        The Effect of Drug Use, Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure on Oxidative Stress Levels in Children and Adolescents with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder

        Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between clinical variables such as body mass index, blood pressure, drug use and oxidative stress level in children and adolescents with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured in the serum of 51 patients (38 male, 13 female) diagnosed with ADHD according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and 32 control subjects (12 male, 20 female). The Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia Present and Lifetime Version was applied to all participants. Results: The mean TOS, OSI, MDA values were determined to be significantly higher (p < 0.001) and the mean SOD value was lower in the ADHD group (p < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis indicated significantly lower SOD and diastolic blood pressure values and significantly higher MDA in the ADHD group compared to the control group (p < 0.01). Low SOD (sensitivity 90.2%, specificity 78.0%) and high MDA (sensitivity 86.3%, specificity 81.2%) were determined to be predictive parameters for diagnosing ADHD. In univariate analysis, the mean TOS, OSI and SOD values were higher in ADHD patients under medication, while the mean TAS was higher in patients not using medication (p < 0.01). Only TOS was significant in multivariate logistic regression analysis (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that impaired oxidative balance may play a role in the etiology of ADHD.

        Probiotics added to maternal nutrition affect ınfantile colic symptoms and fecal microbiota profile: a single-blind randomized controlled study

        Background: Infantile colic has a multifactorial etiology; although various treatments have been attempted to manage and alleviate its symptoms, a solution is lacking, adversely affecting mothers and their babies. Recent studies have suggested that dysbiosis may play a role in the pathogenesis of infantile colic and that modulating the gut microbiota, including the use of probiotics, may aid its management.Purpose: This single-blind randomized controlled study evaluated the effect of probiotics (Actiregularis, 5×106) added to the diet of mothers on infantile colic symptoms and neonatal gut microbiota content.Methods: A probiotic drink containing the Actiregularis (5× 106) strain was added to the diet of mothers in the experimental group once daily for 15 consecutive days. Stool samples were collected from each infant twice, on days 0 and 15, and fecal 16s rRNA gene sequencing and compositional-based metabolomic analyses were performed. The mothers recorded the babies’ crying frequency and severity for 15 days using a daily form created by the researchers. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT04374955).Results: Infants whose mothers were supplemented with Actiregularis for 15 days showed a decreased frequency (P= 0.00) and intensity (P<0.001) of crying as well as a significantly increased bacterial diversity in the stools (P=0.017). This variety was substantially affected by the addition of probiotic products. The greatest species diversity was observed in the group treated with probiotics, while the least diversity was observed in the control group (Shannon, P=0.0043; Simpson, P=0.017).Conclusion: Babies treated with Actiregularis added to their mother’s diet for 15 days showed decreased crying frequency and intensity and increased bacterial diversity and density.

        A novel chaotic Runge Kutta optimization algorithm for solving constrained engineering problems

        This study proposes a novel hybrid metaheuristic optimization algorithm named chaotic Runge Kutta optimization (CRUN). In this study, 10 diverse chaotic maps are being incorporated with the base Runge Kutta optimization (RUN) algorithm to improve their performance. An imperative analysis was conducted to check CRUN’s convergence proficiency, sustainability of critical constraints, and effectiveness. The proposed algorithm was tested on six well-known design engineering tasks, namely: gear train design, coupling with a bolted rim, pressure vessel design, Belleville spring, and vehicle brake-pedal optimization. The results demonstrate that CRUN is superior compared to state-of-the-art algorithms in the literature. So, in each case study, CRUN was superior to the rest of the algorithms and furnished the best-optimized parameters with the least deviation. In this study, 10 chaotic maps were enhanced with the base RUN algorithm. However, these chaotic maps improve the solution quality, prevent premature convergence, and yield the global optimized output. Accordingly, the proposed CRUN algorithm can also find superior aspects in various spectrums of managerial implications such as supply chain management, business models, fuzzy circuits, and management models.

        Physiological Responses of the Mediterranean Subtidal Alga Peyssonnelia squamaria to Elevated CO2

        The ecological consequences of ocean acidification are unclear due to varying physiological properties of macroalgae and species-specific responses. Therefore, in the present study, we used a laboratory culture experiment to analyse the eco-physiological responses of the Mediterranean subtidal red alga Peyssonnelia squamaria to CO2-induced lower pH. Our results showed an increase in the photosynthetic performance and growth rate of P. squamaria, despite the reduction in CaCO3 content in the low pH treatment. According to our results, we believe that samples exposed to elevated CO2 could be regulated own nitrogen metabolism to support increased growth rate and it may be down-regulated nitrate uptake. As a result, we hypothesize that P. squamaria may benefit from ocean acidification.

        Mesoporous TiO2-rutile supported MnxOy-Na2WO4: Preparation, characterization and catalytic performance in the oxidative coupling of methane

        The oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is one of the most important direct method to convert naturalgas into value added products. For thefirst time in literature mesoporous TiO2-rutile supported MnxOy-Na2WO4 catalyst was prepared, characterized and tested in the OCM. The activity parameters (X-CH4, SC2,Y-C2) did not change substantially during the reaction and they were mostly stable. The MnxOy-Na2WO4/mes-TiO2-rutile catalyst seems to have promising potential for the OCM. Moreover, when it iscompared with commercial TiO2-rutile and TiO2-anatase supported catalysts in literature, it can beconcluded that it is a candidate showing even better performance in the OCM.

