      • The Figure of Baozhi (418-524): A Model for the Buddhist Historiography of the Koryŏ Dynasty?

        The present paper represents the first step of an appraisal of the influence, in the Korean historiographic tradition, of the archetypal model of Baozhi as a textual and religious paradigm. It shows that, even if the references in Korean sources to Baozhi, the Liang Dhyāna master, are scant ("literary motif" in literati works, Biographies of the monks Wŏnhyo, Yangji and Podŏk in the Samguk yusa, legends of the founding of the Haein and Kyŏnam Temples as transmitted by the Naong School), the fact remains that he had an indelible influence on the pre-modern Buddhist historiography of Korea. In the written culture of Koryŏ and Chosŏn, the paradigmatic figure of Baozhi generally functioned in the same way as in China. However, it would seem that each period selectively adopted one or another of the archetypal functions that characterized the monk, influenced by the construction Baozhi's myth in China, but also depending upon the political and social position of Buddhism on the Korean peninsula. During the Koryŏ period, Baozhi's influence was the strongest as one of the models that went into the development of the myth of Tosŏn (the monk-prophet legitimizing the establishment of the dynasty and initiator of Buddhist construction).

        Currency Union in North-East Asia Countries

        본 논문은 산업 전문화에 초점을 맞추어 동아시아에서의 공동통화 문제를 다루었다. 산업전문화에 초점을 맞춘 것은 바로 이것이 향후 동아시아 지역의 무역, 경상수지, 자본이동, 환율 동학에 영향을 미칠 것이기 때문이다. 우선 동아시아 국가들과 다른 국가들의 최적 통화 지역과 관련된 선행 연구들을 정리하고 국제무역에서 중요한 역할을 하는 산업조직에 대한 선행 연구도 정리하였다. 이후 경제성장이 국제수지에 의해 제약되는 부분균형 모델을 상정하였다. 이후 이 모델에 대한 이론적 실증적 방법론을 자세히 설명하였다. 모델을 통해 분석한 결과 무역구조가 동아시아 국가들 사이에서 매우 다른 현상, 즉 전문화가 많이 진행되었다는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 이와 같이 국가 간에 전문화가 심화된 경우 공동통화를 도입하기 어렵다고 흔히 이야기된다. 하나의 해결책은 동아시아의 전체 국가들을 대상으로 하는 것이 아니라 무역 구조가 상대적으로 비슷한 한국, 중국, 일본만을 대상으로 아시아 공동통화를 도입하는 것이다. This paper investigates the common currency issues in Asia. We set most of our analysis on international specialization because it affects future international trade, current accounts evolutions, international capital mobility, and exchange rate dynamics. An analysis on the stages of the integration process is started to set up main conclusions of selected literature relating to the optimal currency area implemented, as well as Asian countries and other economies. Recent details from past studies are explored to shed more light on productive structures, because they play a major part of international trade. Our starting point is a partial model where economic growth is constrained by external accounts. Then the oretical and empirical methodologies are detailed. Our main findingis that trade specialization remains quite different between East Asian countries. A common currency union could be difficult to implement because international trade, which reflects the international specialization of countries, is still different between countries. One solution could be to create an Asian Common Currency (ACC) between China, Japan, and Korea, as their international positions seem less opposite, especially for manufactured goods.

        God in Abstentia: The Impossible Ethics of Absence in Cormack McCarthy

        코막 맥카시는 현존하는 미국 작가들 중 가장 탁월한 분 중 한 명이다. 그는 수십 편의 소설, 연극, 영화의 대본을 썼으며, 지난 30여년 동안 풍부하고 복합적이며 신화적인 세계를 구축하였다. 그렇지만 맥카시를 모르는 새로운 독자들에게 그의 소설은 다소 불편할 수 있으며, 그의 책 페이지 마다 악과 폭력이 난무하므로 특히 크리스천들은 강한 거부감을 느낄 수 있다. 따라서 어떤 학자들은 그의 작품을 ‘허무주의적’이라고 부른다. 그의 세상은 차갑고 가차 없으며 무의미하다. 맥카시의 세계에는 윤리의 가능성이 없어 보인다. 필자는 먼저 이 논문에서 맥카시 소설의 소위 ‘허무주의적 성격’과 악의 현존에 대한 거의 형이상학적 묘사를 검토하려고 한다. 이어서 필자는 맥카시의 소설에 끈질기게 나타나는 윤리의 실재를 다루려고 한다. 사실 그의 소설에는 윤리의 부재나 불가능성보다, 윤리적인 판단과 태도가 가득하다. 그의 소설을 읽을 때 당황스러운 것은 윤리 문제가 그 부재 가운데 나타나기 때문이다. 악이 전능하게 보이는 때에 ‘남은 자의 윤리’(remnantal ethics)가 있다. 필자는 하나님의 부재가 인식되는 세상에서 악의 지속적 현존이 느껴지는 것은 하나님께서 인간을 창조하실 때 우리 속에 ‘(하나님의) 흔적’을 만들어 주셨기 때문이다. 따라서 맥케시의 등장인물들이 아무리 깊이 죄의 영향을 받았다 하더라도 ‘신성에 대한 감성(sensus divinitatis, 혹은 ‘종교의 씨앗’)이 그들의 행위를 통하여 밝히 드러난다. Cormac McCarthy is without contest one of the most significant American writers alive today. Author of over a dozen novels, plays, and screenplays, he has, over a span of more than thirty years, built rich, complex, and mythological worlds. For the new reader, opening a McCarthy novel might be somewhat uncomfortable, especially for the Christian reader. Evil and violence seem to transpire through every page. This has led some scholars to characterize his work as nihilistic. The world is cold, unforgiving, and meaningless. There would be no possibility for ethics in McCarthy’s worlds. First, this article looks at the supposed nihilistic nature of McCarthy’s novels and the almost metaphysical description of the presence of evil. Second, this article looks at the persistent presence of ethics in McCarthy’s novels. Far from being absent or impossible, his novels are full of ethical judgments and attitudes. The puzzlement of reading McCarthy comes from the fact that, in his worlds, ethics is best seen through its absence. Remnantal ethics in McCarthy is seen when evil seems all-powerful. This article concludes that this persistent presence of evil, in the perceived absence of God, is the result of the imprint God made in man at creation. Thus, no matter how deeply McCarthy’s characters are affected by sin, there will always be something of the sensus divinitatis transpiring through their actions.

