Background/Aims: Few studies have attempted to interpret unusually high predicted pulmonary function test results. This study aimed to investigate the demographic features of patients with an unusually high predicted pulmonary function. Methods: The demographic data of subjects who underwent pulmonary function testing at a tertiary referral hospital during between January 2011 and December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Of the 68,693 included patients, 55 (0.08%) had a percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second or forced vital capacity ≥ 140%. These patients had a relatively older median age (72 years vs. 54 years, p < 0.001), female predominance (65.5% vs. 42.5%, p = 0.001), lower body weight (52.5 kg vs. 64.5 kg, p < 0.001) and shorter height (148.4 cm vs. 164.2 cm, p < 0.001). Furthermore, 6.1% of women older than 80 years with weight < 50 kg and height < 150 cm had a high predicted pulmonary function. Conclusions: A high predicted pulmonary function is not rare among elderly subjects with a small body size. Physicians should consider the demographics of the examinees, especially those of minority populations, particularly as the test results might be determined using an incorrect reference equation.

This paper presents Meta-Blocks, a customizable VR controller which provides kinesthetic haptic feedback. By applying the repulsive force of electromagnets and permanent magnets to the module-typed controller, it gives users an immersive experience in a VR environment. Also, by diversifying the size of the holder, a wide range of ages of users can play with it. We confirmed the result by conducting quantitative and qualitative evaluations. This paper contributes in the sense of utilizing magnetic force which is cost-efficient, and opening for various users with different hand sizes.

Emotional eating is one of critical factors hindering the success of weight management. Even though people with emotional-eating behavior pattern are vulnerable to physical and psychological diseases such as obesity and depression, they tend to rarely seek professional assistance before they are in serious condition. Thus, it is challenging to give appropriate intervention or feedback to people with emotional eating behavior. However, some emotional eaters share their experiences and seek help in online community. We have explored the emotional eating (EE) pattern in /r/loseit online community, which is one of the sub-communities of Reddit, sharing information or experiences related to weight management such as food intake, exercise, medication, etc. Latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) was used for multi-dimensional topic modeling of the EE posts and comments. Based on the analysis, we are going to draw design implications to develop emotional eating feedback bot (EEF bot) which can give on-time and efficient feedback to emotional eaters.

Objective We aimed to investigate the effect of nursing professionals’ resilience on their mental health, work-related stress, and anxiety in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We conducted an online survey in the Asan Medical Center and Ulsan University Hospital, South Korea. We extracted data of 824 nursing professionals who consented to participate, including demographic variables and the Stress and Anxiety to Viral Epidem-ics-9 (SAVE-9), PHQ-9, GAD-7, and Brief Resilience Scale scores. Results Resilience was negatively correlated with Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) (rho=-0.23), Generalized Anxiety Scale-7 items (GAD-7) (rho=-0.25), Stress and Anxiety to Viral Epidem-ics-6 items (SAVE-6) (rho=-0.15), and Stress And anxiety to Viral Epidem-ics-3 items (SAVE-3) (rho=-0.13, all, p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis adjusting age, marital status, and years of employment revealed that high level of general anxiety [adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=1.40, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.31–1.50], work-related stress during viral epidemics (aOR=1.16, 95% CI=1.03–1.29), and a low level of resilience (aOR=0.91, 95% CI=0.85–0.97) were expecting variables for the depression of healthcare workers. Conclusion Nursing professionals’ level of resilience may be associated with low level of work-related stress and anxiety induced by a viral epidemic. We need to explore further the possibility of resilience as coping strategy of healthcare workers in this pandemic era. Psychiatry Investig 2021;18(4):357-363