        Caregiver Burden in Schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Comparative Study

        Objective There is no study comparing schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in terms of caregiver burden. This study aims to compare the caregiver burden among family members of the patients with schizophrenia and ASD and investigate the predictive factors.Methods A cross-sectional study with the family members living with and/or providing care to their patients was carried out. A sociodemographic form, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Self-Stigma Inventory for Families, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale were utilized. Regression analyses were conducted to determine the predictive factors for higher burden.Results Caregiver burden in ASD was significantly higher than in schizophrenia. Regression analysis showed that the predictors of high caregiver burden were the need for self-care (OR=3.6), self-destructive behaviors (OR=3.4), self-stigma (OR=1.1), depression (OR=1.1), and level of income (OR=1.0) for all family members. When the diagnosis was removed from the equation, the factors determining the high burden did not change.Conclusion This study suggests that characteristics of the illness are stronger predictors than family members’ characteristics in explaining high caregiver burden for both illnesses. Psychological, social, and economic supports should be provided for families to help alleviate their caregiving burden.

        Antibacterial Activity and Thermophysiological Comfort Enhancement by Calcium Chloride Solutions of Highly Elastane Polyamide 66 Fabrics

        A novel method to enhance antibacterial activity, thermophysiological comfort properties of highly elastanepolyamide 66 fabrics by calcium chloride pad-dry-cure method was proposed. For this purpose, three different calciumchloride solutions were prepared and applied by pad-dry-cure method to the polyamide tricot (locknit) warp knitted fabrics. The effects of this method on polyamide fabrics were investigated by antibacterial activity, thermophysiological properties,physical performance tests and characterization analyses, namely, SEM, EDX and FTIR-ATR. Results indicate that calciumchloride agent procedure significantly affected antibacterial activity and thermal comfort properties. The calcium chlorideagent procedure was found to be favorable for polyamide/elastane fabrics since it provided antibacterial activity andthermophysiological effect under mild conditions with good stiffness, handle and whiteness properties by means of calciumchloride ionic bonds onto polyamide/elastane fabrics. Most notably, calcium chloride treated fabrics were evaluated as goodantibacterial, extremely breathable and comfortable at a higher level of activity.

        Investigation of the Mechanical, Electronic and Phonon Properties of X2ScAl (X = Ir, Os, and Pt) Heusler Compounds

        In the present study, the second-order elastic constants and the electronic band structures of the X2ScAl (x = Ir, Os, and Pt) compounds crystallized in the L21 phase were calculated separately by using the ab-initio density functional theory. According to the results for the second-order elastic constants, these compounds met the Born mechanical stability criteria. Also, according to the Pugh criteria, they were found to have a ductile structure and to show anisotropic behavior. The microhardneses of the compounds were between 2 and 14 GPa, and the highest hardness was found in the Ir2ScAl (14.290 GPa) compound. In addition, the energy band structures of these compounds were calculated, and the crystals were found to have a metallic bond structure. All the computed data were compared with previously calculated results obtained with different methods. According to the findings obtained in the present study, in terms of its mechanical and electronic behaviors, Ir2ScAl was found to have better physical properties than Os2ScAl and Pt2ScAl. The phonon dispersion curves and their corresponding total and projected densities of states were investigated for the first time by using a linear-response approach in the context of density functional perturbation theory. The frequencies of the optical phonon modes of all compounds at the Γ point were 4.767, 7.504 and 9.271 THz for Ir2ScAl, 2.761, 7.985 and 9.184 THz for Os2ScAl and 2.012, 5.6952 and 8.118 THz for Pt2ScAl. The heat capacity Cv at constant volume versus temperature was calculated using a quasi-harmonic approach and the results are discussed.

        Simultaneous biosynthesis of reduced graphene oxide-Ag-Cu2O nanostructures by lichen extract for catalytic reduction of textile dyes

        Metal/metal oxide nanostructures based reduced graphene oxide (LrGO-Ag, LrGO-Cu2O, LrGO-Ag-Cu2O) nanocomposites were obtained via green method using Cetraria islandica (L.) Ach. lichen extract. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were performed to analyze the prepared nanostructures. The results indicated that the nanocomposites were synthesized effectively and Ag-Cu2O nanoparticles with the mean diameter of 27nm were well dispersed on the LrGO. The conversion of methylene blue (MB) to Leuco Methylene Blue (LMB) and 4-Nitrophenol (4- NP) to 4-Aminophenol (4-AP) was performed by biosynthesized catalysts in the presence of NaBH4. The reaction rate of LrGO-Ag-Cu2O nanocomposite during 4-NP and MB reduction was found as 0.0026 s1 and 0.0497 s1, respectively. The LrGO-Ag-Cu2O nanocomposite showed superior catalytic performance for the reduction of both textile dyes.

        Cu and Mn centered nicotinamide/nicotinic acid complexes for interlayer of Schottky photodiode

        Schottky type photodiodes have gained great interest due to their fast response to light. Various materials have been used to improve their efficiency behaviors as interlayers or electrodes. In this study, we synthesized Cu- and Mn-centered nicotinamide/nicotinic acid complexes and used them for Schottky type photodiode as interfacial layer. Thus, Al/Cu-complex/p-Si and Al/Mn-complex/p-Si metal semiconductor heterojunctions were fabricated by Al metal and p-Si semiconductor. The I–V and I-t analyses were employed to identify the fabricated devices under various light power intensities. The devices were evaluated according to various diode parameters such as series resistance, ideality factor and barrier height values obtained by I–V characteristics data from thermionic emission theory, Cheung and Norde techniques. Furthermore, various parameters of photodetection such as specific detectivity, photosensitivity and responsivity were calculated from the I-t measurements. The results reveal that heterojunctions can be employed for photodiode applications.
