Putting Women In Their Place: “Family” as Strategy in the Cold War in The Thing from Another World (1951)

        ( Yolanda Lee ) 한국영미문화학회 2015 영미문화 Vol.15 No.2

The science fiction/horror film The Thing from Another World directed by Christian Nyby/Howard Hawks was made in 1951. The basic idea is to discuss how to define the boundary of the human and the alien. However, the minor female character is more intriguing, since there is the doubleness between the woman and the alien monster in the perspective of patriarchal system. Furthermore the society of the 1950s is trying to revive people’s faith in the “cult of true womanhood,” since during the World War II when men go to the front, the society encourages women to step out of the domestic sphere and enter the job market to show their patriotism. While after the war, the society begins to emphasize the traditional family value which the woman should value the most in her life so that she can retreat from the society and give jobs back to the veterans. So in this essay, I intend to discuss that in order to balance the power relationship between the gender and maintain the leading position, the man includes/excludes the woman in terms of work, marriage and family by comparing the monster with/to the woman.

Amylase–Trypsin Inhibitors in Wheat and Other Cereals as Potential Activators of the Effects of Nonceliac Gluten Sensitivity

        Yolanda Reig-Otero,Jordi Man˜es,Lara Manyes 한국식품영양과학회 2018 Journal of medicinal food Vol.21 No.3

Nonceliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is a gluten-related gastrointestinal disorder distinct from celiac disease (CD) and gluten allergy that is not easy to diagnose due to the lack of biomarkers. It is characterized by intestinal symptoms and extraintestinal manifestations with the consumption of gluten-containing foods. In contrast to CD, NCGS patients do not present a genetic predisposition or intestinal villi atrophy. Recent studies question the proinflammatory triggering activity of α-gliadin fraction contained in wheat, since it has been demonstrated that the amylase–trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) exert a strong activating effect on the innate immune response. We aimed to analyze the role of ATIs in the activation of innate immunity and in the development of the symptoms characteristic of NCGS. A systematic literature search was made using databases such as MEDLINE, SciELO, Science Direct, and Scopus, with focus on key words such as “amylase–trypsin inhibitors,” “wheat,” “gluten,” and “celiac.” Many studies are available on the structure, inhibition mechanism, and immune system effects of ATIs, mainly focused on IgE-mediated reactions. Recently, with the increase of NCGS interest, has increased the literature on the capacity of ATIs contained in wheat to activate the innate immune system. Literature published to date questions the relationship between activation of the innate immune system and gluten in NCGS. ATIs may have acted as interfering contaminant of gluten and appear as potential activator of innate immunity in NCGS patients. In view of their potential impact, more interventional studies are needed to demonstrate the proinflammatory effect of ATIs.

Comparative Performance of the Reverse Algorithm Using Architect Syphilis TP Versus the Traditional Algorithm Using Rapid Plasma Reagin in Florida’s Public Health Testing Population

        Yolanda R. Totten,Bonnie M. Hardy,Berry Bennett,Marie-Claire Rowlinson,,Susanne Crowe, 대한진단검사의학회 2019 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.39 No.4

In Florida, where syphilis is a reportable disease, the number of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis cases has increased from 3,266 in 2008–2010 to 5,340 in 2013–2015, a 63% increase. The objective of this study was to compare the performance and sensitivity of the syphilis reverse algorithm with the traditional algorithm for detecting P&S (infectious) syphilis cases. Clinical specimens from individuals who self-referred for syphilis testing at public health clinics were processed using the traditional algorithm (non-treponemal rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test followed by a confirmatory treponemal (EIA) test) and then further tested with the Architect Syphilis TP (ASTP) immunoassay (Abbott Diagnostics, Chicago, IL, USA) or by RPR confirmation, if needed (reverse algorithm). Of 1,079 specimens, 59 were positive for syphilis. The sensitivity of the reverse algorithm was 98.3% (58/59) and of the traditional algorithm was 72.9% (43/59). Based on clinical evidence, of the 16 traditional algorithm-negative but reverse algorithm-positive cases, 68.8% (11/16) were classified as missed P&S infections (treatment naïve) and 31.2% (5/16) were classified as missed past syphilis (latent or infections with documented linkage to care). The reverse algorithm enables the detection of additional P&S syphilis cases missed by our current traditional algorithm.

Application of Local Axial Flaps to Scalp Reconstruction

        Yolanda Zayakova,Anton Stanev,Hristo Mihailov,Nicolai Pashaliev 대한성형외과학회 2013 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.40 No.5

Background Scalp defects may be caused by various etiological factors, and they represent a significant surgical and aesthetic concern. Various surgical techniques can be applied for reconstructive work such as primary closure, skin grafting, pedicled or free flaps. In this article, the authors share their clinical experience with scalp operations using the technique of local flaps and discuss the application of this method from the perspective of not only the size of the defect, but also in relation to the anatomical area, quality of surrounding tissue, and patient’s condition. Methods During the period from December 2007 to December 2012, 13 patients with various scalp defects, aged 11 to 86 years, underwent reconstruction with local pedicle flaps. The indications were based on the patients’ condition (age, sex, quality of surrounding tissue, and comorbidities) and wound parameters. Depending on the size of the defects, they were classified into three groups as follows: large, 20 to 50 cm2; very large, 50 to 100 cm2; extremely large, 100 cm2. The location was defined as peripheral (frontal, temporal, occipital), central,or combined (more than one area). We performed reconstruction with 11 single transposition flaps and 1 bipedicle with a skin graft on the donor area, and 2 advancement flaps in 1 patient. Results In all of the patients, complete tissue coverage was achieved. The recovery was relatively quick, without hematoma, seroma, or infections. The flaps survived entirely. Conclusions Local flaps are widely used in scalp reconstruction since they provide healthy, stable, hair-bearing tissue and require a short healing time for the patients.

