Risk of Traumatic Intracranial Hemorrhage From Low-Energy Falls in the Oldest-Old Patients

Background: The population of individuals classified as oldest-old (aged ≥85 years) has increased rapidly in recent years. The rates of morbidity from chronic diseases and physical dependence tend to be higher in the oldest-old compared with individuals classified as young-to-middle-old (aged 65-84 years). Therefore, the classification and evaluation of traumatic injuries in the oldest-old group are necessary. Herein we focused on the risk of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage from low-energy falls in older patients. Methods: Patient medical records from the Emergency Department after low-energy falls that occurred between November 2014 and April 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into an older group (aged ≥65 years) and an adult group (aged 18-64 years); the older group was subdivided into the oldest-old group (aged ≥85 years) and a young-to-middle-old group (aged 65-84 years). The rate of intracranial hemorrhage and related factors were also investigated. Results: The older group had a greater risk of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage than the adult group (20% vs. 12.6%, p=0.019). Furthermore, more cases of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage were found in the oldest-old group than in the young-to-middle-old group (37.5% vs. 18.0%, p=0.024). Similarly, the risk of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage in the oldest-old was higher than in the young-to-middle-old group (p=0.032). Conclusion: The risk of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage from low-energy falls in the oldest-old patients was higher than in the young-to-middleold patients. Therefore, physicians need to pay particular attention to oldest-old patients, even to those with mental integrity and without neurological deficits.

We investigated the influence of testis on the gender identity in late adolescent Korean males dwelling in a community. Of 27,202 men aged 20 years dwelling in the community, 2,700 men were randomly selected at a 10.0% sampling fraction. A total of 2,080 men who agreed to participate in the study and all volunteers underwent a standard evaluation. For the evaluation of influences of testis on the gender identity, we used the Bem Sex Role Inventory in the subjects who had testis torsion, testis injury of cryptorchidism as well as with no testicular disease. They were categorized as group 1; normal testis size, group 2; testis atrophy, and group 3; no testis in the scrotum. The median masculinity scores of group 1, 2 and 3 were not significantly different (group 1; 4.3 [3.65.0], group 2; 3.9 [3.1-4.5] and group 3; 4.6 [4.0-5.1], p=0.065). Regarding the femininity score, there were no differences among groups (group 1; 4.6 [4.0-5.1] versus group 2; 4.5 [3.9-4.8] and group 3; 4.6 [4.2-4.9], p=0.609). In group 3, the masculinity and femininity scores were not also different between of men underwent orchiectomy and did not undergo correction of cryptorchidism. We did not find the impact of testis on gender identity in our cohort. Additional research is needed to clarify the underlying psychopathology involved.

Su-young Cheon is one of the severely polluted streams by domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. A study was carried out at downstream of Su-young Cheon in order to evaluate the effect of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater on water quality. The range and mean values of water quality in Won-Dong bridge were as follows: DO were 0.6-5.7mg/l and 3.82mg/l. SS were 12-79mg/l and 38.4mg/l. BOD 1.6-5.1mg/l, 3.17mg/l, COD 22.4-71mg/l, 39.6mg/l, NH4-N 0.28-1.49mg/l, 2.33mg/l, T-N 0.95-3.92mg/l, 1.76mg/l. In case of T-P were 0.14-0.77mg/l and 0.21mg/l. The range and mean values of water quality in Minrak bridge were as follows: DO were 3.3-5.6mg/l and 4.26mg/l. SS were 11-96mg/l and 53.7mg/l. BOD 0.8-4.7mg/l 2.75mg/l, COD 20-41mg/l, 29.6mg/l, NH4-N 0.02-1.98mg/l, 0.58mg/l, T-N 0.64-2.6mg/l, 1.76mg/l. In case of T-P were 0.12-0.88mg/l and 0.37mg/l.

This study applies the proposed conceptual model for the land use suitability analysis. The study area is Young-In city which is one of the new housing development concentrated regions in the Seoul Metropolitan area. The purpose of this study is to compare the residential planning of the Yong-In City Master Plan (2001) with the proposed conceptual model application. The comparison is based on as follows: 3 methods (simple overlay method; linear standardization and AHP; Fuzzy and AHP) with 4 alternatives (city structural efficiency; environmentally sound development; and equal growth) and their conflict resolutions. The results are slightly different from each other; and very hard to conclude which method is superior. Rather, we may insist on that land use suitability analysis in Yong-In City Master Plan needs to be based on a well guided procedural model. The analysis of the plan is too naive to draw a future plan of the citizens. This may be the same in many other plans, but we need to scrutinize this subject and develop very practical and procedural analysis guidelines and manuals in order to have more rational plans.

