This article explores the source of the modern meaning of “Bao Zhang” by studying the evolution of its meaning and how it spread among the countries in Chinese character cultural circle. The original meaning of “Bao Zhang” was “a material object that plays a protective role, like a city wall or a bastion”, while its modern meaning is “an abstract thing that plays a protective role”. So the meaning of “Bao Zhang” evolved from “a concrete one” into “an abstract one”. The evolution happened because characteristics of the nouns that accompanied by “Bao Zhang” had changed from “concrete” into “abstract”. However, when “Bao Zhang” was used as a verb, its meaning didn’t change throughout the years. But its object changed from “a real person or thing” into “an abstract thing”. The evolution of the meaning of “Bao Zhang” is a process of meaning expansion. During this process, what appear was just an additional meaning of “Bao Zhang”, not a new word, which shows a clear difference from the formation of a typical “original loan word”.
Conceptual Design Optimization of Tensairity Girder Using Variable Complexity Modeling Method

Tensairity girder is a light weight inflatable fabric structural concept which can be used in road emergency transportation. It uses low pressure air to stabilize compression elements against buckling. With the purpose of obtaining the comprehensive target of minimum deflection and weight under ultimate load, the cross-section and the inner pressure of tensairity girder was optimized in this paper. The Variable Complexity Modeling (VCM) method was used in this paper combining the Kriging approximate method with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method, which was implemented by ABAQUS. In the Kriging method, the sample points of the surrogate model were outlined by Design of Experiment (DOE) technique based on Optimal Latin Hypercube. The optimization framework was constructed in iSIGHT with a global optimization method, Multi-Island Genetic Algorithm (MIGA), followed by a local optimization method, Sequential Quadratic Program (SQP). The result of the optimization gives a prominent conceptual design of the tensairity girder, which approves the solution architecture of VCM is feasible and efficient. Furthermore, a useful trend of sensitivity between optimization variables and responses was performed to guide future design. It was proved that the inner pressure is the key parameter to balance the maximum Von Mises stress and deflection on tensairity girder, and the parameters of cross section impact the mass of tensairity girder obviously.

In this paper, the principles of stack effect countermeasures in high-rise buildings were described and its effects were analyzed by simulation method. Stack effect is more common in these days because of the increase of high-rise buildings in urban area in Korea. A lot of countermeasures for stack effect are suggested but the stack effect is still reported. This is because of the incorrect understanding of the meaning of stack effect countermeasures. This paper will help to decide the countermeasures of stack effect.
근대계몽기 국한문체 번역문의 ‘한글토’와 한문의 ‘之’

국한문체 번역문의 한글토는 번역자에 의해 한문의 구절, 단어 등 성분들 뒤에 추가된 것과 한문 원문의 ‘之’와 같은 문법 요소로부터 번역된 것으로 나눌 수 있다. 번역자가 한문 문법 요소를 어떻게 번역하느냐에 따라 다양한 국한문체 유형들이 형성된다. 고한문의 ‘之’는 한국어의 지시대명사, 관형격 조사 ‘의’, 관형사형 어미 ‘-ㄴ, -는’, 주격 조사 ‘이/가’ 등에 해당된다. 한국어 어순에 가까운 번역문에서는 ‘之’가 더 이상 번역문에 나타나지 않는다. 이것은 한국어 어순을 이루는 과정에서 ‘之’가 문장 성분들의 관계를 나타내주는 역할을 하거나 번역 과정에서 생략되는 경우가 대부분이기 때문이다. 한국어 어순을 이루지 못하고, ‘한문 문장체’, ‘한문 구절체’, ‘한문 단어체’ 등 다양한 글쓰기 형태가 혼재되어 있어 일관된 번역 양상을 보이지 않는 번역문에서는 ‘之’에 대한 번역에 있어서도 혼란상을 보인다. 이러한 특징을 보이는 번역문들에는 ‘之’를 번역문에 그대로 남겨두는 경우가 있는가 하면 그것을 기계적으로 ‘의’로 번역하는 경우, ‘之’의 역할에 따라 관형격 조사나 관형사형 어미, 주격 조사 등으로 정확하게 번역하는 경우도 있다. “Hangle-to” in translated Korean-Chinese writings can be divided into two types according to different translators’ works. One is what is added to a Chinese phrase or word, and the other is what is translated from grammatical elements as “之” in Chinese writings. The methods which are used to translate Chinese grammar elements are different, thus the forms of Korean-Chinese writings are also varied. “之” from ancient Chinese writings can take many roles in Korean ones, such as demonstrative pronoun, article auxiliary “-e”, suffix of article “-n, -neun”, subject auxiliary “-i/-ka”, and so on. “之” won’t be seen in a translated Korean-Chinese writing when its grammatical order of the sentences is closed to that in Korean sentences. That is because in Korean writings, “之” has usually been omitted or substituted by other grammatical relations which are performed by different parts of the sentences. However, the translated forms of “之” will appear to be varied and confused when the sentences in Korean-Chinese writings are not in a Korean grammatical order and mixed with different types of Chinese sentences, phrases and words. In such sentences, “之” will be used in its own Chinese form, or just be technically translated into “-e”, or be accurately translated into article auxiliary, suffix of article, subject auxiliary, and so on.

Role of HCl in Atomic Layer Deposition of TiO2 Thin Films from Titanium Tetrachloride and Water

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of TiO2 thin film from TiCl4 and H2O has been intensively studied since the invention of ALD method to grow thin films via chemical adsorptions of two precursors. However the role of HCl which is a gaseous byproduct in ALD chemistry for TiO2 growth is still intriguing in terms of the growth mechanism. In order to investigate the role of HCl in TiO2 ALD, HCl pulse and its purging steps are inserted in a typical sequence of TiCl4 pulse-purge-H2O pulse-purge. When they are inserted after the first-half reaction (chemisorption of TiCl4), the grown thickness of TiO2 becomes thinner or thicker at lower or higher growth temperatures than 300 oC, respectively. However the insertion after the second-half reaction (chemisorption of H2O) results in severely reduced thicknesses in all growth temperatures. By using the result, we explain the growth mechanism and the role of HCl in TiO2 ALD.
High Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in fat-1 Mice Reduce Inflammatory Pain

Omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as α-linolenic and linoleic acids, are essential fatty acids in mammals, because they cannot be synthesized de novo. However, fat-1 transgenic mice can synthesize omega-3 PUFAs from omega-6 PUFAs without dietary supplementation of omega-3, leading to abundant omega-3 PUFA accumulation in various tissues. In this study, we used fat-1 transgenic mice to investigate the role of omega-3 PUFAs in response to inflammatory pain. A high omega-3 PUFA tissue content attenuated formalin-induced pain sensitivity, microglial activation, inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, and the phosphorylation of NR2B, a subunit of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Our findings suggest that elevated omega-3 PUFA levels inhibit NMDA receptor activity in the spinal dorsal horn and modulate inflammatory pain transmission by regulating signal transmission at the spinal dorsal horn, leading to the attenuation of chemically induced inflammatory pain.
