Cyclical Dynamics of the Turkish Economy and the Stock Market

        Zeynep Senyuz,Emre Yoldas,Ismail Onur Baycan 한국국제경제학회 2014 International Economic Journal Vol.28 No.3

We analyze the cyclical dynamics of the Turkish economy and the stock market as well as their interactions. We use hidden Markov models that are robust to parameter instability arising from major shifts in economic policy, which have been typically observed in the Turkish economy. These models provide estimates of turning points for the growth, business, and stock market cycles. We identify three states of growth cycles and two states of business cycles in Turkey characterized by different mean estimates. We find that the economy went through five recessions since 1987. Crises are characterized by sharp drops in economic activity and are preceded by slowdowns. These crises are typically followed by strong recoveries during which the economy grows above its long-run average rate. We show that the Turkish stock market goes through three regimes having distinct risk-return dynamics. Bear markets associated with negative returns precede every recession with an average lead time of three quarters, suggesting that the stock market may be a useful forward-looking indicator of the Turkish economy.

      • Predictive Effect of Preoperative Anemia on Long-Term Survival Outcomes with Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer

Celik, Orcun,Akand, Murat,Keskin, Mehmet Zeynel,Ekin, Rahmi Gokhan,Yoldas, Mehmet,Ilbey, Yusuf Ozlem Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4

Background: Anemia is the most common hematologic abnormality in bladder cancer (BC) patients. We evaluated the impact of preoperative anemia on oncologic outcomes in BC undergoing transurethral resection of a bladder tumor (TURBT) for the first time diagnosis. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the data collected from 639 patients who underwent TURBT between January 2006 and September 2014 in our department. Of these patients, 320 qualified for inclusion in the study. The primary efficacy endpoint was the effect of preoperative anemia status on cancer-specific and overall survival. Independent t-test and chi-square analyses were performed to assess the effects of anemia on oncologic outcomes. Survival was estimated by using the Kaplan-Meier test. Results: There were 118 (36.9%) and 202 (63.1%) patients in the anemia (Group-1) and non-anemia groups (Group-2), respectively. The median follow-up duration was 68 months. Anemia was associated with decreased overall survival (p<0.001). Comparison between cancer-specific survival of two groups did not show any statistically significant difference (p=0.17). Conclusions: Preoperative anemia status of BC patients according to World Health Organization classification is associated with decreased overall survival, but not with cancer-specific survival. We think that preoperative hemoglobin levels should be considered in patient counseling and decision-making for additional therapy.

Assessment of the functional response parameters of Coccinella septempunctata to varying densities of Acyrthosiphon pisum

        Muhammad Hamayoon Khan,Zeynep Yoldaş 한국응용곤충학회 2018 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.21 No.4

The functional response of a predator describes the rate at which it kills its prey at different prey densities and is, therefore, an important tool to determine the efficiency of a predator in regulating the population dynamics of a prey. We investigated the functional response of Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to varying densities of Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The results revealed that the linear coefficient, P 1 in the reduced logistic model was found significantly negative for the 4 th instar larvae and adult male and female of C. septempunctata (−0.002, −0.004 and − 0.002, respectively) indicating a type II functional response. The parameter estimates of adult male, female and 4 th instar larvae of C. septempunctata calculated through Holling's disc model revealed that the highest attack rate (a) (1.047 ± 0.014), shortest handling time (T h ) (0.0984 ± 0.024 h) and largest maximum capture rate (T/T h ) (243.902) was exhibited by female. Parameter estimates calculated through Rogers’s equation also showed the same sequence where maximum attack rate (a) of 0.00256 ± 0.0003 was exhibited by female followed by 4 th instar larvae (0.00251 ± 0.0005). The shortest handling time (T h ) (0.210 ± 0.003 h) and highest maximum capture rate (T/ T h ) (114.17) was also exhibited by female. Comparison of functional response curves of adult male, female and 4 th instar larvae revealed that maximum consumption of prey at all the densities offered was shown by female followed by 4 th instar larvae. The study manifested that C. septempunctata could be an efficient biocontrol agent of pea aphid, A. pisum.

Photocatalytic degradation of malachite green dye using zero valent iron doped polypyrrole

        Bircan HASPULAT TAYMAZ,Handan KAMI?,Ozge YOLDA? 대한환경공학회 2022 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.27 No.2

The zero valent iron doped polypyrrole (Ppy/Fe) was synthesized via chemical oxidative polymerization method in diethylene glycol medium for the first time in this study. The characterization of synthesized Ppy and Ppy/Fe composites was realized by using fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectrometer (DRS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), elemental dispersion X-ray analysis (EDX), four point probe electrical conductivity X-Ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and pH at point of zero charge (pHpzc) methods. These characterizations show that there is an interaction between zero valent iron (Fe0) and Ppy polymer. The photocatalytic activity of synthesized Ppy and Ppy/Fe composite were investigated by degradation of malachite green (MG) dye under UV light irradiation. Ppy/Fe composite was achieved complete degradation within 60 min, which is 5.92 times faster than pure Ppy. The effect of irradiation time, ratio of Ppy and Fe0 in the synthesized composites, photocatalyst amount to photocatalytic efficiency of Ppy/Fe is studied. Also, the photocatalytic stability of Ppy/Fe is investigated under UV light illumination for degradation MG dye.
