        Collection and evaluation of thirty‑seven pomegranate germplasm resources

        Pomegranates (Punica granatum L.) are gaining popularity among consumers because of their high antioxidant activity and multiple medical benefits. China is rich in pomegranate genetic resources, but how to use them effectively is a problem worthy of deep consideration. In this article, thirty-seven pomegranate varieties from seven provinces in China were collected and analyzed for twelve phenotypic traits and twelve biochemical indicators (seeds and juices). The fruit and aril fresh weight ranged between 210.5 and 576.5 g and 121.0 to 327.5 g, respectively, and the edible rate (42.58–64.80%), seed weight (1.80–3.41 g), seed number (249.1–838.9), fruit height (10.51–15.48 mm), fruit diameter (11.46–17.50 mm), skin thickness (2.14–6.98 mm), and shape index (0.82–0.96) varied among the different genotypes. The pomegranate juice total phenolic content ranged from 40.91 to 132.47 μg/mL, and the total flavonoid content (14.08–137.72 μg/mL), vitamin C content (12.80–66.63 μg/mL), pH (3.10–4.34), total soluble solids (13.13– 17.50°Brix), and titratable acidity (0.26–2.71%) also varied; the pomegranate seed total phenolic content ranged from 0.62 to 1.78 mg/g, and the total flavonoid content (0.39–0.99 mg/g), vitamin C content (7.55–13.90 mg/g), DPPH radical scavenging capacity (85.98–98.24%), and ABTS scavenging ability (28.72–51%) were also measured. The coefficients of variation of the studied traits ranged from 5.62 to 54.02%, and the phenotypic traits’ Shannon–Weaver diversity indexes ranged from 0.67 to 1.53. Cluster analysis divided the 37 varieties into three categories, providing a reference for improved variety breeding. In addition, genotypic and environmental effects mainly affected the pomegranate flavor and antioxidant activity, respectively.

        On-line Measuring Method of Effective Bulk Modulus in Hydraulic System Based on Frequency Analysis

        Based on the gas-liquid phase flow theory, an indirect method is proposed to on-line measure the effective bulk modulus by constructing the mathematical model which reveals the relationships of the effective bulk modulus, bubble volume fraction, pressure and natural frequency. The natural frequency of hydraulic fluid is a key parameter for measuring effective bulk modulus utilizing the model, so it is online measured by the proposed pseudo-excitation method. The frequency response function is obtained by solving the amplitude spectrum functions of pseudo-excitation signal and the response signal, and the natural frequency is obtained. The numerical simulation and experiment are carried out, and we can deduce from the analysis of simulation and experimental results that the effective bulk modulus in hydraulic system can be easily online measured by the proposed indirect method.

        Collaborative Optimization to Enable Economical and Grid Friendly Energy Interactions for Residential Microgrid Clusters

        As the number of microgrids will surge in the future power system, coordinated operation of the microgrid clusters will be essential to promote renewable energy utilization and guarantee economy of the system. An energy scheduling solution based on collaborative optimization is proposed for the multi-microgrid system with high renewable penetrations. The whole energy scheduling mechanism is built as a hierarchical scheme, in which an operator conducts coordinated scheduling to guide the microgrids participating in energy interactions within the cluster. The collaborative optimization consists of three parts: the Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III (NSGA-III) which is used to perform a global search to obtain a preliminary non-dominated solution set; the adaptive K-means clustering performed on the system solution set to obtain representative individuals; and the local search and deep optimization carried out with the trust region algorithm to determine the optimal internal electricity price in the corresponding period. With the proposed energy scheduling mechanism based on the collaborative optimization, the energy consumption/trading behavior of every microgrid participating in the transaction can be properly guided and monitored. Simulation studies have verified its feasibility and efficiency.

        Removal of minor concentration of H2S on MDEA-modified SBA-15 for gas purification

        A promising adsorbent for H2S removal of minor concentration for gas purification was prepared by synthesizing and modifying the mesoporous molecular silica of SBA-15 with methyl-diethyl-amine (MDEA). Removal performance of minor concentration of H2S on the adsorbent was experimentally studied in a dynamic setup. The adsorbents showed good performance in removing H2S from gas steams. The loaded amines did not change the ordered structure of SBA-15, but enhanced its removing H2S. The adsorbents were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption/desorption. Effect of the R (the loading ratio) of MDEA, effect of initial H2S concentration and effect of moisture on removal performance of H2S were studied respectively. With increase of the R of MDEA, the H2S removal performance of the adsorbent was improved obviously. When R of MDEA was 0.6, the removal performance was optimum. Initial H2S concentration had a large effect on the removal performance. Both breakthrough capacity and saturation capacity increased as the initial H2S concentration increased. In the presence of moisture, the experimental results showed the improvement in the removal performance of H2S. In addition, not only was the adsorbent regenerable by purging with the purified gas, but also the removal performance was stable in removal adsorption cycles.

        Experimental Study of Steel Plate Composite Shear Wall Units under Cyclic Load

        A novel type of steel plate composite shear wall that was assembled by using a steel plate and precast cement-based concrete plate is presented in this paper. The steel plate shear wall, which differs from normal steel plate shear walls, was trilaterally constrained with an elastic restraint side. The precast concrete slab was designed to prevent steel plate buckling. Six steel plate shear wall specimens were tested by using a hydraulic servo actuator. The failure mode, shear resistance, lateral stiffness, and buckling mode were investigated through an experimental study. The results indicate that the width-thickness ratio of the steel plate affected the shear-carrying capacity and failure mode. A low width-thickness ratio of steel plate required adequate bonding to prevent boundary failure. The precast concrete slabs enhanced the lateral stiffness and improved the buckling strength or shear resistance of the steel plate. The material workable capability of steel plate was fully developed with a composite buckling-restraint by using the composite shear wall; similarly, the earthquake-resistant behavior of the structural system would likewise be enhanced further.

        Nearest-Neighbors Based Weighted Method for the BOVW Applied to Image Classification

        This paper presents a new Nearest-Neighbors based weighted representation for images and weighted K-Nearest-Neighbors (WKNN) classifier to improve the precision of image classification using the Bag of Visual Words (BOVW) based models. Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) features are firstly extracted from images. Then, the K-means++ algorithm is adopted in place of the conventional K-means algorithm to generate a more effective visual dictionary. Furthermore, the histogram of visual words becomes more expressive by utilizing the proposed weighted vector quantization (WVQ). Finally, WKNN classifier is applied to enhance the properties of the classification task between images in which similar levels of background noise are present. Average precision and absolute change degree are calculated to assess the classification performance and the stability of K-means++ algorithm, respectively. Experimental results on three diverse datasets: Caltech-101, Caltech-256 and PASCAL VOC 2011 show that the proposed WVQ method and WKNN method further improve the performance of classification.
