Evaluation of usefulness of smart device-based testing: a survey study of Korean medical students

Purpose: This study aims to understand the characteristics of smart device-based testing (SBT) by comparing the typical characteristics of students’ satisfaction with SBT, its usefulness, advantages, and disadvantages when compared with existing testing methods. Methods: A total of 250 students from the first to third year were selected as the final targets of the study and the questionnaire was developed by faculty members who participated in the survey from the start of the SBT. The total number of questions is 12, and the questionnaire used a 4-point scale. The data obtained were analyzed using the IBM SPSS ver. 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, USA). Results: Answers to the “satisfaction with SBT” were generally negative, while answers to the “usefulness of SBT” were generally positive. There was no difference in satisfaction across gender and smart device ownership, whereas there were significant differences across years. With reference to the usefulness of SBT, students responded positively, while about the overall configuration and completeness of SBT, students responded negatively. Students also seemed to show a greater preference toward the pencil-paper test. Conclusion: On the other hand, students generally thought that SBT helped to assess medical knowledge better and was a more objective method of knowledge assessment than a pencil-paper test. We believe that students preferred the traditional paper-pencil test due to their unfamiliarity with SBT. We believe that an appropriate and careful remedy for drawbacks of the SBT will have a significant impact in the accumulation of actual clinical knowledge and in the improvement of practical skills for medical students.
실천공동체의 사회적 네트워크, 지식공유, 학습전이간의 구조적 관계 분석

본 연구의 목적은 기업에서 운영하고 있는 실천공동체의 사회적 네트워크를 관계밀도와 중심화로 구체화하고 이들 변수와 지식공유 및 학습전이간의 구조적 관계를 실증적으로 분석하는 것이다. 특히 사회적 네트워크가 지식공유와 학습전이에 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 것뿐만 아니라 지식공유를 통하여 학습전이에 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 국내 A보험사의 실천공동체 구성원을 조사대상으로 설정하였다. 설문조사를 통하여 실증자료가 수집되었으며, 최종분석에는 총 82개 실천공동체에서 수집된 704부의 설문지가 활용되었다. 구조방정식 모형 분석을 활용하였으며, 통계분석을 위하여 SPSS 12.0 프로그램과 LISREL 8.30 프로그램이 사용되었다. 분석결과, 관계밀도와 중심화는 각각 지식공유 및 학습전이에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 관계밀도와 중심화는 학습전이에 지식공유를 통하여 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 실천공동체의 중요한 성과인 구성원간의 지식공유와 이를 현업에 적용하는 학습전이에 실천공동체 구성원간의 사회적 네트워크가 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 결과가 제시되었다. 특히 중심화의 경우 다른 경로계수에 비하여 학습전이에 가장 강한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 분석결과를 통해 선행연구에 기초한 논의 및 시사점 그리고 연구의 한계점이 제시되었다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relations among social networks, knowledge sharing, and learning transfer in community of practices. Especially, based on the literatures review researcher hypothesized that social networks in community of practices have the effects on knowledge sharing and learning transfer directly and indirectly. Knowledge sharing was hypothesized to play a role as mediating variable. And social networks were measured by relation density and centrality. Data were obtained from 704 employees of community of practices in A insurance company and were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 and LISREL 8.30. The findings were as follows. First, relation density and centrality showed the effects on knowledge sharing, and learning transfer directly. Second, relation density and centrality showed the indirect effects on learning transfer through knowledge sharing. Third, especially centrality showed the most powerful effect on learning transfer. Fourth, the structural equation model showed acceptable level of model fit indexes. Based on the results, some implications and limits of this study were discussed.
