The broad-specificity amino acid racemase (Bsar) from Pseudomonas putida catalyzes the racemization of various amino acids, offering a flexible and feasible platform to develop a new non-antibiotic selectable marker system for plant transformation. In the present study, we demonstrated that a Bsar variant, Bsar-R174K, that is useful as a selectable marker gene in Arabidopsis and rice that were susceptible to l-lysine and D-alanine. The introduction of wild-type Bsar, Bsar-R174K or Bsar-R174A into E. coli lysine or asparagine auxotrophs was able to rescue the growth of these microorganisms in minimal media supplemented with selectable amino acid enantiomers. The transformation of Arabidopsis with Bsar or Bsar variants based on d-alanine selection revealed that Bsar-R174K had the greatest efficiency (2.40%), superior to kanamycin selectionbased transformation (1.10%). Whereas, l-lysine-based selection exhibited lower efficiency for Bsar-R174K (0.17%). The progenies of selected Bsar-R174K transgenic Arabidopsis revealed normal growth properties. In addition, Bsar-R174K transgenic rice was obtained on l-lysine medium with an efficiency of 0.9%, and the progenies of the transgenic rice revealed morphologically normal phenotypes comparable with their wild-type counterparts. This study presents the first report of broad range amino acid racemase Bsar-R174K as a non-antibiotic selectable marker system applied in transgenic plants.

In this study, the coating process is employed on metal wire to help improve the friction resistant property ofcarbon fibers, thereby provides more application feasibility. The yarn coating technique for reinforcement and woven fabricprocess are used to produce carbon/stainless steel/polyester/polypropylene/acrylic (CSPPA) woven fabrics that arecharacterized with softness and a light weight. The constituent coated yarns exhibit good conductivity after being coated witha PP layer, and likewise strengthen the woven fabrics in terms of mechanical behavior of tensile strength, elongation, bendingtorsion, creep resistance, and wear-resistant properties. The test results indicate that in the woven process, samples retaingood morphology. Due to PP sheath, the tensile strength of woven fabrics increases from 23 MPa to 42 MPa. Although thelamination layer numbers does not improve the EMI SE of woven fabrics, the EMI SE still reaches over 40 dB. Themanufacturing design proposed in this study provides an innovative finishing for carbon fibers without affecting the intrinsicproperties, and provides a greater range of application for carbon fibers.

Although much research has focused on exploring different pedagogies for cultivating students’ awareness and competencies, few studies have actually looked into how this can be done to develop their gender awareness by exploring the dynamics of classroom interaction. In this paper, I examine the effects of a method, referred to as ‘classic reading instruction,’ used in a gender and literature course, via a qualitative interview study. Forty-one male and female student participants from a Taiwanese university were interviewed and five themes were identified in the data. The findings revealed that most participants affirmed the effectiveness of classic reading instruction for raising their awareness about gender. They were also able to extend this to recognize the influences of family education on them and to comment on sexism in society. In addition, both male and female participants recognized the existence of male privilege, their identification with feminism and its relevance to daily life.

Lin Sheena Xin Yi,Sim Paul Ruiqi,Lai Wei Ming Clement,Lu Jacinta Xiaotong,Chew Jacob Ren Jie,Wong Raymond Chung Wen 대한구강악안면외과학회 2023 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.49 No.4
Objectives: Understanding the lingual nerve’s precise location is crucial to prevent iatrogenic injury. This systematic review seeks to determine the lingual nerve’s most probable topographical location in the posterior mandible. Materials and Methods: Two electronic databases were searched, identifying studies reporting the lingual nerve’s position in the posterior mandible. Anatomical data in the vertical and horizontal dimensions at the retromolar and molar regions were collected for meta-analyses. Results: Of the 2,700 unique records identified, 18 studies were included in this review. In the vertical plane, 8.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0%-21.7%) and 6.3% (95% CI, 1.9%-12.5%) of the lingual nerves coursed above the alveolar crest at the retromolar and third molar regions. The mean vertical distance between the nerve and the alveolar crest ranged from 12.10 to 4.32 mm at the first to third molar regions. In the horizontal plane, 19.9% (95% CI, 0.0%-62.7%) and 35.2% (95% CI, 13.0%-61.1%) of the lingual nerves were in contact with the lingual plate at the retromolar and third molar regions. Conclusion: This systematic review mapped out the anatomical location of the lingual nerve in the posterior mandible, highlighting regions that warrant additional caution during surgeries to avoid iatrogenic lingual nerve injuries.
Downregulation of Orai1 expression in the airway alleviates murine allergic rhinitis

