Addressing User Engagement in Social Media Platforms with Cultural Differences Based on Hofstede’s Dimensions

This paper proposes the presence and importance of cultural differences to address user engagement in worldwide social media platforms. Based on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, this paper addresses their new meanings in the context of user engagement in social media. Our propositions address two research questions: (1) how do cultural dimensions, displayed on social media platforms, differ across national cultures?; (2) what different preferences the social media platforms have in terms of which cultural dimensions promote or suppress user engagement? User engagement in social media platforms is explained by the cultural differences in terms of the four cultural dimensions: individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, and masculinity vs. femininity. Implications are also discussed for research and practice.

As the global climate change becomes substantial, desire to improve power system efficiency increases gradually. Power generation by utilizing the waste heat of gas turbine exhaust flow is another increasing market. Supercritical CO₂ cycle is gaining interests with several benefits: (1) high efficiency in the mild turbine inlet temperature range (450-650℃), (2) simple layout configuration and (3) small foot print coupled with compact heat exchangers and turbomachineries. On and off-design performance of supercritical CO₂ power system based on the component design variables is discussed in this paper. Preliminary design of supercritical CO₂ recuperated layout to make use of the waste heat from gas turbine (LM-2500) exhaust flow is designed and the corresponding turbomachineries and heat exchangers are designed. The compressor inlet condition is designed close to the critical point to improve system efficiency due to low compression work. Printed Circuit Heat Exchangers (PCHE) are designed for the S-CO₂ system because it can operate under high temperature and pressure condition. Radial turbomachineries design parameter and performance maps are generated from in-house code. Based on preliminary component design parameters, off-design performance is analyzed for the condition of cooling water temperature change. As cooling temperature increases, overall system mass flow rate and turbine power decreases, while the compression work increases.

영화 “하울의 움직이는 성”에 등장한 라이트모티프의 활용에 대한 음악적 어법 분석

The soundtrack in the movie is closely related to the movie's universe, especially the characters. This study examined the leitmotif of Studio Ghibli's “Howl's Moving Castle” and analyzed how the leitmotif related to the narrative of the film are used throughout the film. Sophie, the maini character, is cursed from an ordinary 18-year-old girl and instantly transforms into a 90-year-old grandmother. Hisaishi Joe accepts the director's order to make music consistent so that movie audiences can feel the same as Sophie, breaking the idea that the main theme should not exceed one-third of the total movie music, and actively utilizes the leitmotif in the movies frequently. As a result, in “Howl's Moving Castle”, the main theme appears in 18 out of 33 songs. By analyzing how the leitmotif related to characters in video works with narratives are used, it is hoped that in addition to orchestra-based classical instruments, the leitmotif using various sounds, including electronic instruments and ambiance sounds, can be used more diversely in various video media. 영화에서의 사운드트랙은 영화의 세계관, 특히 인물들과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 본 연구는 스튜디오지브리의 “하울의 움직이는 성”에 등장한 라이트모티프를 살펴보고, 영화의 내러티브와 관련한 라이트모티프가 영화의 전반에 걸쳐 어떻게 활용되는지를 분석하였다. 주인공인 소피는 평범한 18세 소녀에서 저주에 걸려 단숨에 90세 할머니로 바뀌게 된다. 히사이시 조는 영화를 보는 관객들도 소피와 같은마음을 가질 수 있도록 음악을 일관되게 해 달라는 감독의 주문을 수용하여 메인 테마가 전체 영화음악의 3분의 1을 넘기면 안 된다는 생각을 깨고 영화 여러 곳에 라이트모티프를 적극 활용한다. 그 결과 “하울의 움직이는 성”에서는 전체 33곡 가운데 18곡에 메인 테마가 등장하는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 서사를 가진 영상 작품에서 등장하는 인물들과 관련한 라이트모티프가 어떻게 활용되는지를 분석하여오케스트라에 기반한 클래식 악기 이외에도 전자악기와 엠비언스 사운드를 비롯한 다양한 소리를 활용한 라이트모티프가 여러 영상매체들에서 더 다양하게 활용될 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