The differences of the liver scintigraphic features between postnecrotic and nonpostnecrotic liver cirrhosis were studied for 69 patients. Degrees of mottling and splenomegaly were no different between two groups but shrinked form was more frequent finding in postnecrotic type(23:10), and normal shape & enlarged left lobe with shrinked right lobe were relatively dominant in non-postnecrotic group(15:6, 10:2). Grade of extrahepatic uptake of ^99mTc-tin colloid was significantly higher in Child-Pugh B & C group than A group(p<0.05), but there was no difference between postnecrotic and non-postnecrotic groups. These will be important results on the dicision for the presence of cirrhosis according to the variable causes.
감마선(^60Co) 조사에 의한 항진균 세균의 돌연변이체 유도

항진균 세균의 특성 및 기능변화 가능성을 조사하기 위하여 버섯폐배지, 온천수, 해조류 및 삼림토양으로부터 식물병원성 진균에 대한 8 종의 항진균 활성 균주를 분리하였고 감마선(^60Co)을 이용하여 LD_95 에 돌연변이체를 유도하였다. Bactllus circulans K1, Burkholderia gladioli K4와 Bacillussubtilis YSl은 12 종의 식물병원성 진균에 대go 항진균 활성을 보였다. 이들 균주의 방사선감수성 조사결과 B. gladioliK4는 감마선에 대한 높은 감수성을 보였으며, D_10 값은 0.11kGy 였다. 감마선에 의해 유도된 Kl-1004와 YSl-1009는Botryosphaeria dothidea에 대해 항진균 활성이 증가되었다. B.subtilis YS1의 돌연변이체인 YSl-1006과 YS1-1009는 tebuconazol과 copper hydroxide에 대해 농약 저항성을 나타냈다. SAR535, SAR5108 과 SAR5l18 돌연변이체는 야생형 균주인 Streptomyces sp. SAR01에 비해 5 종의 식물병원성 진균에 대해 항진균 활성이 없었다. 연구결과, 방사선을 이용하여 다양한 기능의 돌연변이체 유도가 가능하였다. 이를 이용하여 항진균 활성 관련 유전자 연구 및 균주개량이 가능할 것으로 사료된다. In order to evaluate the antifungal activity of bacteria against plant pathogenic fungi, 8 bacteria were isolated from mushroom compost, hot spring, seaweed, and forest soil and mutants from them were induced by LD_(95) gamma radiadon(^(60)Co). Bacillus circuluns K1, Burkholderia gladioli K4 and Bacillus subtilis YS1 showed wide antifungal spectrum against 12 kinds of plant pathogenic fungi. From the radiation sensitivity test, R gladioli K4 was very sensitive to gamma radiation and its D_(10) value was 0.11 kGy. Antifungal activities of B. circulans K1-1004 and B. subtilis YS1-1009, which were induced by the radiation of ^(60)Co increased against Botryosphaeria dothidea. The mutant strains, B. subtilis YS1-1006 and B. subtilis YS1-1009 were resistant to tebuconazole and copper hydroxide. SAR535, SAR5108, and SAR5118 mutated from Streptomyces sp. SAR01 were antifungal activity deficient mutants against 5 kinds of plant pathogenic fungi compared to wild strain, so that they could be supposed to be model strains for studying antifungal mechanism. It is suggested that various functional types of mutants could be induced by gamma radiation and applied usefully.

Prediction of thrapeutic response to radioiodine in Graves' disease is poorly understood. Although thyrotropin binding inhibitor immunoglobulin(TBII) level is a strong index for relapse after antithyroid drug medication, conflicting results are reported regarding its prognostic significance in Graves' disease treated with RAI. This study is dengned to evaluate possible relationship between post-treatment hypothyroidism and TBII in Graves' disease treated with RAI. Fourty two patient with Graves' disease after radioiodine treatment were studied retrospectively. The subject were divided into hypothyroid group and euthyroid or hyperthyroid group. We evaluated the association of hypothyroidism and TBII with radioiodine treatment dose. The mean age of hypothyroid group was 48±11 years and euthyroid or hyperthyroid group was 47±12 years. There was no difference in two groups. And there was no significant difference in post- treatment TBII between two groups(49.9±28.5%, 29.9±14.3%, p-value >0.05). The treatment-dose had no influence on post-treatment thyroid state. Euthyroid or hyperthyroid group was done with 13.6±6.9mCi and hypothyroid group was 17.0±10.4mCi(p-value > 0.05). TBII had no prognostic significance on long-term hypothyrodism in Graves' disease treated with radioiodine. And, treatment-dose had no influence on post-treatment thyroid state.

