Increased Serum Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor, Nerve Growth Factor, Glial-derived Neurotrophic Factor and Galanin Levels in Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and the Effect of 10 Weeks Methylphenidate Treatment

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the levels of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and galanin in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: The study included 58 cases with ADHD and 60 healthy controls. Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime version (K-SADS-PL) together with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-5) criteria were used for diagnostic evaluation. Sociodemographic data form and Conners’ Parent/Teacher Rating Scale-Revised:Long Form were applied to all cases. The serum levels of BDNF, NGF, GDNF, and galanin were evaluated in all subjects. Afterwards, methylphenidate was started in the ADHD group. ADHD cases were reevaluated in terms of the serum levels of BDNF, NGF, GDNF, galanin at the 10th week of treatment. Results: Before the treatment, the levels of BDNF, NGF, GDNF, galanin were significantly higher in the ADHD group compared to the control group. The levels of BDNF, NGF, GDNF, galanin were found to be significantly lower after treatment in ADHD group compared to pre-treatment. No correlation was between scale scores and the serum levels of BDNF, NGF, GDNF, galanin. Conclusion: The levels of neurotrophic factors and galanin were thought to be parameters worth evaluating in ADHD. Further studies on the subject with longer-term treatments and larger sample groups are required.

Mega cisterna magna in bipolar mood disorder: a case report

Mega cisterna magna (MCM), one of the members of the Dandy-Walker complex, is a developmental malformation of the posterior fossa that is larger than 10 mm but morphologically does not affect the vermis and cerebellar hemispheres. Reports of psychiatric disorders associated with this anomaly are rare. We present the case of a patient with MCM who presented with a psychotic manic attack and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A 28-year-old female, single housewife, university graduate, presented with irritability, decreased sleep and appetite, distraction, and agitation. The patient also had a delusion of reference. In the clinical follow-up, an increase in energy and an increase in the amount of speech were observed. Her neurological examination was normal, and cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed an MCM. The relationship and clinical significance of MCM with psychosis and mood disorders have not yet been fully elucidated. It is not known whether this association is accidental or based on etiological commonality. The purpose of this case report is to review the relationship between the cerebellum and psychiatric symptoms and to contribute to the literature.

A Report of 13 Cases of Merkel Cell Carcinoma: Single-Center Experience and Review of the Literature

Background: There is limited data knowledge of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) in Turkey aside from a few case reports. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics, demographic features, therapeutic parameters, and outcome of primary cutaneous MCC cases from Turkey. Methods: Digital medical records of the 13 MCC patients who were followed-up at a tertiary referral center were retrospectively analyzed. Clinic, demographic, tumor characteristics, and survival of the patients were retrieved. Results: Most of our patients were elderly. Female predominance was noticed. The most common primary site of the tumors was the lower extremities. The overall survival was 42 months, 68% at first year, 68% at third years, and 29% at fifth years. Conclusion: This is the first largest report from Turkish population with female predominance, and lower extremity tendency. (Ann Dermatol 31(3) 272∼278, 2019)

Depressive Temperament in Relatives of Patients with Schizophrenia Is Associated with Suicidality in Patients with Schizophrenia

Objective: Suicide is a major cause of death in patients with schizophrenia; thus, predicting and preventing suicide in patients with schizophrenia is examined in various studies. Affective temperaments which are accepted as precursors of mood disorders may be an important factor in predicting suicidality. This study investigated the relationship between affective temperaments of relatives of schizophrenia patients and suicidal thoughts and other clinical correlates of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: Patients with schizophrenia and their first degree relatives are included to the study. All of the participants were evaluated with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV axis I disorders and relatives with active psychiatric diagnosis were excluded. Positive and Negative Symptom Scale, Clinical Global Impression Scale, Turkish version of cognitive assessment interview were administered congruently to the patients. Relatives of the patients were evaluated with Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-Auto-questionnaire. Results: Depressive temperament scores of relatives of schizophrenic patients who had suicidal thoughts were higher than the scores of the relatives of the patients who did not have suicidal thoughts. Depressive temperament also predicted number of suicide attempts in regression analysis. Number of suicide attempts was also related with number of hospitalization and functionality of the patient. Conclusion: Suicidality in schizophrenia is related with relatives’ affective temperaments and patients’ own positive symptom scores. The relationship between suicidal thoughts and depressive temperament is high lightened in this study

Increased Serum Hepcidin Levels in Children and Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the serum hepcidin levels in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients that were newly diagnosed with no history of psychotropic drugs. Methods: A total of 70 ADHD patients and 69 healthy controls were enrolled in our study. During the diagnosis, the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime version were applied. The sociodemographic data form, Turgay DSM-IV-Based Child and Adolescent Behavior Disorders Screening and Rating Scale, and Conners’ Rating Scales-Revised: Long Form were used for the clinical evaluation. Serum hepcidin levels were measured and compared between the groups. Results: No significant difference between the groups in terms of age (p =0.533) and gender (p =0.397) was determined. In addition, the groups did not differ significantly for the other sociodemographic variables recorded. Serum hepcidin levels were found to be significantly higher in the patients with ADHD than healthy controls (p =0.019). Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate the total serum hepcidin levels in ADHD patients. Our study findings may suggest that high levels of hepcidin may cause iron dysregulation in ADHD patients. However, further studies are required to establish a definite conclusion.

