Performance evaluation on vacuum pumps using nanolubricants

This study produced alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) nanovacuum-pump lubricants (NVALs) by involving the dispersion of Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles in a vacuum-pump lubricant (VAL) with oleic as a dispersant. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the suspension performance, thermal conductivity, viscosity, specific heat, tribological performance and vacuum-pump performance of the NVALs. The experimental results obtained from the vacuum-pump performance tests show that the NVALs with Al 2 O 3 concentration of 0.2 wt.% and oleic concentration of 0.025 wt.% yielded the lowest electricity consumption, conserving 2.39% of electricity compared with the VAL. No marked difference was observed between the temperatures of the vacuum pump using VAL and NVAL. Furthermore, evacuation (i.e., the minimal pressure of -99.5 kPa) was reached faster by the vacuum pump with the NVALs, and the evacuation time could be reduced by 4.91% under optimal conditions. In addition, the vacuum pump with the NVALs exhibited superior overall effectiveness under relatively lower ambient temperatures.
Contribution of a DNA Nick to DNA Bendability Depending on the Bending Force

A DNA nick plays a pivotal role in the bending and release of mechanical stress for double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). However, it remains unclear how a DNA nick modulates the bendability of dsDNA. Here, we report that a single nick in 30 base-pair dsDNA decreases the bending stiffness of dsDNA by 20%?30% and that the bendability of dsDNA depends on the applied bending force. To achieve this, we used D-shaped DNA nanostructures and single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer for measurement of the bending angle of dsDNA. We found that a nick in dsDNA under a bending force increases the bendability of dsDNA and the bending stiffness of dsDNA decreases further as the applied bending force is increased. Our results provide a new perspective for the effect of a nick on dsDNA mechanics, and the methods introduced here will be useful for investigating various biological processes involving DNA nicks.
Single-Molecule Methods for Investigating the Double-Stranded DNA Bendability

The various DNA-protein interactions associated with the expression of genetic information involve double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) bending. Due to the importance of the formation of the dsDNA bending structure, dsDNA bending properties have long been investigated in the biophysics field. Conventionally, DNA bendability is characterized by innate averaging data from bulk experiments. The advent of single-molecule methods, such as atomic force microscopy, optical and magnetic tweezers, tethered particle motion, and single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer measurement, has provided valuable tools to investigate not only the static structures but also the dynamic properties of bent dsDNA. Here, we reviewed the single-molecule methods that have been used for investigating dsDNA bendability and new findings related to dsDNA bending. Single-molecule approaches are promising tools for revealing the unknown properties of dsDNA related to its bending, particularly in cells.

When implementing the butt welding, an end-tab is widely used to prevent the defects at the front and back of the welding joint. After welding, the end-tab is removed and the end planes are trimmed by grinding. In oredr to design an efficient end-tab, the structure and material of the end-tab should be studied. The thermal conductivity of the material for the end-tab must be high, so that the remaining heat in the weld zone right after welding is released well to the air through the end-tab. In this study, three types of end-tabs have been investigated to find the effective end-tab. The results show that the end-tab with fin is most desirable one to improve heat transfer.

There is a long history for Chinese emigration to Korea, since they have settled down in Korea for 100 years, but they weren’t assimilated by Korean society and still kept their own identity. When Chinese Korean built their new relationship in the residing country, they also formed a multi-identity including keeping their connection with the mother country. This paper from Diaspora perspective tries to analyze the multi-identity of Chinese Korean based on the investigation on their legal position, Korea and its policy to Chinese Koreans and the status of Chinese Korean social community.

In this paper, we modify the L-L model (Li et al. 2003) and extend the application of this model to concrete confined by both steel reinforcement and CFRP. Thirty-six concrete cylinders with a dimension of ${\varphi}30{\times}60$ cm were tested to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. The experimental test results show that different types of steel reinforcement have a great effect on the compressive strength of concrete cylinders confined by steel reinforcement, but the different types of steel reinforcement have very little effect on concrete cylinders confined by both steel reinforcement and CFRP. Compared with the stress-strain curves of confined concrete cylinders, we can conclude that the proposed model can provide more effective prediction than others models.
