction motors is also proposed to minimize the electric energy consumption and to further improve fuel economy. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategies.

Vol.28 No.1

PB products served by large-scare distributors may have a positive effect on consumer welfare and market competition because their distribution gives comsumer opportunities to purchase good quality products with competitive prices. However, large-scale distributors can enhance their superior bargaining power as a buyer to upstream suppliers by selling their PB products and forming rivalry, and thus PB products distribution by large-scale distributors might negatively influence in terms of consumer welfare and fair trade. This paper investigated possible regulatory measures in enforcing fair trade act against the abuse of superior buyer power of large-scale distributors in relation to their PB products delivery by examining the regulations of current acts and their limits. The paper suggests that it is desirable for the competition authority to consider whether large-scale distributors distribute their own PB products or not and the shares of them to overall sales of large-scale distributors, etc. when it determines the abuse of market dominance of large-scale distributors as a buyer to upstream suppliers, anticompetitive or the unfair trade conducts to upstream manufacturers producing NB products competing their PB products.

Vol.22 No.2

E-commerce is growing quickly because of its advantages in terms of the purchase convenience, diversity of available products, and their price competitiveness. However, manufacturers supplying their products with distributors often restrict their distributors not to sale their products through internet platforms, and thus this practice can cause some problems in terms of competition or fair trade law. In particular, this problematic practice has become an emerging issue between manufacturers and distributors under the selective distribution system. There are limits of researches and discussions on the selective distribution system in Korea, but conflicts regarding selection of distributors by manufacturers and their vertical distributive restrictions through third-party online platform by their selected distributors have been dealt in terms of competition law in EU or its member states. In European region, the selective distribution system has been recognized as a legal distributional system if it meets three requirements which were suggested by the ECJ in the case of Metro/SABA. In particular, the characteristics of products in problem is critical in determining the legality of the selective distribution system. And its judgement of Pierre Fabre is a seminal case that dealt with the legality of restricting distributors’ sales of products on the Internet by suppliers in EU. The state of art seminal case focusing on the problematic practice regarding distributive restriction using the third-party internet platform by suppliers is a Coty judgement by ECJ, which provide us with important implications in terms of enforcing Fair Trade Law in Korea. In Korea, recently, there exist some cases of the suppliers’ problematic practice banning distributors’ sales through the third-party internet platform, and one of them was ruled by the supreme court of Korea. This paper investigated the seminal case laws on the selective distribution as well as the vertical restriction of internet distribution of products by suppliers in EU and its member states, and then discussed the rulings in Korea and its limits in terms of effective and desirable enforcement of Fair Trade Law in Korea by comparative analysis of these rulings in Korea and EU. In addition, this paper discussed how to effectively regulate the vertical distributional restriction of products sales through the third-party internet platforms under Korean Fair Trade Law.