EDM에서 나타나는 라틴 아메리카 리듬 표현 기법 연구

The purpose of this study is to analyze Latin American rhythm expression techniques in EDM, explore the impact of these expressions on the future music industry, and present a new perspective on musical creativity. Prior to the study, a basic study was conducted to explore the impact of the times according to the historical flow of each genre. For in-depth research, the scope was limited to works released after 2010, which are evaluated as the heyday of EDM, and cases showing the rhythmic characteristics of Latin America were selected by referring to articles and introductions from distributors. As a result of analyzing the instruments and rhythms applied in the works selected to draw conclusions, new works were formed by introducing various traditional instruments, samba, reggae-like rhythms, and 'Call And Response' playing methods, and it was found that these experiments could contribute to the development of the future music industry by creating new experiences and expanding the diversity of music. 본 연구의 목적은 EDM에서 나타나는 라틴 아메리카의 리듬 표현 기법에 대해 분석하여, 이러한 표현이 미래의 음악 산업에 미치는 영향에 대해 탐구하고, 음악적 창의성에 대한 새로운 관점을 제시하기위함에 있다. 연구의 진행에 앞서, EDM과 라틴 아메리카의 이해를 돕기 위해 각각의 역사적 흐름에따른 시대적 상황이 각 음악 장르에 미친 영향을 탐구하는 기초 연구를 실시하였다. 보다 심층적인 연구를 위해 연구의 시대적 범위를 EDM의 전성기로 평가되는 시기인, 2010년 이후에 발매된 작품으로한정하였으며, 뉴스 기사 및 유통사의 음원 소개 글을 참고하여 라틴 아메리카의 리듬적 특성이 두드러진 사례를 선정하였다. 본 연구의 결론 도출을 위해 논자가 선정한 작품에서 응용된 라틴 아메리카의악기와 리듬을 분석한 결과, 각 작품에서 다양한 전통 악기와 삼바, 레게와 같은 리듬과, 'Call And Response' 연주 방식이 도입되어 새로운 작품이 형성되었고, 이러한 실험은 보다 새로운 음악적 경험을 창출함과 동시에, 음악의 다양성을 확장해 미래 음악 산업의 발전에 기여할 수 있음을 확인 할 수있었다.

빌 에반스(Bill Evans)의 “We Will Meet Again” 솔로 피아노에 나타난 아포지아투라와 폴리코드에 관한 연구

본 연구는 빌 에반스의 화성적 기법 중 화성적인 확장과 긴장이 가장 두드러지게 나타나는 아포지아투라와 폴리코드를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이 두 개의 기법은 화성적으로 극적인 긴장감을 유도하고 해결시키는 빌 에반스의 특징적인 화성 진행이다. 빌 에반스의 다른 개성적인 화성 기법들도 많지만, 위의두 기법은 그가 클래식 음악으로부터 수혜를 받아 재즈 피아노까지 뿌리를 내린 기법이기에 모든 재즈화성 발전의 초석이 되었다. 아포지아투라는 빌 에반스가 비화성음들의 다성부적 사용을 통해 어떠한방식으로 화성적 긴장과 해결을 유도하였는지에 대하여 알아볼 수 있었다. 폴리코드는 크게 다이아토닉스케일과 변형된 스케일에서 구성되는 두 가지 폴리코드로 나누어 분석하였으며, 화성적 긴장도와 악곡의 흐름에 따라 그가 어떠한 방식으로 다양한 폴리코드를 사용했는지 연구하였다. 본 연구에서는 빌 에반스의 “We Will Meet Again” 솔로 피아노 곡을 통해 조성 음악에서의 화성 확장이 어떻게 이루어졌으며, 빌 에반스가 이 기법들을 어떻게 연주에서 사용하여 그만의 화성들을 구현하고 구체화하였는지에대해 살펴볼 수 있었다. This study analyzes the most prominent manifestations of harmonic expansion and tension in Bill Evans’ harmonic techniques, focusing on appoggiatura and polychords. These two techniques represent Evans’ characteristic harmonic progressions that dramatically induce and resolve tension. While Evans employs numerous other idiosyncratic harmonic techniques, these two serve as cornerstones of all Jazz harmonic development, rooted in his assimilation of classical music into Jazz piano. Appoggiatura elucidates Evans’ method of inducing harmonic tension and resolution through the polyphonic use of non-harmonic tones. Polychord is dissected into two categories: one comprising diatonic scales and the other involving altered scales. The study explores how Evans employed diverse Polychords based on harmonic tension and the flow of the musical piece. Through the analysis of Bill Evans’ solo piano composition “We Will Meet Again”, this research examines how harmonic expansion unfolds in compositional music and elucidates how Evans employed these techniques in his performances to actualize and crystallize his unique harmonies.