For more effective intraperitoneal chemotherapy, the authers made 5-fluorouracil-polyglycolic acid composite disks(FU-PGA disks) with 5-fluorouracil and polyglycolic acid, a biodegradable polymer. We inserted the FU-PGA disk into the peritoneal cavites of Sprague-Dawley male rats, the control and three experimental groups; one FU-PGA disk insert group(300mg/kg), two FU-PGA disk insert group(600mg/kg), and three FU-PGA disk insert group(900mg/kg). The control group received a similar number of PGA disk inserts. A pharmacokinetic study was performed to measure the 5-fluorouracil concentration in the peritoneal fluid, blood, and tissues(liver, kidney and heart) at 24 hours, 72hours and 168 hours after insertion of the FU-PGA disk. Light and electron microscopic studies were done. The results were as follows: 1) The number of white blood cells and platelets decreased after FU-PGA insertion. The degree was proportional to the duration and amounts inserted. The change in the number of red blood cells varied slightly. 2) Light microscopically, slight changes were noted at 168 hours in the 3 disk insert group (900mg/kg). Mild fatty change and hepatocyte degeneration around the central veins of the liver were noted, with vacuolar degeneration in the proximal convoluted tubules of the kidney. 3) Electron microscopically,the liver showed focal increases of lipid droplets in the hepatocytes, and irregular nuclear membrane with focal nucleolar segregation of the fibrillar and granular elements. Also the double membranous structure of the hepatocytes and Kupffer cells was widened with bleb formation. The kidney showed wide separation of the nuclear double membrane in the proximal convoluted tubular cells and mesangial cells, with vacuolation and myelin figure formation in the mitochondria of the proximal convoluted tubular cells, at 72 hours and 168 hours in the 2 to 3 FU-PGA insert groups. The heart showed focal loss of cristae,vacuolation and myelin figure formation in the mitochondria of the 2 to 3 FU-PGA insert groups. In conclusion, despite the large amont of FU-PGA inserted, the histopathological changes in the liver, kidney and heart were slight, and consonant with the very low amount of 5-fluorouracil concentrations detected in the liver, kidney and heart. The above results suggest that the FU-PGA composite can serve as a new device for releasing drugs in a controlled manner and easily targeted to intraperitoneal organs. This device can improve the efficacy of intraperitoneal chemotherapy for gastric cancer.
MgCl₂溶液內에서 STS 304 HP Stainless Steel 熔接部의 破壞擧動에 對한 硏究

This paper is based on an experiment analysing the stress corrosion cracking behaviour of welding specimens compared to that of non-welding specimens of STS 304 HP stainless steel in corrosion solution. As a corrosion condition, stainless steel has been known to be the most fragile in a solution of 42% MgCl₂heated to the boiling point, therefore the experiment was carried out in this condition. The experiment was carried out with argon gas TIG welding specimens and non-welding ones made of stainless steel plates, thickness 2mm, by tensile force. At this time, the tensile force was taken to be the value of the yield strength of the tensile test specimens divided by the safety factor of 3.0 to 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0. In this paper, the relations between Time of Initial Crack, Time of Failure, Time of Final Fracture and Crack Propagation Length were investigated and then plotted. Furthermore, the relations between Stress Intensity Factor K proposed by Irwin and the Time of Initial Crack, the Time of Failure, the Time of Final Fracture were calculated and plotted. At the last, all the relations plotted were expressed to normal equations by computer, and the equations were used to analyse the data obtained in the experiment. The conclusions obtained in this study are as follows: 1. Welding materials, compared with non-welding ones, as the Time of Initial Crack, the Time of Failure, and the Time of Final Fracture were generally very fast, appeared to be a phenomenon of unstable brittleness fracture. 2. Non-welding materials, compared with welding ones, as the safety factor was larger or the working stress was smaller, appeared to be a phenomenon that the longer had had greater durability. Therefor, welding materials must be considered enough to be used in heate affected and stress corrosion atmosphere. 3.