Orai1 is the key subunit of the Ca2+-release-activated Ca2+ channel. Our previous report has demonstrated that Orai1 expression in the airway was upregulated in the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR)mouse models. To observe whether inhibition of Orai1expression in the airway could suppress symptoms in a murine model of AR and to assess the impacts of this inhibition on the responses of local and systemic immunocytes,we administered recombinant lentivirus vectors that encoded shRNA against ORAI1 (lenti-ORAI1)into the nostrils of OVA-sensitized mice before the challenges, and analyzed its effect on allergic responses,as compared with the unsensitized mice and untreated AR mice. Administration of lenti-ORAI1 into the nasal cavity successfully infected cells in the epithelial layer of the nasal mucosa, and significantly decreased the frequencies of sneezing and nasal rubbing of the mice. Protein levels of leukotriene C4, OVA-specific IgE, and IL-4 in the nasal lavage fluid and serum and eosinophil cation protein in the serum were also significantly reduced by lenti-ORAI1, as were the mRNA levels of these factors in the nasal mucosa and spleen. These data suggested that administration of lenti-ORAI1 into the nasal cavity effectively decreased Orai1 expression in the nasal mucosa, alleviated AR symptoms, and partially inhibited the hyperresponsiveness of the local and systemic immune cells including T cells, B cells, mast cells and eosinophils that are involved in the pathogenesis of AR.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fruit and vegetable consumption of children in the United States falls below recommendations. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a national free-fruit and vegetable school distribution program designed to address this problem. This permanent, legislated program provides funding to qualified elementary schools for provision of additional fruit and vegetables outside of school meals. The objective of this study was to understand children’s perceptions of FFVP after the intervention and formulate recommendations that may improve success of the intervention. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Secondary data were obtained from 5,265 4th-6th graders at 51 randomly-selected FFVP intervention schools in Indiana. Anonymous questionnaires were completed late in the 2011-2012 academic year. Multilevel logistic regressions were used to determine associations between students’ perceptions of program effects (4 close-ended items) and their preference toward the program. Content analysis was applied to a single open-ended item for program comments. RESULTS: Over 47% of students reported greater intake of fruit and vegetables due to FFVP, and over 66% reported liking the program. Student-reported program effects were positively associated with preference for the program (P < 0.01). Themes that emerged during analysis of 3,811 comments, included, students liked: the opportunity to try different kinds of fruit and vegetables, types and flavors of fruits served, and benefits of eating fruit. Fewer students liked the types of vegetables and their benefits. A small group disliked the program citing poor flavor of vegetables and quality of fruits. Important suggestions for the program include serving more dipping sauces for vegetables, cooking vegetables, and providing a greater variety of produce. CONCLUSIONS: The degree that students liked FFVP may predict the program’s effects on fruit and vegetable intake. FFVP may become more acceptable to students by incorporating their suggestions. Program planners should consider these options for achieving program goals.
Bactericidal Activity of Soymilk Fermentation Broth by In Vitro and Animal Models
Yi-Ping Chin,Ko-Chung Tsui,Mei-Chieh Chen,Cheng-Yi Wang,Chin-Yuh Yang,Yuh-Ling Lin 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.6
Soybean fermentation broth (SFB) exhibits potent antibacterial activity against different species of bacteria in in vitro assays and animal models. Four isoflavone compounds—daidzin, genistin, genistein, and daidzein—of SFB were analyzed and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. In the in vitro test, daidzin and daidzein had more potent antibacterial activity than genistin. The minimum inhibition concentration values for these bacteria of SFB ranged from 1.25%to 5%, and the minimum bactericidal concentration values of strains ranged from 2.5% to 10%, depending on the species or strain. Vancomycin-resistant Entercoccus faecalis (VRE) strains were also tested for susceptibility to SFB in two species of animal model: the Sprague–Dawley rat and the BALB/c mouse. SFB-fed Sprague–Dawley rats showed excellent elimination efficiency against VRE, close to 99% compared with the phosphate-buffered saline–fed control group. In the BALB/c mouse model, SFB antibacterial activity was 65–80% against VRE compared with the control. In conclusion, SFB contains natural antibacterial substances such as daidzin, genistin, and daidzein that inhibit bacterial growth.