Severe lupin bean intoxication: an anticholinergic toxidrome

Lupin beans are the yellow legume seeds of the genus Lupinus. They are traditionally eaten as a pickled snack in many countries. Bitter lupin beans have a high amount of alkaloids called lupanine. Because the alkaloid is responsible for anticholinergic toxidrome, the beans should pass a debittering process before consumption. Only few pediatric cases of lupin bean intoxication were reported. We present a 12-year-old boy who visited the emergency department for the unexpected onset of anticholinergic toxidrome.

Box-Behnken design-based biodiesel wastewater treatment using sequentialacid cracking and electrochemical peroxidation process: Focus on COD, oil-greaseand volatile fatty acids removals

The treatability of biodiesel wastewater by the electrochemical peroxidation process following acidificationpretreatment was investigated. Box-Behnken design, one of the experimental designs of response surface methodology,was applied to optimize the process parameters for chemical oxygen demand (COD), oil-grease, and volatile fatty acids(VFAs) removal from biodiesel wastewater. The process parameters, i.e., applied current, H2O2/COD ratio, and reactiontime, were optimized and the total cost of the process was determined. After the acidification process as a pretreatment,the COD, oil-grease, and VFAs removal efficiencies were 25.4%, 68.7%, and 50%, respectively. Optimum conditionsdetermined by the developed model for maximum oil-grease removal (98.2%) were applied: current 1.0 A, H2O2/CODratio 0.4, and reaction time 32.8 minutes. This devised Box-Behnken model predicted removal efficiencies of 45.5%,98.2%, and 49.5% for COD, oil-grease, and VFAs, respectively. The total cost of the process determined by the modeland obtained from the validation experiments was 2.03 €/m3 and 1.97 €/m3, respectively. The results of the study showedthat the applied process was efficient in pollutant removal from acidified biodiesel wastewater and the Box-Behnkendesign can be applied to explain the mechanism of the process and optimize the process parameters.

Pre-coagulated landfill leachate treatment by Electro-oxidation using MMO/Ti, Pt/Ti, and graphite anodes

In this study, sequential coagulation and electro-oxidation (EO) processes were applied to landfill leachate, which is highly contaminated and complex wastewater. Since the pollutant content of the leachate was too high, the coagulation process (poly aluminum chloride (PAC) as a coagulant) was applied as a pre-treatment to reduce the cost of the EO process. The Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology was used. The color number (CN) removal efficiency estimated by the model under optimum operating conditions was 80.1%, while it was 77.6% in the experimental studies performed under optimum conditions to verify the model conformity. Multi-metal oxide doped Ti (MMO/Ti), Pt doped Ti (Pt/Ti), and graphite were used as anode and stainless steel was used as cathode in the EO process. In the EO process in which Pt/Ti anode was used, chemical oxygen demand (COD), UV<SUB>254</SUB>, and CN removal efficiencies were 52.8, 68.1, and 85.6%, respectively under the conditions of applied current 1.25 A and the pH 5. The CN value decreased to 4.2 after the coagulation process and it was 0.6 at the effluent of the EO process.

Sustainable Growth of Turkish Tourism Sector and Alternative Methods in Finance

According to the World Tourism Organization-Tourism Highlights 2011 survey in 2010 World’s top destinations, Turkey has the seventh most tourists, with 27 million visitors and the tenth highest revenue from tourism, earning $20,8 billion. In first quarter of 2011 the negative effects of economic and political developments in Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East caused early booking cancellations and destination changes in favor of Turkey. If we compare the first quarter of 2011 with the previous year, there was an increase of international tourists to Turkey of 17%, and an increase in tourism revenues of 28.5% in dollars. Turning this positive trend into a sustainable growth in tourism sector and achieving the goal of 63 million tourists and 86 billion dollars in year 2023 as projected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism depends on improving alternative methods in sectoral finance and support of medium and long-term investments by the government. The subject of this study is to propose alternative methods for tourism finance in Turkey. The first part of this study discusses the current loan structure of tourism sector; the second part discusses existing tax and incentive schemes; the third part analyzes of the alternative finance methods which are used around in the world; and the last part discusses solution proposals for sustainable growth.