      • WHO BENEFITS FROM IMPORT SUBSTITUTION INDUSTRIALIZATION (ISI) OF THE PHILIPPINE MILKFISH HATCHERY-BRED FRY INDUSTRY?

        Yolanda T. Garcia,Maria Esperanza T. Garcia,Arnulfo G. Garcia 한국무역학회 2019 한국무역학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2019 No.08

This study aims to estimate the welfare gains of the Philippine milkfish industry in establishing local fry hatcheries to reduce imports from Indonesia and Taiwan. It also seeks to establish the industry stakeholders who gain from this import substitution industrialization (ISI). The economic surplus model was used to estimate the welfare gains from ISI of hatchery-bred milkfish fry in the fishery sector. Specifically, the changes in consumer and/or producer surplus per stakeholder were compared to determine who the biggest gainers are. Results of the study showed that the consumer surplus from the milkfish fry industry was larger than its producer surplus. On the other hand, the reverse was true for the grow-out industry. It is interesting to note that the consumers in the fry industry and the producer in the grow-out industry were the same set of stakeholders, i.e., the milkfish grow-out operators, who gained the most from the ISI of the hatchery-bred fry. The study also showed that the commercialization of the local milkfish hatchery technologies can bring about more benefits to the country than importing frys and fingerlings. Hence, ISI of local hatcheries for other aquaculture species can be expected to bring similar welfare gains. More importantly, the technical and financial assistance that were extended by the government’s fishery sector through the GAINEX project as pioneered by DOST-PCAARRD can serve as an effective catalysts to prospective hatchery operators in reducing the risks, especially when setting-up a new enterprise like the hatchery-bred fry for an emerging aquaculture species in the country.

Lateralization of the Dichotic Digits Test, Central Auditory Processes, and Evoked Potentials in Multiple Sclerosis

        Yolanda Peñaloza,Martha Valdivia,Adrián Poblano 대한청각학회 2020 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.24 No.1

Lateralization for central auditory processing (CAP) with dichotic digits recognition (DDR) test is believed expression of hemispheric dominance. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered an inflammatory and autoimmune alteration of central nervous system (CNS). Hearing alterations in MS and their role in CAP has not been well studied. A patient with MS and new kind of alteration in lateralization of CAP with DDR test is presented. A 53 year of age female with MS of 16 years of evolution, nine of them remained asymptomatic. She has a persistent advantage of the right ear for DDR test; but other monaural tests showed predominance of the left afferent pathway. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and long latency auditory evoked potentials (LLAEPs) showed adequate right response with deficits in organization of left response in BAEP, and N2 wave. In the contrary direction of previous publication, we disclosed advantage for DDR test, BAEP, and LLAEP in the right ear. We observed no left ear suppression; with predominance of correct left percentages in monaural psychoacoustics tests. We must keep on searching to find pathophysiological meaning of predominant of right or left auditory laterality as a CAP disorder in patients with MS.

      • Market Efficiency and Volatility Spillover in Bitcoin and Ethereum Prices: Comparisons during the Pre-COVID-19 Period and COVID-19 Pandemic

        Yolanda T. Garcia,Joshua V. Tolentino 한국무역연구원 2021 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.17 No.2

Purpose – This study attempts to establish if the markets for the two most popular cryptocurrencies in the world, Bitcoin and Ethereum, follow weak-form market efficiency across various landmarks in time. Design/Methodology/Approach – Traditional testing for establishing weak-form market efficiency rests on whether the price series exhibits a random walk process, which implies that future prices cannot be predicted. However, not all random walk series automatically imply weak-form market efficiency, since some asset price behaviors may exhibit non-constant variance. In such cases, the GARCH model can be used to test for the presence of market efficiency. Since structural breaks in the prices of both cryptocurrencies are common, tests for market efficiency were carried out using sub-temporal price windows. In both price series, the last time window coincided with the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic period. Findings – Results of the GARCH analyses showed that the volatility and persistence parameters (α and β, respectively) in the Bitcoin and Ethereum models were all statistically significant, implying that prices in their sub-temporal markets were generally weak-form inefficient. The observed market inefficiency in both cryptocurrencies can be attributed to various factors like the price manipulation of crypto whales, security issues, and increased media attention, which led to inflows of information that helped big investors beat and gain from the market by successfully predicting the trend in future prices. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic period, both cryptocurrencies’ prices were observed to rise significantly, similar to the case of the 2017 Bitcoin price bubble. A cointegrating regression between Bitcoin and Ethereum prices during this period, however, showed a spurious relationship. Despite the absence of a long run relationship between these two price series, the current price bubbles in the cryptocurrency markets are speculated to be tied together. Research Implications – Players in the cryptocurrency market must always be cautious in making investment decisions regarding this type of asset since the markets are generally price inefficient and risky; any idiosyncratic decision that may be triggered by a price bubble burst in one cryptocurrency market may or may not serve as a signal that the other market will do the same. Since the Bitcoin and Ethereum prices were shown to exhibit volatility spillover and persistence, investors can use this information to make informed decisions as to whether to invest in these cryptocurrencies despite the huge risks that are magnified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
