In this paper, we propose a CAD (Computer aided diagnosis) system to analyze the RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and osteoporosis by using image processing techniques from the CR images. To analyze the RA, we develop a segmentation method for phalanges in CR Image by use of DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) for detection of temporal change. The temporal change is detected using the difference image between previous image and current one. The DCT is performed to emphasize the edge of the difference image. Finally, the phalanges are extracted by performing Snakes. The primary objective of this study is to segment phalanges by making temporal subtraction images. We apply our proposed technique to eight cases of CR images and satisfactory segmentation results are achieved. A new index that diagnoses the progress level of the disease of phalanges can be offered as a second opinion.
Study on Effectiveness of Active Safety Devices on Low Friction Road Using Driving Simulator
Yoshimichi Terashima,Yuya Ishizaki,Ryuzo Hayashi,Pongsathorn Raksincharoensak,Masao Nagai 한국자동차공학회 2008 한국자동차공학회 Symposium Vol.2008 No.9
In recent years, various active safety devices have been developed for the prevention of accidents such as rear-end collision and skidding. The representative device for the collision prevention is the forward collision warning system, and the one for the stability control is the direct yaw-moment control (DYC) system using distributed braking forces. In this study, we aim to evaluate the performance of these devices by experiments using driving simulator reconducting critical and dangerous driving situations. Regarding the forward collision warning system, we propose a new algorithm of warning system adapted to road condition, and conduct experiments to verify its effectiveness with the driving simulator. The results of the experiment indicate that the proposed system is more effective than the conventional system. Regarding the DYC, we develop a DYC system for the driving simulator to verify the effectiveness of DYC on low friction road, including human driver in the closed-loop evaluation. The DYC algorithm is designed by model-matching control method. From the results of the experiment of obstacle avoidance, it reveals that the DYC system is very effective to stabilize the vehicle on low friction road.
Role of Gap Junctions in the Endothelium-Dependent Hyperpolarization of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells
Yoshimichi Yamamoto,Megan F. Klemm,Hikaru Hashitani,Richard J. Lang,Tsuyoshi Soji.,Hikaru Suzuki 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2001 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.5 No.1
<P> Hyperpolarization of arterial smooth muscle by acetylcholine is considered to be produced by the release of an unidentified chemical substance, an endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF). Several chemicals have been proposed as the candidate for EDHF. However, none of them fulfil completely the nature and property of EDHF. Ultrastructural observation with electron microscope reveals that in some arteries, gap junctions are formed between endothelial and smooth muscle cells. In small arterioles, injection of gap junction permeable dyes into an endothelial cell results in a distribution of the dye to surrounding cells including smooth muscle cells. These observations allow the speculation that myoendothelial gap junctions may have a functional significance. Simultaneous measurement of the electrical responses in both endothelial and smooth muscle cells using the double patch clamp method demonstrates that these two cell types are indeed electrically coupled, indicating that they behave as a functional syncytium. The EDHF-induced hyperpolarization is produced by an activation of Ca2-sensitive K-channels that are inhibited by charybdotoxin and apamin. Agonists that release EDHF increase [Ca2]i in endothelial cells but not in smooth muscle cells. Inhibition of gap junctions with chemical agents abolishes the agonist- induced hyperpolarization in smooth muscle cells but not in endothelial cells. All these observations can be explained if EDHF is an electrotonic signal propagating from endothelium to smooth muscle cells through gap junctions.

Social maps created by Kurasawa (1986) reveal an intriguing relationship between space, social stratification, and crime in Tokyo. Although people with lower socioeconomic status concentrate in the eastern area, the crime rate is not necessarily high in the area; rather, it seems to be randomly distributed over Tokyo. Conventional sociological knowledge tells us that the crime rate negatively correlates with socioeconomic status, which is not the case in Tokyo. How can we explain this puzzle? Social capital is the key to solving it. Although they are in lower socioeconomic status, people in the eastern area are mainly self-employed and have lived in the same residence for many years. Thus they have established rich social capital, which has prevented the rise in the crime rate. This finding implies that space and social stratification co-evolve not in a vacuum but in the socio-historical context.
