        Taiwanese Position in the South China Sea Dispute: Before and After the Permanent Court of Arbitration Award

        This note aims to explore the Taiwanese position before and after the Permanent Court of Arbitration Award regarding the South China Sea dispute. The findings suggest that the new Taiwanese Authority, led by Tsai Ing-Wen, has taken a slightly different approach toward the South China Sea, compared to Ma Ying-Jeou’s administration. The new Taiwanese Authority makes no comment on the eleven-dash line claim, which, in turn, implies that its approach is closer to that of the American orientation. It is suggested that the South China Sea Peace Initiative, proposed by Ma Ying-Jeou’s administration, should be followed by Tsai’s administration. In addition, the recognition of the 1992 Consensus by Tsai’s administration will encourage mainland China to consider Taiwan as one of the key players in future South China Sea negotiations.

      • Current Ripple Reduction Technique of DC/DC Converter

        This paper presents a novel method to reduce the current ripple caused by the variation of inductor for a DC/DC converter. The presented method is to increase the switching frequency to keep constant current ripple when the inductance changes. Therefore, no extra component is required. The problem will be described first and the related method is presented. An experimental DC/DC converter is implemented which is with input voltage of 12 V, output voltage of 1.5 V, output current of 10 A, and switching frequency of 200-250 ㎑. Finally, experimental results derived from the designed digital-controlled DC/DC converter are included for confirmation.

        Effect of Intra-layer Vs Fluctuation on Linear Seismic Site Response

        Soil properties vary in space even within a soil layer. Nevertheless, site response analyses are typically conducted using a best-characterized shear wave velocity (Vs) profile without considering its fluctuation. In this study, the random field theory is adopted to model heterogeneous Vs profiles for a range of coefficient of variations (COVs) and correlation lengths (CLs). Linear 1D site responses are analyzed with the randomized profiles to quantify the influence of spatial Vs variation on the propagated ground motions. Results reveal that a higher COV of randomized Vs profiles leads to a lower mean ground response compared with a homogeneous Vs profile. The variation of CL does not significantly affect the surface response and peak ground acceleration profile, but is shown to influence the degree of fluctuation of the maximum shear strain profiles. For idealized profiles, the effect of heterogeneous Vs on ground response can be approximately predicted by using reduced Vs and enlarged small strain damping that are dependent on COV.

        Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling of piroxicam with regard to CYP2C9 genetic polymorphism

        Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatorydrug used to alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis andrheumatoid arthritis. CYP2C9 genetic polymorphism significantly infl uences the pharmacokinetics of piroxicam. The objective of this study was to develop and validate thepiroxicam physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK)model related to CYP2C9 genetic polymorphism. PK-Sim ®version 10.0 was used for the PBPK modeling. The PBPKmodel was evaluated by predicted and observed plasma concentration–time profi les, fold errors of predicted to observedpharmacokinetic parameters, and a goodness-of-fi t plot. Theturnover number (k cat ) of CYP2C9 was adjusted to capturethe pharmacokinetics of piroxicam in diff erent CYP2C9genotypes. The population PBPK model overall accuratelydescribed and predicted the plasma concentration–timeprofi les in diff erent CYP2C9 genotypes. In our simulations,predicted AUC inf in CYP2C9*1/*2 , CYP2C9*1/*3 , andCYP2C9*3/*3 genotypes were 1.83-, 2.07-, and 6.43-foldhigher than CYP2C9*1/*1 genotype, respectively. All fold error values for AUC, C max , and t 1/2 were included in theacceptance criterion with the ranges of 0.57–1.59, 0.63–1.39, and 0.65–1.51, respectively. The range of fold errorvalues for predicted versus observed plasma concentrationswas 0.11–3.13. 93.9% of fold error values were within thetwo-fold range. Average fold error, absolute average folderror, and root mean square error were 0.93, 1.27, and 0.72,respectively. Our model accurately captured the pharmacokineticalterations of piroxicam according to CYP2C9 geneticpolymorphism.

      • Does Flipped Classroom X Math Concept Learning = Improved Learning Outcomes? A Case Study in Taiwan

        The present study examined the effectiveness of the flipped classroom learning environment on learner`s learning achievement and motivation. The learning achievement and motivation were measured by Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) and Course Interest Survey (CIS) respectively. A pretest posttest quasiexperimental design was employed for this study. A total of 82 high-school students participated in this study and divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group (n=41) was taught trigonometry using the flipped classroom method while the control group (n=41) was taught utilizing traditional teaching methods. The researchers employed independent sample t-test, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to analyze the data obtained. Findings indicated a significant difference in the learning achievement and motivation between the two groups. Further analysis showed a significant difference in the performance of low achievers in the experimental and control groups.

        Nuclear Weapons and International Law

        본 논문은 핵무기의 위협이나 사용과 관련된 국제 조약들을 검토하고 있다. 이러한 국제 조약들에는, 1968년 핵 비확산 조약과 1996년 포괄적 핵실험 방지 조약등이 포함된다. 결론지을 수 있는 것은, 불이행에 대해 명시적인 집행 기제와 벌칙이 없을 경우, 전술한 국제 조약들의 효과는 여전히 불투명하다는 것이다. 본 논문이 또한 핵무기의 위협이나 사용의 적법성에 관한 국제사법재판소의 권고적 의견을 재검토함으로써, 논평하고 있는 것은, 자위라는 극단적인 상황에서 핵무기의 사용의 적법성에 대한 명확한 설명이 필요하다는 것이다. 핵 비확산 노력과 관련된 현행 국가 관례로부터 도출된 사례들이 역시 제시되고 있는데, 중국, 북한, 한국, 이란 등에 특별한 주의가 경주되고 있다. 본 논문이 시사하고 있는 것은, 개발도상국가들의 리더로서 중국이 핵 비확산에 대한 자신의 노력을 확대해야 하고, 핵무기를 감축하거나 금지하도록 북한과 이란 그리고 기타 다른 핵무기 국가들과 의사소통을 형성해야 한다는 것이다. This paper examines international treaties in relation to the threat or use of nuclear weapons including the 1968 Nuclear Non?Proliferation Treaty and the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. It can be concluded that the effect of the aforesaid international treaties is still in doubt without explicit enforcement mechanisms and penalty for non?compliance. This paper also reviews the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the legality of the threat or use of nuclear weapons and comments that a clear explanation on the legality of use of nuclear weapons in ‘extreme circumstances of self?defence’ is required. Examples from current state practice in relation to nuclear non?proliferation efforts are also provided, with special attention to China, North Korea and Iran. This paper suggests that China as a leader of developing countries should extend its efforts on nuclear non?proliferation and conduct communication between North Korea and Iran and other nuclear weapons states to reduce or prohibit nucear weapons.

      • THE EFFECT OF RESTAURANT INNOVATIVENESS ON CUSTOMER ADVOCACY

        This study supplements the literature by determining how restaurant innovativeness is linked to customer advocacy as well as considering self-image congruity as mediator of this relationship. A questionnaire survey of 385 restaurant customers was conducted in Taiwan. The results indicated that restaurant innovativeness is positively related to customers’ self-image congruity and customer advocacy. Customers’ self-image congruity is positively associated with customer advocacy. In addition, self-image congruity mediates the relationship between restaurant innovativeness and customer advocacy. The research contributes to literature by extend the relationships between restaurant innovativeness, self-image congruity, and customer advocacy. Restaurant managers should adopt approaches (e.g. innovativeness-related activities) for enhancing self-image congruity in customers.