        韓國學專攻 프랑스 大學生을 위한 漢字敎育 方法論

        This presentation consists in describing the outlines of the course of education on Korean-Chinese Characters («Exercices structuraux en sinographie) for beginners at the Korean Studies Center (included inside the East Asian Studies Department) of the Paris 7 University given to the 2nd year French students. Because of the time limits inherent in the academic year, the suggested method is centered on ‘self-training’. The purpose of this course is not limited in learning Korean-Chinese characters(300 characters corresponding to the level 6 of the ‘National Test of knowledge about Korean-Chinese Characters’ Hanja nùngnyòk kòmjòng sihòm), but it aims to improve the capacity of students to analyse and to use the Korean- Chinese lexicon. At the end of such training, students are to be introduced to the basic rules and notions of Classical Chinese. In the last part of the communication I tried to bring out some specific points that teacher of European student should emphasizecomparing to Korean methods. I would like to use this opportunity to receive suggestions and advices by scholars specialized in Korean Language Education of different countries beginning by South-Korean experts in order to publish in French educational materials, useful for Korean-Chinese Education.

        An attempt to construct and characterize the history of Korean Buddhist studies in France (1868–2022)

        This article is the first to address the history of Korean Buddhist studies in France, written on the occasion of the first international conference of the program "Glocality of Korea from the Buddhist Perspective" of the Center for the Expansion of Academics on Korea of Dongguk University held in July 2022 in Paris. Because of the scope of the subject matter, it is limited to defining a few chrono-thematic milestones in order to understand the actors, the institutions involved, the national and international context, as well as the main works and themes treated. Thus, a century and a half of history of this field of study is divided into four major periods, highlighting the conjunction of several factors determining the development of Korean Buddhist studies in France, such as the history of relations between Korea and France, the development of Korean studies in France, the permanent presence of representatives of the Jogye Order, the number of theses defended in France on Korean Buddhism, and the career of specialists after their PhD. From this point of view, several recent events constitute a favorable context for the development of research in the humanities and social sciences on Korean Buddhism in France: 1) the creation in 2017 of the Interdisciplinary Center for Buddhist Studies (CEIB) operating as a network within the framework of a group of institutions (EPHE, Collège de France, INALCO); 2) the opening since 2020 of a position in "Korean Buddhism" in the Religious Sciences Section at the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) giving rise to the offer of an annual seminar; 3) a project to create a research team of French-speaking specialists working in France on Korean Buddhism, to be housed at the Institut d'Études Coréennes (IEC) du Collège de France in 2023.

        6D Interpretation of 3D Gravity

        <P>We show that 3D gravity, in its pure connection formulation, admits a natural 6D interpretation. The 3D field equations for the connection are equivalent to 6D Hitchin equations for the Chern–Simons 3-form in the total space of the principal bundle over the 3-dimensional base. Turning this construction around one gets an explanation of why the pure connection formulation of 3D gravity exists. More generally, we interpret 3D gravity as the dimensional reduction of the 6D Hitchin theory. To this end, we show that any <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\text{SU}(2)$ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0264-9381/34/4/045007/cqgaa5727ieqn001.gif'/> invariant closed 3-form in the total space of the principal <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\text{SU}(2)$ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0264-9381/34/4/045007/cqgaa5727ieqn002.gif'/> bundle can be parametrised by a connection together with a 2-form field on the base. The dimensional reduction of the 6D Hitchin theory then gives rise to 3D gravity coupled to a topological 2-form field.</P>