주파수 스펙트럼 시각화 기술을 이용한 피아노 연주법 분석 연구 : 20세기 후반 이후 연구를 중심으로

컴퓨터 기술 및 소프트웨어 엔지니어링의 발달에 따라 음악 평가의 시각화는 최근 몇 년 사이 대중적인 연구 분야가 되었다. 음악 시각화의 주요 장점들로는 음악적 특징들, 연주자의 기술에 대한 직접적인 입증과 세부적인 비교와 분석을 가능하게 하는 것이 있으며, 이를 통해 음악 연주에 대해 더욱 포괄적으로 이해하게 한다. 음악 시각화의 적용은 다양한 영역으로 확장되고 있는데 E-music 작곡, 음악 교육과 연주 평가의 간소화, 고차원 에니메이션 상품의 발생 등이 있다. 음악 시각화의 적용과 방법론에 대한 여러 연구자들에 의해 진행된 연구들 역시 많이 있다. 반면, 가장 중요하고 대중적인 현악기 중 하나인 피아노는 음악과 관련된 연구에서 항상 주요한 위치를 차지해 왔으며, 시각화 연구 역시 예외가 아니다. 본 연구에서는 피아노 연주의 시각화에 대해 진행된 연구들에 대해 간략히 요약하여 소개하고자 한다. 음악 시각화가 새로운 도구로 받아들여지고 있으므로, 이의 발전 과정에 대해 우선적으로 검토하고자 한다. 다음으로 여러 다른 연구자들에 의해 제안된 피아노 연주의 시각화와 관련된 방법론들과 도구들을 비교하고 서로 다른 특징들에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 피아노 연주 시각화의 결과물들에 대한 예들을 살펴보고, 실제적인 효과들에 대해 논의할 것이다. 연주 시각화가 발전 과정의 과도기에 있는 만큼 최근의 연구가 가지는 제한점들에 대해서 논의하고자 한다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 음악 연구자들에게 참고할 만한 정보를 제공하고자 한다. Visualization of music performance has been a popular research discipline in recent years, together with the advancement in computer science and software engineering. The major benefits of music visualization include the straightforward demonstration of music features, performer’s skill, and, thus, the capability of precisely analyzing and understanding the music. Meanwhile, the application of music visualization has been expanded from the original animation production into various scenarios including music-teaching activities. Miscellaneous studies have been proposed by different researchers on music visualization and the exploration of its application. On the other hand, being one of the most important and popular music instruments, the piano performance has always been a critical topic in music-related research, while the study on visualization is not an exception. This paper aims to briefly review the research on piano performance visualization since the late 20th century and how it has facilitated the piano teaching activities. The discussion in this paper begins with the development track of music visualization technologies. Next, since most of the music visualizations are based on feature extraction and analysis, the corresponding studies conveyed towards piano performance will be introduced. The application of visualization on the piano teaching activities and its comparison with conventional music teaching will also be discussed. Moreover, considering that music visualization is still at a growing stage, the imitation of current research will also be discussed before the conclusion. The aim of this paper is to provide reference for music researchers.
